Goya y Lucientes, Francisco José de, 1746 in Fuendetodos, Aragón, Spanien; †16. Complete series of eighty etchings in burnished aquatint, drypoint and engraving, published 1797-1798 or 1850 in Madrid, on laid paper. 33 x 23.3 cm; 80 plates on a single uniform stock of laid paper without watermarks; etchings with burnished aquatint, many with drypoint and/or engraving (with the scratch on plate 45, with wide margins, some paler impressions good condition); cardboard binding with the repetition of the self-portrait from plate 1 and the artist's name on the front cover. The edges yellowed overall somewhat brownish - some foxing, cover rubbed, stained and dog-eared, half cloth, in a secondary slipcase. 24,5x34,5cm Complete. Probably 1st edition otherwise early 2nd edition of the Calcographie National de Madrid from 1850. collection Grewe there as first edition. The first edition, published by the artist in an edition of about three hundred copies. With Los Caprichos, Goya made his visions of the darker side of Spanish society - and the human soul in general - accessible to a wider audience for the first time. Goya was commercially ambitious and undertook an enormous endeavour, which was prepared over several years and based on hundreds of drawings. Harris surmises that he produced 300 sets of the Caprichos. The harsh reality, however, is that perhaps only about thirty copies of this first and only liflong Edition.

Payne... and T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, 1796. *** A very good Edgeworth/Burney/Austen association copy of Burney's enormously popular novel. The list of subscribers includes Edmund Burke, Sir William Chambers, Humphry Repton, Mrs Siddons, and Maria Edgeworth herself. The annotation from Edgworth is the cutting insertion "this is worse than folly" to vol.1 p.12 margin, next to a passage of Eugenia passionately discussing Bellamy. Also included in the list of subscribers was a young and unknown Jane Austen (aged 20), as well as Warren Hastings (godfather to Austen's first cousin and sister-in-law Eliza de Feuillide). Austen was obviously familiar with Fanny Burney's works and, following the issue of Camilla in 1796, in October of that year she began writing a novel titled False Impressions which later became Pride and Prejudice, a title possibly taken from a quotation in Burney's Cecilia. She also refers to Camilla in Northanger Abbey: "'And what are you reading, Miss - ?' 'Oh! It is only a novel!' replies the young lady, while she lays down her book with affected indifference, or momentary shame. "It is only Cecilia, or Camilla, or Belinda; or, in short, only some work in which the greatest powers of the mind are displayed, in which the most thorough knowledge of human nature, the happiest delineation of its varieties, the liveliest effusions of wit and humour, are conveyed to the world in the best-chosen language."

Charpentier, 1877. *** Trois Contes is a collection of three stories: "Un coeur simple, " "La légende de Saint-Julien l'hospitalier, " and "Hérodias." Flaubert had been working on his incomplete novel Bouvard and Pécuchet (published posthumously) for over a decade when he decided to take break to write these short stories.
