x Uganda Combination Covers 1899 (20 Feb.) front from Rev. Charles William Hattersley to England, bearing 1896 4a. black, [4] with bent "ate" in "protectorate", in combination with BEA 2½a. deep blue (2), all cancelled by Kampala c.d.s.; some creasing and with non-contemporary hand stamp at right; an unusual item overfranked by 3a. after the introduction of the Imperial Penny Postage rate in British East Africa. Photo Note: The Imperial Penny Postage rate was implemented on 25 December 1898, in British East Africa. News of this rate change, and a decision to implement it in Uganda took several months causing confusion and overfranked covers. Postal officials in Uganda and BEA were concerned about the significant loss of revenue and need for additional government funding of the postal system. It is believed to have been fully implemented in Uganda during March 1898 View Terms & Conditions

Smith, Robert C; D G Pollard Rhodesia. A postal history - its stamps, posts and telegraphs (with 1970 supplement and 1980 Rhodesia Stamp Catalogue) 250 x 190; 245 x 180; 220 x 150 Despite chipping and rubbing, there is only minor loss to the dustjacket of the main item in this lot. The scarlet simulated leather boards, gilt to the spine, are very good. There is some paper loss to the front paste-down and the other endpapers are sunned at the edges. The 453 pp of illustrated text and appendixes are printed on coated paper and are very good. The v + 62 pp illustrated supplement is on even better paper and is unmarked and undiscoloured. The 2-col card wraps are rubbed along the spine, back and front. The wrappers of the 141 pp sewn-section flat-back catalogue are also rubbed but the main image panels are clear. In colour throughout, this is a generally excellent compilation and production, but the printer and repro house apologise on a sticker at the front for the poor reproduction of colour and perforation definition and four of the pages, and enclose a correction sheet thata makes the perforations clear - what service! This attractive small collection does justice to this short-lived country`s brightly designed and well-printed postal material. Good to Very Good Salisbury Author; Rhodesian Philatelic Agencies 1967; 1970; 1980 Click here to view further details and images and to bid

WWI – Royal Flying Corps/RAF Propeller Blade from a pre-1918 British fighter plane with laminated hardwood surface original crackle varnish finish approx 51x10ins. Inset in the blade is a long panoramic photograph (approx 40x7ins) showing a large group of more than 200 army and air force personnel both men and women including approx 12 RAF officers and a substantial number of airmen. The photograph shows signs of ageing with some discolouration and some images partially faded however the majority of people depicted can be identified. To the verso of the blade are a pair of hanging hooks and therefore it is likely that this was a display item which hung for many years in either a service base or an ex-servicemen’s club. The identities of the personnel depicted in the photograph are unclear but it is likely that these were the staff of an RAF HQ unit or depot possibly a base in Northern France in view of there being over 60 members of the Queen Mary’s Auxiliary Army Corps whose uniforms can be clearly identified by their distinctive uniforms and hats. The main bases for the QMAAC were at Wimereux in Flanders (which was their HQ) as well as at Calais Etaples Abbeville Rouen and Le Havre. The QMACC was a short lived organisation operating from April 1918 to September 1921 when it was disbanded and evolved into the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps. Formed under the orders of Earl Haig members carried out administrative duties so that men could be released for front line operations. Due to the destruction by enemy bombing in WWII of many army personal records there are few official photographs of members of the QMACC. This large group portrait is therefore considered extremely rare and offers material for considerable further research.

Pringle, Thomas Narrative of a Residence in South Africa . . . (New Edition, 1840) ` . . . To which is prefixed a biographical sketch of the author by Josiah Conder` Thomas Pringle came to South Africa with his family from Scotland in a party of 1820 Settlers. They established their Glen Lynden estate in the Albany district, but Thomas soon moved to Cape Town, where he became an activist with John Fairbairn and others for press freedom in the colony and an advocate for the abolition of slavery. Pursuing this work, he moved to London, where he was appointed secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society. Early in 1834, the year of his death, he completed what was effectively his last work, `African Sketches`, with prose and poetry sections and dedicated to his father, Robert Pringle, who had remained in Glen Lynden. Later in the same year, he decided to omit the poetry section and to republish the work as a `Narrative of a Residence in South Africa`. He wrote the preface on 12 November 1834. Meanwhile his poor health made a warmer climate desirable and he booked a passage back to the Cape. He was destined not to leave London, however, dying there only three weeks later. The 1840 `new edition` is set in xvi + 116 pp of double-column type, of which Conder`s biography (`Life of the Author`) occupies pp ix-xvi. This copy is quarter-bound in tan calf and green buckram with the title gilt-stamped on the spine between two raised bands. The cloth is lightly rubbed towards the outside edges. On the front paste-down of the plain cream endpapers is the bookplate of Philip Wathen Court. A cancelled stamp of the International African Institute is on the half-title. Although there are a few marginal marks, a few words lost from the top two lines of one column of pp 41-44 and minor repairs to the top edges of pp 45/46 and 65/66, this remains an attractive copy of this rare item. Publisher Place: London Publisher: Edward Moxon Publication Date: 1840 Condition: Very Good Size: 230 x 155 Category: Africana Reserve: $75

Original art work by P.E. de Bruyn Tengbergen Proposed new Coat of Arms for the amalgamation of the Orange Free State and Transvaal Republics The original art work is in good condition, but is a bit toned from sunlight. It is firmly mounted on a board and although it came framed, prospective buyers must be aware of postage costs to include the frame and the original glass will only be posted on special request. The rear mounting board is in poor condition, but it contains important pen notes and should be sold with this item. This pen, pencil and paint art work has a unique history that has not been written up yet. The pen notes on the rear of the frame`s backing board are difficult to read because of staining and warping: `Painted by P.E. de Bruyn Tengbergen Landrust(sic) of Swaziland 1895....(illegible)..Coat of Arms for the Proposed Amalgamation of the Republics ZA Republiek and Republiek van Oranja Vrystaat.` The history of attempts to unify the two Boer Republics, roughly between 1860 and 1902, left traces in very few history books, and has to be researched in footnotes, archives and government documents of the time. The art work itself is not dated or signed, but the word `Amajuba` indicates after 1881. CONDITION DETAILS: The artwork is attached to a piece of stiff board and is in decent condition. It is the piece of backing board that is in poor condition, but it should not be discarded because of the pen inscription, the only provenance. It is not known who wrote the pen inscription. See image of frame - it is in acceptable condition. Publication Date: Circa post 1881 Size: 169mm x 231mm Frame: 334mm x 385mm Category: Africana Reserve: $75 Click here to view further details and images
