Property of a lady living in Kent, UK; formerly part of her grandfather's collection; acquired in Germany after WWII; thence by descent 2006. This type of necklace was manufactured by the Sarmatians in the time of their greatest expansion, beginning between the 4th and 3rd century BC, when they expanded to inhabit the area from Vistula River to the mouth of the Danube and eastward to the Volga, bordering the shores of the Black and Caspian Seas as well as the Caucasus to the south. The area known to the Greco-Roman world as Sarmatia covers modern-day Ukraine and Southern Russia as well as the north-eastern Balkans and areas around Moldova. From the second century BC, the Sarmatians played an important role in the Pontic region, establishing close links with the Greek colonies there, leading to considerable cultural exchange. This style of necklace has been found across the region known as Sarmatia, especially in Ukraine, and displays strong influence from the late Greek Hellenistic jewellery traditions. In the 1st century AD, the Sarmatians began encroaching upon the Roman Empire in alliance with Germanic tribes. In the 3rd century AD, their dominance of the Pontic Steppe was broken by the Germanic Goths. With the Hunnic invasions of the 4th century, many Sarmatians joined the Goths and other Germanic tribes (Vandals) in the settlement of the Western Roman Empire. Very fine condition.

Lot 153

A full sized 1910-vintage Pathe-Freres hand cranked 35mmsilent film projector. The Pathe company has been synonymous with the film industry for over 120 years. And in many ways Pathe, and the 4 brothers who founded it, could be considered the Edisons of Europe- starting life as a fledgling reseller of phonographs in 1896, and rounding out the 20th century as a major innovator of photographic, audio, and film technology, not to mention a global media distributor. Anyone lucky enough to catch a double feature during the golden age of cinema will remember Pathe as the name behind the eponymous newsreels of the 40s and 50s; and many timeless films, both European and American, were shot and projected on Pathe-engineered machines. The Pathe No. 1 Imperial- sometimes referred to as The English Model- began production around 1908, and continued well into the teens. It was originally offered as a hand-cranked unit but could be easily modified into an electric drive system and accepts a number of different lighting systems depending on the type of projection needed. Renowned in its era as one of the sturdiest, most flexible designs on the market, the No. 1 was used for both traveling and permanent exhibitions, and is replete with turned bronze gearing, optional Mallet system swing-open safety spool boxes, a fully adjustable and collapsing lens, automatic winder, and a rigid, intricate frame. This example, Serial no. 3063, is in its original orientation: hand operated, with a Geneva drive linkage and large, external 'pin-wheel' shutter. Two antique 12 inch 35mm reels are included. Decked in Pathe cocoa brown enamel, mounted to a sturdy iron and oak stand, it makes an extraordinary display piece, evoking the earliest days of motion picture history; the quiet whirring of the shutter and spinning of the gears are still a charm to behold, and the crank turns easily in the hand. A section of color film leader completes the look. Issued: c. 1910 Dimensions: 62"H x 32"L x 14"D Manufacturer: Pathe-Freres Provenance: Private Collection Country of Origin: France Condition: Wear and patina consistent with age, and use To view the video for this item, click the link below:Pathe-Freres hand-cranked 35mm film projector

Lot 24a

Europe, Neoclassical, ca. 19th century CE. A very large and impressively carved sardonyx cameo depicting Athena (Roman Minerva), goddess of wisdom and war, depicted profile facing left, and mounted in a beautiful 16K+ gold brooch setting. Athena wears a fabulous helmet pushed up to the top of her head so as to release her long wavy locks of hair which cascade to her shoulders and also fall before her ear. The Apulo-Corinthian helmet presents a pronounced human mustachioed and bearded face in front and an impressive hippocamp swimming left on the dome. The head of a serpent, with its mouth openand tongue extended, rises from a rectangular holder. What's more, its segmented body resolves in long, wavy ribbon-like forms, similar to the goddess' tresses. In a word, this piece of wearable art is absolutely BREATHTAKING! Size: 2.125" H (5.4 cm); total weight: 36.9 gramsThe Apulo-Corinthian helmet has been found almost exclusively in southern Italy. It is based on the Greek Corinthian helmet, but was adapted in Italy in the late 6th to 4th century BCE. It was best known for being adorned with pronounced human visages in the front and real and mythical animals along the cheeks and sides. In addition, it usually had a long-tailed crest that rose above the dome.cf Berlin, antikenmuseum, inv. L 29 & L 30, published in Angelo Bottini et al, antike Helme (Mainz, 1988), cat. Nos. 39 & 40, pp. 420-423; for a drawing of this type of helmet with the pronounced crest, see Bottini, fig. 1, p. 108. Cf. a Roman carnelian intaglio with a similar Athena wearing a helmet composed of two satyr heads, once in the Burton Y. Berry collection, now in the Indiana University Art Museum, inv. 64.70.70, published in Ancient Gems from the Collection of Burton Y. Berry (Bloomington, IN, 1968), cat. No. 152, p. 84. Lot 37b

