China.- Staunton (Sir George) An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China, 3 vol. (including Atlas), second edition, engraved portrait frontispieces, both slightly offset onto titles, engraved plate and illustrations, Atlas vol. with 43 engraved plates and maps only (of 44, world map supplied in facsimile), some folding or double-page, occasional marginal damp-staining and spotting, browning, one plate with short tear to image caused by browning, abrasion mark to front free endpaper where label removed, text vol. in contemporary tree calf, rubbed, extremities worn, joints split, Atlas vol. in modern half-calf, 4to and folio, 1798.⁂ The second edition of this important account of Britain's first embassy to China, sent in 1792 and headed by Lord Macartney. Staunton was the secretary to the embassy which travelled via Madeira, Tenerife, Brazil, Java and Sumatra - the account includes a lengthy description of Rio de Janeiro, as well as one of the most important insights into Chinese life at the time.

Torture of Christian martyrs.- Gallonio (Antonio) De SS. martyrum cruciatibus ... liber quo potissimum instrumenta, & modi, quibus ijdem Christi martyres olim torquebantur, first Latin edition, the second edition overall, title with woodcut printer's device, 25 full-page woodcut illustrations of tortures, final f. with woodcut device recto, otherwise blank, water-stained, foxing, lightly browned, later limp vellum, 19th or 20th century red morocco labels to spine, [Adams G162; EDIT 16 CNCE 20277], 4to, Rome, [Aloysius Zanetti], 1594.⁂ On the various methods of torture undergone by the early Christian martyrs.
Frankish rulers.- Palazzi (Giovanni) Aquila inter lilia, sub qua Francorum cæsarum a Carolo Magno usque ad Conradum imperatorem occidentis X., first edition, half-title, title in red and black and with large engraved printer's device, engraved portrait frontispiece, 10 plates, and numerous illustrations in text, some numismatic or emblematic, some water-staining, mostly at end, occasional spotting or light staining, contemporary ornately blind-stamped vellum over wooden boards, rebacked in contemporary vellum in compartments of a different shade with later ink title and numbers, lacking clasps, corners little worn, lightly soiled, [Praz p.442], folio, Venice, Giovanni Giacomo Herz, 1671.⁂ Profusely illustrated first volume (complete in itself) of this series. Two further volumes on Saxon and Bavarian rulers were published in 1673-74.
Falconer Madan's copy.- Fables & Astronomy.- Hyginus (Gaius Julius) Mythographi Latini, 2 parts in 1, first edition, engraved portrait and astronomical illustrations, lacking engraved title, lightly foxed and browned, 19th century blind-stamped burgundy straight-grain morocco, gilt spine in compartments, rubbed, g.e., 8vo, Amsterdam, Someren, 1681.⁂ Provenance: Falconer Madan (1851-1935) Librarian of the Bodleian and bibliographer (2 small ink stamps).
Music.- Corelli (Arcangelo) Concerti Grossi, 7 vol., first edition, each engraved throughout with title and musical notation, first vol. with fine engraved frontispiece by Van der Gouwen after Trevisani, and dedication leaf dated Rome 3 December 1712, without the portrait of and epistle by Pope Clement XI, some marginal soiling and occasional light toning, contemporary sheep-backed boards, gilt-lettered morocco label to upper covers, worn, 4to, Amsterdam, Estienne Roger, [1714].⁂ Rare set of Corelli's celebrated and influential Baroque work, which greatly influenced Handel and Vivaldi inter alia.
Greece.- Wheler (George) A Journey into Greece, first edition, folding engraved map and 5 plates (one divided into 3 smaller inserts), numerous engraved illustrations, occasional soiling and spotting, a few nicks at upper margin, later sprinkled calf, gilt, lower cover detached and with most of leather missing, head of spine chewed and slightly stained, encroaching on upper cover also, [Atabey 1328; Blackmer 1786; Wing W1607], folio, Printed for William Cademan, Robert Kettlewell, and Awnsham Churchill, 1682.⁂ Internally a very good copy generally and what was until recently a fine copy overall until the consignor's dog took a fancy to it and caused considerable damage by chewing the lower cover and top of spine. Probably reparable to recreate a very good copy again. Includes a description of the honey and bees from Mount Hymettus, south east of Athens with an illustration of a Greek Beehive (pp.409-413).Provenance: British Museum with duplicate stamp dated 1818 to verso of title and final leaf.

Hiram) Journal of a Residence in the Burmhan Empire, and more particularly at the Court of Amarapoorah, first edition, half-title, hand-coloured folding aquatint frontispiece and 4 hand-coloured plates, light offsetting from plates and occasional spotting, original boards, uncut, rubbed and spotted, neatly rebacked preserving original spine with paper label, preserved in modern cloth slip-case, [Abbey, Travel 402], 8vo, 1821.⁂ The author was an East India company official sent to Rangoon as Resident in 1796.
