Lower, Richard, Tractatus de Corde, Item De Motu & Colore Sanquinis et Chyli in eum Transitu, Amsterdam, Danielem Elsevirium, 1671, 8vo (155mm x 90mm.), title vignette, initials, head-pieces, 6 folding plates at end, blind stamp on left side title margin, contemporary calf, extremities rubbed, Third Edition. 'Lower made the next great advance after Harvey in the physiology of blood circulation when he determined experimentally, with the assistance of Robert Hooke, that venous blood is changed to arterial blood in the lungs by virtue of its contact with air. The experiments leading to this discovery are reported in the third chapter of Lower's De corde, a work that also contains a number of other important observations, such as the scroll-like structure of the cardiac muscle (confirmed 250 years later by Mall), the heart's contractive and expulsive movements, the tamponade effect of pericardial effusion and the limiting effect of pericardial adhesions on the heart.

A magnificent and special LMS white chamber pot. The side displays a gold full Company title crest, and scroll "Central Station Hotel Glasgow", and an embossed flower and leaf design also in gold. The handle is decorated entirely and the rims have gold bands By Dunn Bennett of Burslem. A minor crack below the handle, and base crazing do not detract from what is a very rare item not seen before. What a way to go! The Central Station Hotel Glasgow was opened by the Caledonian Railway in 1885.

The centre displays the pre-Grouping "GWR Tregenna Castle Hotel" garter crest, in a wavy, multi concentric circles design. Four ball feet. A quality item by Mappin & Webb, replated to fine condition. The Tregenna Castle Hotel, St Ives, Cornwall was taken on lease by the GWR in 1878, purchased in 1895 and is still open in private ownership.

An unusual Continental porcelain tobacco jar and cover as the head of a suffragette, in a plumed black hat and impressed " I say Down with the Trousers", painted in colours, 13cm h, c1910 Rare: This type is not in Horowitz (Joe), Figural Tobacco Jars, Baltimore, 1994. In fine condition apart from some insignificant oxidisation of the darker enamels which do not detract from the appearance. No damage or restoration and rare. It is understood that this item was discussed on a televised edition of the BBC tv programme The Antiques Roadshow.

Use of the Greek or Russian Church, ?mid-7th Century,. 330 leaves, handsomely printed in red and black in Slavonic script, 15 well?spaced lines of text per page, with large ornate initials, usually in red, and decorative head?pieces, full?page woodcut of a saint writing at a desk on the verso of the fourth leaf (recto blank), with an integral blank leaf about halfway through the volume, some slight soiling, generally in good, crisp condition, bound in contemp. blindstamped calf over wooden boards, central panel of the upper cover with a blindstamped design of King David playing the harp, with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden on the lower cover, 4 heart?shaped brass bosses at the corners, with a central leaf?shaped brass boss, rebacked c. 1770 in English red morocco, gilt, lettered on 2 black leather labels, and with Mus. Bapt/Bristol/Gifford in gilt on the bottom compartment, spine now rubbed, and chipped at the head, sm. 4to. Bookplate of A. Gifford on the front pastedown, over which the Bristol Baptist College bookplate has been pasted. Earlier ornate signature of Thomas Martin. Gifford himself has supplied an initialled inscription, identifying the item as a "Psalterum Sclavonicu[m]", on a free endpaper. The register appears to be in 8's, although the first gathering comprises only 6 leaves, indicating that 2 leaves, one being the title?page, is missing. (1)

A GWR pre-grouping glass LAMP TABLET "DAWLISH WARREN" etched in black into the white glass. In its original wooden frame, 191/2"x61/2", and complete with its metal hanging brackets. In fine original condition. An exceedingly rare item, pre-dating the enamel signs. Dawlish Warren, on the GWR Devon main line, between Exeter and Newton Abbot, opened in 1912 (to replace an earlier station built nearby as "Warren Halt" in 1905).
