The drawings of the Franciscan Bernardino Amico of Gallipoli, Father Guardian of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, working with the rules of perspective introduced a new standard of naturalism and topographical veracity for the sites in the Holy Land. Many of the buildings now lost are described as they were still preserved at the turn of the sixteenth century. Rembrandt owned a copy of this edition and borrowed from it Amico's rendering of the Temple of Jerusalem as a domed octagonal building. The first edition was printed in Rome in 1609, but this is the first with the plates engraved by Jacques Callot. Jean Philibert Peysson de Bacot was an official in the Cour des Monnaies de Lyon in 1734 and Procureur in 175., He owned a library of some 1750 titled at the time of its sale in 1779.

The chapter on "magic" includes a few short references to witches and witchcraft: notably "Vervain and dill, Hinders witches from their will", and several stories recounting methods used to hinder witchcraft. The book was first published in 1696. This second edition, revised and enlarged, includes an account of the author's life.

Both books with the ownership signature of Sir William Watson, FRS (3 April 1715 -10 May 1787), English physician and scientist and with the bookplate of the architect Percy B. Tubbs (1868-1933). The Directory of British Architects, 1834-1914, Vol. 2, p. 840 notes Tubbs' particular interest in collecting works on the topography of ancient Rome, and especially in the works of Piranesi.
