The library he founded was notable for the inclusion of a large number of scientific and medical books (ink inscription to verso of title).
Mental Health.- Bedlam.- Bowen (Thomas) An historical account of the origin, progress, and present state of Bethlem Hospital, founded by Henry the Eighth, for the cure of lunatics, and Enlarged by subsequent Benefactors, for the Reception and Maintenance of incurables, first edition, engraved frontispiece by W. Sharp after Stothard, C1 ink correction to notes, frontispiece with some foxing and offsetting on to title, disbound, 4to, no printer, 1783.⁂ Rare in commerce. It was published by order of the governors of the hospitals of Bethlem and Bridewell. Bethlem is one of the oldest psychiatric hospitals in the world, having been founded as a general hospital in 1247 in the City of London, and from the late 14th / early 15th centuries being specifically associated with the insane. It was around this time that it became more commonly referred to as 'Bedlam'. Notable patients included the artists Richard Dadd and Louis Wain, and the architect Pugin.

His wife Sarah edited and completed his work, adding three sections: 'a narrative of the continuance of the voyage to its completion'; 'a description of the English settlements on the River Gambia,' and an 'appendix, containing zoological and botanical descriptions, and translations from the Arabic.'. She also contributed the drawings for the work, which include depictions of local people, views and zoological figures.

[Helvétius (Claude Adrien)] De l'Esprit, first edition, early issue, half-title, title with large woodcut ornament of cornucopia, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, some light browning, occasional spotting, contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt with red roan label, rubbed, joints split, spine ends and some corners a little worn, 4to, Paris, Durand, 1758.⁂ Hugely controversial work which caused an outcry on its publication and was confiscated by the censors and burnt. This is an early issue (M in the date is directly above the second P but with "Dicours" in head-line of pp.67, 97, 179 & 237).
