EARLY 20"" LIVE STEAM MARKLIN PLEASURE/RIVERBOAT. Typical of the Marklin firm they made a variety of toys from the later part of the 18th century through the mid 20th century that by today`s standards were excellent quality, intrinsically pleasing and highly sought after by collectors today. This particular example circa 1910 is of a pleasure boat the ""Priscilla"" that would have traveled in real life, the lakes and rivers of the world. The Marklin firm utilized 3 methods of propulsion, a clock work mechanism, an electric motor powered by battery and in this case a live steam motor. Oftentimes because of the live steam method and being in water the boat after 100+ years would be in poor finish and thus as in this case needing restoration. This particular boat has been fully restored to its original glory and quite possibly their might be a few replacement parts such as the masts and or lifeboats? Expert restoration including some wear and grazing to the paint give the impression that the boat actually is in remarkable original finish. Back in the day this was quite an expensive toy and it is hard to believe that this was actually a play toy for a male youth. Typical of Marklin so much attention paid to the details, including the striped deck, funnels, lifeboats, etc. A wonderful item for a collector and at only a fraction of the price of one in pristine original finish! SIZE: 20"" long. CONDITION: Expert older restoration. Boat including steam plant appear to be intact and complete, lacking only the rear flat on stern of boat. 1-13651

Lot 3568

PHENOMENAL THREE-DIMENSIONAL LEADED GLASS SHOE STORE TRADE SIGN. On occasion a fabulous piece of any nature comes to the market, having been tucked away for perhaps 50, 80, or even 100 years. Oftentimes, there is no provenance or history attached to said item. But on rare occurrence, this information comes to light along with the extraordinary piece itself. Please read below the history of the shoe`s origins as well as view the accompanying photo showing the former location of the sign in the present day. Unfortunately we were unable to secure a photo of the shoe in use during the time period. Adolph Schauder emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1893. He settled in the northern Wisconsin town of Rhinelander. Adolph brought nothing with him other than leather so he could reestablish himself as a shoemaker and provide for his family. He was able to purchase a two story building in downtown Rhinelander on Brown Street. His shop was on street level and the family living quarters were directly above. Four generations continued this business until it was closed in 1989 having operated for 96 years. There were no heirs to inherit and continue the business. It is not exactly clear when Adolph had this incredible trade sign created, but we have been told by family members that it was created and put in place in the earliest part of the 20th century. At some point, the shoe was taken down from its outside display area and relegated to the basement. A family member recalls that often on the Fourth of July, the shoe would make an appearance in the town parade with family members strapping it to the roof of the car for all to see and remember. After the shoe store closed, the new owner of the building held an auction to dispose of various items left in the building. The consignor of this item attended the public auction at the shoe store`s location and was stunned to see this fabulous item that was never even mentioned in the auction flyer. Due to age and the wish to downsize, they have decided to liquidate and consolidate their various treasures. At first appearance, one thinks of this as a boot, but in reality, it was designed as a shoe and the white glass actually simulates a spat. The lettering ""S&S"" is done in burgundy glass and was perhaps meant to represent Schauder & Son. The heel of the shoe is actually a tin surround with an opening at the bottom. The top of the shoe has a covering and most likely at one point had an electrical fixture to light up the shoe. A hole on the underside of the shoe would allow for easy access to change the light bulb. Although the actual glass pieces have not been counted, it must easily be in excess of a few hundred pieces. As one would expect, there have probably been some aged repairs to some of the leading and glass tiles, but the piece is firm, solid and intact. The shoe itself utilized amber colored glass to simulate leather and as previously discussed, the spat is a creamy white with the burgundy S&S lettering. The toe area of the shoe employs a different style of glass being of a green color. Truly an amazing and most important folk art trade sign to come fresh to the market and undoubtedly a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of this magnitude. SIZE: 25-1/2"" h x 36"" l x 12-1/2"" w. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-14108

Lot 3626

CAMERA MACHINE GUN. It`s not every day one will come across an extreme rarity like this. When commercial air travel began to hit its stride in the 1930s its use as a military application was already in its stride and being perfected. The US War Dept. (which eventually changed names to the Defense Dept.) was training combat pilots to an unstoppable force. Since it wasn`t practical to practice with live ammunition the US Army Air Corp with the help of engineers at Fairchild Aviation developed a camera gun that operated like the machine guns the airmen were used to firing while being able to record their maneuvers to improve shooting accuracy. This item in heavy gauge nickel plated bronze was designed to mount in an aircraft like the machine guns of the period with an interior to hold film with the trigger snapping pictures at a rate of up to 6 frames per second. Complete with cross-hair sites, wooden handles and a long barrel it mimicked the look of the military machine gun. Affixed with an official plaque identifying it along with a serial number of ""A.C. 37-217"". Accompanied by documents pertaining to aerial photography including an equally rare official War Dept. technical manual dated July 8, 1941 and a de-classified manual for aerial gunnery dated August 1919 (these were most often destroyed) as well as correspondence between the present consignor and aeronautical historians about the camera gun. A fabulous trove of information and historically significant piece of modern military history. SIZE: 37"" l. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Modelled upon the French Foudroyant, Nelson took great interest in her development and had intentions of making her his flagship as soon as she was launched, but took the Vanguard instead as Foudroyant had not yet been completed. Nelson transferred his flag to the Foudroyant in 1799 while dealing with the return of the Neapolitan Royal family to Naples, she returned under the flag of Captain John Clarke Searle in June 1801. Foudroyant returned home after the Napoleonic wars to become the guardship of Plymouth in 1819 and was converted to a gunnery training ship in 1862, a role she undertook until 1894 when she returned to port duties. In 1891 she was sold out of service and immediately resold to a German shipbreaking company, the ensuing public protest led to her being repurchased by Wheatly Cobb who refitted her as a training ship. In order to recoup the £20,000 cost of refitting she was taken around English seaside resorts for exhibition, but was wrecked at Blackpool in 1897 during a violent storm. The wreck was sold for £250 to a Mr Hayhurst who began to dismantle the ship, but relinquished the task when a passer by was injured by a dynamite blast, after which she was purchased by the Manchester firm of Goodall Lamb & Heighway.

A RARE BRAMELD EARTHENWARE CANDELABRUM comprised of nine baluster, globular, shield shaped and cylindrical elements applied with moulded acanthus leaves and flowerheads in yellow and gilt on an apple green ground, on brass foot, 154cm h, printed circular DALE`S PATENT MANUFACTURED AT THE ROYAL ROCKINGHAM WORKS and griffin mark, 1838-42 Provenance: (possibly) anon. sale Sotheby`s, early 20th century, one of a pair of candelabra (see below). Literature: Evans (J G & M I N), Rockingham The Final Fling, NCS Journal 1, 1972-3, pp 63-7, the present example, or its pair, illustrated plts 20A and 22. In February 1838 the Brameld partners entered into an agreement with William Dale of Shelton, Staffordshire to manufacture his patent `Columns, Pillars, Bedposts and other like articles.` The present candelabrum pillar would originally have supported a colza lamp or candle branches and, with its pair, was discussed at length in an article by Mr & Mrs Evans in 1972-3 (see Literature). Since every item was a costly tour de force to produce it is not surprising that few examples of ceramic furniture were made. Even by the 1870s, Llewellyn Jewitt, who not only owned several but also Dale`s designs, was writing in his Ceramic Art of Great Britain that "...they are now of very great rarity. " ++One of two elements with slight defects/repair, but in essentially good condition
