An exceptionally rare card invitation to the opening of John Lennon’s You Are Here exhibition that took place at the Robert Fraser Gallery, 69 Duke Street, Grosvenor Square, London on 1st July 1968. The front of the card reads ‘to Yoko from John Lennon first exhibition opens July 1’. This is the first example of the invitation card that we have seen. The invitation comes with a original pin badge from the show. The small metal badge has a white background with the words ‘You Are Here’ printed in black. It also comes with a sixties black and white press photograph of John and Yoko attending the event. On the website Johnlennon.com John recalls: 'After I first met Yoko, I sort of blasted open in my head. She encouraged me to make films, make more far-out music, gallery exhibitions, make more of the art I was doing privately. Anything I was doing, she encouraged me to do it. So just after we met, I put on a gallery show at Robert Fraser Gallery in London, which is about one of the only sort-of swinging kind-of places London had. And I put on a show there called ‘You Are Here’. Out of the blue. I had never done anything like that before. It consisted of a bare gallery and a big white canvas that was round and it just had my writing on it: ‘you are here’ and I dedicated it to Yoko. You came in on the top floor of the gallery. You had to go downstairs. And down at the bottom of the stairs were lots of different charity cans like RSPCA, animal and cancer funds and dogs and people – the room was full of them. And you had to get through all these different charity cans – you know, to put money in. And people put money in. I wrote to a lot of charities telling them about the exhibition. I had a lot of nice letters and a lot of charity boxes back. There are no hidden secrets. My art is in fact displaying these boxes for charity. And you got to the other end of the room and on the left side of the wall was this big, big canvas with ‘You Are Here’.The invitation measures 17.75cm x 10.25cm (5 inches x 4 inches). There are three pin holes in the item. The condition is very good minus. The badge measures 2.5cm (1 inch) in diameter. The condition is very good. The photograph measures 20.5cm x 25.5cm (8 inches x 10 inches). The condition is very good minus.Provenance of the badge: comes with a 6 sided letter from the original recipient to his family. In the letter there is a paragraph that reads as follows:‘I went to meet Sue from work last Saturday dinner time, and as I had an hour to spare went to some art galleries. I haven’t been to any for ages, I gave John Lennon my swastika key and he gave me a little badge (He’s got an exhibition at a gallery with lots of collection boxes and a rusty bicycle and balloons)’. The letter is dated 5th August 1968.

Lot 1288

A Late 17th Century Panelled Oak Chest In Two Sections, with moulded edge to top, fitted four long drawers with geometric moulded fronts, on bun feet, 44ins wide x 23ins deep x 42ins highTo the top there is some heavier scattered scratching and darker staining. In between the three planks that make up the top there is some slight signs of shrinkage with horizontal splits from one end to the other. The top has a nice patina and colouration however has historic areas of dry rot. All three front edges of the top are generally rubbed with some slight edge knocks. On the left hand side top panel has a shrinkage split running horizontally from one end to the other and on the same panel at the front there is a small shrinkage split running vertically from one end to the other. The next panel down has a small area of timber loss around 1ins x 3ins long in a rectangular section.  To the right hand side there is slightly uneven fading and there is a pale residue build-up at the very top. This lot appears to have had replacement handles at some point in its lifetime.  General heavier wear to the plinth base and feet commensurate with age.  At the back the top board appears to have been replaced. Overall the item is structurally sound however there is some movement in the joints.