Greek, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. An incredible example of the beauty and precision of Hellenistic gold work, this is the end of a strap from a diadem, its surface composed of a piece of gold sheet decorated with six bands of woven wires on top and bottom (gold is 92% pure, equivalent to 22K+). Between these are diamonds made of woven wires, with rosettes made of granulations set in their centers. Around the intact, curved end, larger granules form a rounded border. Imagine how this sumptuous item would have looked when worn, pressed against a woman's hair, gleaming in the light of an oil lamp or the sun. Size: 3.75" W x 0.85" H (9.5 cm x 2.2 cm); 1.6" H (4.1 cm) on included custom stand; gold is 92% pure, equivalent to 22K+; total weight: 10.78 gramsThe diadem is one of the oldest and most characteristic articles of women's jewelry that originated in the Greek world. While wreaths and coronets were worn by men as signs of social or political status, and as funerary objects, diadem were worn solely by women, usually strictly for decorative purposes. Numerous examples in gold have been found in necropolises in southern Italy, Macedonia, and on the Black Sea coast, testifying to the great refinement of Greek jewelry-making during the Hellenistic period, and to the widespread diffusion of decorative motifs throughout the Mediterranean basin. Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Shlomo Moussaieff collection, Israel, formed 1948 to 2000, exported with the permit of the Israeli Antiquities Authority Condition: Piece is a fragment as shown, with loss from one end. Form is slightly bent. The granulation that remains is in beautiful condition. Lot 45a

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderfully-preserved cast bronze roundel, made to be applied decoratively to an item of Roman furniture or armor, featuring a striking face of Medusa. Medusa was the most famous of the three gorgons, human women with venomous snakes for hair. The concept of the gorgon, a frightening, beast-like, female creature, is at least as old as Homer and continued to be used as a monstrous symbol throughout the Roman period, especially popular as decoration on pottery. Here she is depicted as more beautiful than usual, with large, striking eyes that stare straight forward as you gaze upon her and her murderous locks. Size: 3.2" W (8.1 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.Exhibited in "Dressed to Kill in Love and War: Splendor in the Ancient World", February 1 - March 31, 2019, Academy Art Museum, Maryland, USA, published in the exhibition guide by Sarah E. Cox and Anke Van Wagenberg, fig. 13. Condition: Smooth, deep green patina and excellent preservation of details. Iron nail on back has encrusted patina. Lot 68a

Ancient Near East, central Anatolia (Turkey), ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A delightful miniature bronze chariot or wagon, pulled by two solid cast oxen, featuring four large, flat, disc-shaped wheels, a rectangular cart with a hinged shaft ending in an attachment for the oxen. Around the body of the chariot is a small railing/balustrade composed of multiple thin bronze wires fixed together. Similar examples - see the Christie's listing below - show that this item would have once had bronze wires that formed reins. Votive chariots like this one are found throughout the ancient Near East and western Asia from this time period, but the Anatolian ones, in contrast to horse-drawn war chariots found in the Levant and Mesopotamia, are drawn by oxen. Are these farm carts? Do they signify the importance of agricultural production in Anatolian society? Whatever the meaning, this piece was made to be placed into a temple, cache, or tomb as an offering. Size: 7.5" W x 2.45" H (19 cm x 6.2 cm)See a similar example that sold at Christie's in 2014 for GBP 50,000 (approximately $70,000 USD): https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/an-anatolian-bronze-chariot-circa-mid-2nd-millennium-5776268-details.aspx Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection Condition: The piece is delicate, with some small losses/breaks on the railing on the top of the chariot. Rich, dark patina on surface with light deposits. Oxen are not attached to cart. Wheels still turn easily and the hinge of the yoke is also movable. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Lot 77d

