Charles Dickens First Edition Book 'The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club', Victorian era, circa 1837. A mixed issue first edition of ''The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club'' aka ''The Pickwick Papers'' by Charles Dickens, published in London by Chapman and Hall, 186 Strand, with illustrations by Seymour & Phiz, as well as the front piece and vignette title page. It also has early issue points such as ''S. Veller'' present on page 342, line 5. In a move familiar to modern fandom, publishers often created special editions - as this one is with its hand-drawn illustrations - in order to entice buyers to purchase more than one copy. Size: 6'' W x 8.95'' H (15.2 cm x 22.7 cm). ''Pickwick'' was Dickens' first novel. He was 24, working as a journalist and sketch writer, when the publishers, Chapman and Hall, asked him to author small comic stories based on a series of illustrated plates to be made by Robert Seymour. Dickens accepted the commission but the stories quickly took on a life of their own. Seymour illustrated the first few, and then Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne) the rest. The latter proved to be a fruitful partnership and Phiz went on to illustrate many of Dickens' books. The character of Sam Weller in Pickwick led to the book becoming a massive publishing phenomenon, with bootleg copies, joke books, and other merchandise as well as multiple unlicensed stage productions. Real Pickwick Clubs sprang up about the country, including the Pickwick Bicycle Club in London, which is still in operation, and whose members are bestowed with a name of a character from the novel. This book is in aged condition, with a detached front cover and some loose pages, but a rare and collectible item. See accompanying images.

The hallmarks underneath the bottom are fairly rubbed but legible with the year letter just legible. The hinge appears to be in good order and the top shuts properly. The hinged top has a gilded interior which is fully hallmarked to the underside of the interior. The main body of the cylindrical scent has a cut glass stopper which appears to be in very tightly. Otherwise the engraving is nice and crisp and is a good item.
A large late 19th century Continental porcelain vase of elaborate rococo form; the central vignette depicting one of Henry VIII's wives pleading for her life before the seated monarch, hand-decorated and gilded etc., with 'C' scrolls and scrolling foliage and cherub-like figures including a lower cherubic-like figure sitting within an arbour, the reverse central vignette detailing allegories of music, the gilding above a celeste-blue ground (some damage to top but the piece present), impressed mark to underside (41.5cm high) This is not perfect, there is a piece away from the left hand handle which is present within the vase. The rest of this appears to be in reasonable condition, there is some rubbing on the gilding but the items appears to be in good general condition commensurate with age. This item is being sold on behalf of the Blue Cross
An interesting brass/bronze mounted Mandarin's hat finial with orange coloured glass ball (Chinese, Qing Dynasty), the 3.5cm diameter circular base with a collection number to the underside, 6cm This item is not perfect even though it looks good from afar, it has two vertical cracks and a horizontal very thin hairline to the glass. A good 19th century dome-topped walnut lap desk, hinged lid opening to reveal fitted interior with cartouche-shaped white-marble writing surface and fold-out stationery rack and other compartments etc., 30.5cm wide There appears to be no major damage to the writing slope, the colour is quite good. On the left hand side at the top it is bubbling very slightly towards the edge. Being super critical the hinge cover does not shut perfectly, it is lifting slightly mainly to the right hand side. Opening the item there is a cartouche shaped white marble tablet and the gilded leather surround, pen tray and writing surface etc., looks original and in good order.
An early 19th century rosewood painting frame; each corner decorated in relief with rosewood and maple triangular sections (69cm x 46cm)Generally this is in reasonable order as per the image on the website, below the lot number on the right hand side there appears to be a 0.75cm square piece away from the veneer. There is also a 1cm piece away from the veneer on the bottom frame around 8/9cm in from the right hand side. There are minor scratches and scuffs to be expected with this item which is approx. 180/190 years old. The rosewood is veneered onto pine which has oxidised over age and there are some old age marks etc. Quite a lot of accumulated dust around the edges of the frame and some scratches around the edges of the frame not viewable when the frame is in correct position. There is also a small match head sized piece of veneer away from the lower left hand side where the veneer effectively runs over the frame. The corners look good and in our opinion the frame could be brought back with a minimum of effort by a good restorer to near perfect condition.

Linda Ferber (USA) bloodwood decorated bowl 8x17cm. Signed Ray was an artist, teacher, and a friend. It was an humbling honour to be chosen for this tribute collaboration. Ray's contributions to woodturning often reflected his quick wit and sense of humour. Our conversations covered a full range of topics with Ray offering nuggets of wisdom both for woodturning organizations and personal life. Ray’s keen eye for design, dedication to detail, and passion for turning were evident in his work throughout his prolific career. Early in Ray’s career he made wooden mice as a craft item. I added a little mouse holding a flower in Ray’s bloodwood bowl to signify this beginning, with one fallen pedal representing Ray. However, his legacy lives and continues to blossom through this tribute. Stay sharp and turn safe The Ray Key Collaboration Auction
Mary Ashton (UK) spalted beech footed bowl 8x20cm. Signed I first met Ray whilst at my first AWGB Seminar in 2005. I had made a couple of pieces for the gallery and was nervously excited whilst watching the gallery critique realising that one of my pieces was in line behind Ray awaiting his keen eyed appraisal. My piece was just about to be handed to him when the critique was drawn to a swift close due to overrunning time, other exciting events on the timetable couldn’t wait. Max Carey and other club members next to me noticed my disappointment, and as all were disappearing off excitedly to their next engagement, Max dragged me across the room to introduce me to Ray, who kindly agreed to give me a personal critique. I remember feeling quite overwhelmed when Ray was so complimentary about the shape and finish of my piece, with the knowledge that he was such an expert in both these fields himself. I went away with a huge smile on my face was even bigger the next morning when I found my piece had been picked from the gallery to be part of the travelling expedition. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the seminar due to receiving a grant from the AWGB. Of course the AWGB and consequently the seminar, and grants would not exist if Ray had not got together with other like-minded people, and worked to achieve their vision of bringing the woodturning community together for both advancement of skills, and just as importantly socially. I am hugely grateful to be part of this woodturning community. My Ray Key piece Spalted Beech 3 footed bowl ~ ‘Milliput’ used to fill fissure ~ finished with Danish oil and microcrystalline wax When my selected ‘roughed’ item arrived in the post I was rather concerned about the large fissure which appeared more daunting than I remembered in the image I had seen. After initial panic and much deliberation considering artistic removal of ‘the gash’ (not easy with its position on the item), I decided filling seemed the only option. My main aim with taking part in this collaboration was to make something, hopefully with good, simple form which was evident even in Rays roughed out shape, and also knowing that Ray would not let any piece leave his workshop unless it was well finished I wished to achieve this too.
