"The Daniel O'Connell Jug" An early 19th Century English porcelain Jug, probably Davenport, of unusual large size profusely decorated with colourful flowers, the neck with a band of scrolling vines in relief and conforming moulded handle, 33cms (13”) high, 38cms (15”) wide, now in a glazed wooden display case; together with a letter from Daniel O’Connell to Ms. Mc Carthy of 62 Dawson Street, in which he refers to the purchase of an item, believed to be the jug, both letters framed. (3) Provenance: In the collection of "The Liberator" Daniel O'Connell; then given to Joseph Dunne, thence Jane Delahoyde of Mullingar, 23 January 1900. Note: A manuscript letter from Jane Delahoyde widow of the late Doctor Delahoyde, Drogheda, states that the jug was presented to Daniel O’Connell while he was in prison. She further states that her late friend, Mr. Joseph Dunne, received it from O’Connell after their release from prison. She had often seen the jug at Mr. Dunne’s house during the lifetime of O’Connell and heard of its history. It was purchased at the auction of Mr.Dunne’s effects upon his departure to Australia. She also remarks on the deep crack to the base which was caused by boiling water being poured into it. The letter signed and dated 23rd January 1900, is also signed by a witness. The original signed manuscript letter offered with the jug.
