After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. His sophisticated selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.Mikhail Tarkhanov (1888-1962) was a Russian avant-garde graphic artist known for his abstract, water-based textured compositions. He graduated from the Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry in 1915, later enrolling at VKhUTEMAS, where he studied under Vasili Kandinsky and Vladimir Favorsky. From 1932 until his death, the exhibition of abstract art was banned, so he secretly pursued his abstract work while working officially for various Soviet institutions. He was able to exhibit his beautiful, unique compositions only a handful of times from 1919 to 1931, alongside artists such as Natan Altman, El Lissitzky, Kazimir Malevich, and Alexander Rodchenko. Much of his oeuvre has remained unseen until the present. Tarkhanov`s works are included in the permanent collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, and at the Getty Center.

Referred to and illustrated in A History of the Harpsichord by Edwards L. Kittick, pp. 136-137, 485, note 23, Plate 6-4. Also see 'Some Notes on Giovanni Battista Boni da Cortona, Giralmo Zenti and others' by Frederick Hammond , Galpin Society Journal XL, December 1987, pp.37-47 for further information on the maker. A further reference to this harpsichord can be found in an article 'Italian Split-key Instruments with fewer than Nineteen Divisions to the Octave' by Christopher Stembridge and Denzil Wraight, the Journal of Performance Practice, 1994, No.2, p. 156, Item 7.The attribution to G. B. Boni is courtesy of Dr. Denzil Wraight who is quoted in Boalch in a letter to the owner "the lower moulding identifies the instrument quite conclusively…Thus I have no doubt about the attribution. The moulding referred to is illustrated in silhouette in The Historic Harpsichord, Volume III (editor Howard Schott) in the chapter 'The Identification and Authentication of Italian String Keyboard Instruments' by Denzil Wraight, p. 107. The moulding illustrated is from the Boni harpsichord in the Brussels Musical Instrument Museum. This harpsichord has been the subject of a number of alterations including conversion to a two-manual instrument. Under Mr. Mackenzie's instruction it was returned to what was believed to have been its original specification of a single 8ft. register. Boalch suggest that it had passed through the hands of Franciolini but it does not appear in any of his published catalogues. Other owners recorded by Boalch were Elizabeth Moss, Alec Hodsdon and Michael Thomas. A number of respected restorers have worked on the harpsichord in more recent times

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century BCE. A large bronze oil lamp with a nautical theme. Two women's busts in the style of a ship's figurehead project from the short sides of the elongated bowl. Two youths, standing, nude aside from laurel wreaths, and holding large kilikes (wine drinking vessels) form the hooks for twin chains for suspension. The linked chains are hooked onto twin dolphins whose tails join together; above them is an additional long chain terminating in a large loop. Size: 7" L x 10.2" W x 26.5" H (17.8 cm x 25.9 cm x 67.3 cm).Cast using the lost-wax process, this piece displays the technical prowess of Roman artisans. This piece, made of precious metal, would have been an expensive and treasured item, perhaps an heirloom. The design has a rich iconography, much of it relating to the nautical. The ship's figurehead-style women may be goddesses; the Romans favored military, mythological, or monstrous figureheads on their ships. The dolphins, meanwhile, remind us of a powerful and common motif in Roman artwork. The Romans were in part a maritime empire, and the iconography of the sea included dolphins, who they seem to have believed carried souls to the Fortunate Isles, perhaps because they could pass through the air-breathing terrestrial world and into the watery depths that claimed so many Roman sailors' lives. The youths, meanwhile, are not explicitly nautical, but their drinking vessels suggest that they may be at a Symposium, a drinking party for the wealthy. Perhaps this lamp belonged to a family who had become wealthy through maritime trade or naval prowess.See a similar example at the Harvard Art Museum (1990.71). Provenance: Ex-private east coast, USA collection Condition: Intact, with functional chains. Dark green patina overall. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
