The Green Ray was something of a departure for Verne, a love story set in Scotland, wherein a girl refuses to marry the man her uncles have chosen for her unless she sees the mysterious "green ray," which would tell her it is true love. This issue bound without the 16pp. publisher's catalogue at end.

Leslie Linder records that 2000 copies from the first printing of 8000 were issued in "green cloth, light green cloth or olive-green cloth". This mustard-yellow cloth variant is therefore unrecorded by Linder, making it perhaps the rarest of the different deluxe issues of Peter Rabbit.