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A beautiful, fascinating object from a wealthy Byzantine home or church - a round, spoke-like component of a candelabrum. A symmetrical, segmented, openwork motif of crosses gives the piece a clock-like appearance, at least to the modern eye - but in antiquity, this bronze disc would have been held by its three openwork bronze chains, which are still present here, and suspended from a stand by the heavy hook. Candles or lamps would have been set into the round areas of the surface. Size with chains fully suspended: Size: 14" W x 30" H (35.6 cm x 76.2 cm)Bronze furniture was a luxury item in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire that followed, reserved only for the richest households. Even there, they seem to have been heirlooms; some scholars believe that they were passed down through multiple generations, gaining additions like crosses, new lids, or new feet to suit changing decorative styles. Imagine how the light would have played off of this when it was new and polished to shine! Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Janet Zakos collection, Switzerland, acquired in the 1980s Condition: Chain is in excellent condition with some slight bending to form. There are a few tiny notches in the edges of the base - possibly dents, possibly casting flaws - but otherwise this is in excellent condition with a beautiful mottled pale green patina. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #146231

BEATLES SIGNED RECORD PLAYER FROM DUNDEE 1963. Fantastic piece of Beatles history here in the form of a 4 speed 'suitcase' style Fidelity portable record player bearing handwritten signatures in blue ink to inner lid from George Harrison, (two signatures), John Lennon, Paul McCartney (two signatures) and Ringo Starr (two signatures). The item was signed following their performance at Caird Hall, Dundee on October 7th 1963. When the TV provided was not working the group requested something to listen to records on during their time backstage. The vendors older cousin (whose husband was friends with the the promoter Andy Lothian Jr) quickly nipped to the vendors house (as they lived locally) and borrowed her record player. At the request of her cousin they all signed the inside of the record player and also gave her a souvenir coin and one of Paul's guitar strings. The vendor took all 3 to school that same week but unfortunately the string and coin went "missing". The vendor has included a scanned copy of a newspaper article, which mentions the group using a record player backstage during the evening and has also included a signed letter of provenance.

DAVID BOWIE LOST ZION TAPE - ALTERNATE ALADDIN SANE ALBUM. A tantalising and fascinating prospect for any discerning Bowie collector here with an almost completely different version of the classic 1973 album. Each track on this tape has notable differences to the released album, ranging from completely different, likely unheard takes to alternate vocals, instrumental compositions and mixes. Since the recording of Aladdin Sane in 1973 fans have wondered about the existence of a rumoured 'lost track' - thought to be titled 'Zion'. Was it cut and then binned in favour of 'Lady Grinning Soul'? Was it actually titled 'A Lad In Vein', a version which has appeared on bootlegs? The answer is found here on this boxed reel of Emitape, containing mastered mixes of the 8 tracks that comprise Aladdin Sane, recorded at Trident Studios. The handwritten notes on the original Trident Studios label reveal early hesitancy about the composition of the title 'Aladdin Sane', with amendments (in a different pen) breaking up the two words (to form A Ladd Insane) and also show the last track, which is marked clearly as 'Zion'. Listening to the the tape reveals the running order follows as standard, with the last track playing (as true to the released version) 'Lady Grinning Soul'. ** Please note this item is sold as an artefact only and no copyright (s) are included in this sale.

Of the six tracks on this tape, three of the six contain differences to the released version. Differences include: on Hang on to Yourself, a different take with alternate vocals, effects (including echo), instrumentation. The tracks listed (and their corresponding track length as per the digitised version) are: Hang on to Yourself (2.37), Ziggy Stardust (3.22), Velvet Goldmine (3.18), Holy, Holy (2.28), Soul Love (3.52), Lady Stardust (3.27). One handwritten note to label reads 'Wrong Line Up for Ziggy Stardust', another symbol indicates that Ziggy Stardust and Hang On.. should be swapped in the tracklisting. The winning bidder will receive a digitised copy of the recording. Many of the tracks are 'rougher' mixes, with differences notable between this and the released version. The annotations on the box label are in the hand of producer Ken Scott. ** Please note this item is sold as an artefact only and no copyright (s) are included in this sale.
