The author was a mathematician, mechanic and clockmaker from Edinburgh who worked in London and was one of the examiners of Harrison's longitude watch. This is his first book, one of 2 issues published in the same year, this without an errata leaf.

Provenance: The library of Michael Hurst; the first with the bookplate of Francis Godolphin Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds, KG, PC (1751-1799). Completed in 1759, the lighthouse was in use until 1877, the upper section was then dismantled and reassembled at Plymouth Hoe. This was Smeaton's first project and established his reputation as one of the eighteenth century's foremost engineers.

(Douglas 53), good very fine with well patinated obverse This medal was Saint Gaudens’s first official medallic commission, from the Committee on Art and Exhibition of the Washington Centennial Celebration. The medal was to be the official souvenir for the centennial of George Washington’s swearing-in as first president of the United States on April 30, 1789 at New York’s Federal Hall. Philip Martiny was Saint Gaudens’s assistant and it was he who did most of the actual modelling.
