Second pierced, good fine, first fine and rare, last a item of nostalgia. (3)
COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Australia, Centennial International Exhibition, Melbourne, Silver Exhibitors Medal, 1888, to the Rottweil Gunpowder Factory of Germany, struck at the Royal Mint, melbourne, ornate crowned bust left, after Boehm, rev Southern Cross within wreath of native flora, named on edge “Pulverfabrik Rottweil”, 51mm (Carlisle 1888/8). Good extremely fine, with even light tone and an interesting association item. 1456 Exhibitors medals were struck. Originally designed by E. A. Altman, it was re-worked by George Anderson of the Mint, the dies were then cut by Stokes and Martin, and the medal was struck by the Royal Mint. Traces of the signatures remain to left and right of the date on the reverse, whilst below the wreath are the initials C.V.
COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Germany, World War I, a souvenir shaped piece of coal stamped GOT STRAFE ENGLAND 1914-191[5], and with two crossed mining picks, the text mirrored on the base, 180mm x 60mm, contained in a custom-made wooden box with sliding lid. The top surface a little rough round the edges, a most curious item in a remarkably good state of preservation. The wooden box with its sliding lid is reminiscent of the (much smaller) cases made for the German Prisoner of War camp medals, and this may be the work of prisoners.
CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN AMERICA Coinage, Mexico, Republic, So-Called Pattern 8-Escudos or 8-Reales, undated, c.1840’s, struck in brass, eagle on cactus, rev wreath, PARIS / T, plain edge (cf KM Pn17, 19, etc, obverse). Struck with a curious cental ‘lug’ on the reverse, very fine, rare. The lug might have once been some sort of suspension device, making the coin a display item. See also lot 1692, a somewhat similar piece for Uruguay.
CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN AMERICA Coinage, Uruguay, Republic, so-called Pattern 8-Reales, undated, c.1844, struck in brass, large oval armorial shield, rev wreath, SARANDI / YTUSAINGO / RINCON DE LAS / GALLINAS, corded edge (cf KM 10, obverse). An unusual Victorian pottery teapot cover and stand each item printed in green with an Indian hunting pattern within leaf scroll and flower borders the cartouche shaped teapot with arched foot fitting a similarly shaped stand green printed marks registered shape 281720 RDNO285771 24cm across (3)
A rare ash ladderback 'Whalers' armchair North American probably New England late 18th century with turned supports and a rush seat each arm terminating in a stylised Sperm Whale heads losses and re-tipping h.131cm. w.56cm. For another American ladderback armchair without these whale motifs see Victor Chinnery Oak Furniture The British Tradition Woodbridge 1979 p. 522 fig. 4.253. Wallace Nutting Furniture of the Pilgrim Century Dover 1965 Vol. 1 p. 271 pl. 485 illustrates a similar chair which he writes originates from Connecticut. Broke Jobe and Myrna Kaye New England Furniture: The Colonial Era Boston 1984 p. 312 item. 79 illustrate and discuss another 'slat-back' armchair which originates from Eastern Massachusetts with similar scrolled arms and flattened bobbin mouldings to its stretcher rails. The eastern sea board of New England has a strong whaling tradition with centres such as Nantucket famously associated with this industry. The naively carved representations of a Sperm Whale to each arm of this chair are very unusual but relate closely to a folk art tradition associated with whaling and usually evidenced in scrimshaw work.
