Lot 233A

Europe, probably France, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautiful embroidered depiction of Mary and Jesus surrounded by an embroidered frame with four pale, creamy yellow flowers and their vine-like stems. Mary wears red and blue clothing with a white veil; her blonde hair flows freely underneath the veil. She holds her Son, who has curly blonde hair, a chubby body, and angelic features, in a realistic and obviously loving pose. Size of cloth: 5.3" W x 6.5" H (13.5 cm x 16.5 cm); size in frame: 7.35" W x 8.6" H (18.7 cm x 21.8 cm).The embroidery is done on a beautiful piece of silk that fades from cream to pale blue, replicating the color of the sky above the figures' heads. This item was part of a scapular or scapulary, a piece of cloth primarily worn by Roman Catholics to show their devotion to the figures depicted on it. The frame may have been added to this later but seems closely contemporary based on its fading; it is large for a scapular with the frame and there are some signs that the stitching was added later to the initial rectangle. Embroidery was valued by European nobility from the medieval period on, and by the 18th century, it had become both a professional and amateur pursuit - with higher class young women expected to become skilled at embroidery as part of her education. The fine skill of this piece suggests that it was done professionally, made to be sold to someone wishing to show their devotion to the Virgin and Child. Provenance: Ex-private East Coast USA collection Condition: Some fading to colors of cloth and tiny areas of staining/wear to edges. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #119146

Lot 179

Pre-Columbian, Maya region, Late Classic Period, ca. 650 to 750 CE. An incredible piece of ancient craftsmanship, a black and red on cream-orange slip paint cylinder with a codex register of nine glyphs in the Primary Standard Sequence under the red-painted rim and below that two fish with wonderful detail separated by diagonal bars. Cylinder vessels like these seem, from residue analysis, to have been used for drinking chocolate, a hugely popular and ritual practice amongst the Maya, especially Mayan elite. Size: 4.9" W x 3.8" H (12.4 cm x 9.7 cm)This beautiful cylinder has all the hallmarks of a "codex style" vessel. The glyphs and iconography were hand drawn by a skilled artisan in a fine-line painting technique using a monochrome black-brown slip that would have been made from clay mixed with black iron oxide, manganese, and some plant-based compounds. Mayan scribes seem to have wanted to mark the ownership of valued things, and that is what registers of glyphs like the one found here were made to do - mark the owner's name and describe the item. Below that register, the two depictions of the fish are wonderful examples of elaborately drawn "kay" glyphs. Based on their indented fins, they seem to be based on the Cichlids, who are a large family of freshwater fish that live in the lakes and river valleys of Central America and would have been a source of food and also religious practice for the Maya. On these examples, the round body decorations you can see are characteristic of the redhead cichlid (Vieja synspila). Fish are a recurring theme in Mayan art, and seem to indicate that the setting of the artwork is an aquatic environment. Interestingly, because of its sound ("ka"), the fish head glyph can sometimes be used as a doubled or grouped sign to spell "kakaw", the glyph for cocoa - so the decoration on this vessel may relate to its use as a cup for the chocolate drink. Provenance: ex-private North Carolina Collection Condition: Repaired from approximately four large pieces, but repairs are well done and very difficult to see. Paint is clearly visible with minor wear; excellent root marks overall. #119401

Lot 118A

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautiful stone spear point created from a gorgeous chunk of mahogany obsidian (volcanic glass with iron inclusions). The piece is well-crafted, symmetrically knapped to points at both ends, obviously a large prestige item from a rare source of stone. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.6" W x 9.7" H (4.1 cm x 24.6 cm)Obsidian - "iztli" to them - fascinated the ancient Mesoamericans; the Aztecs even had a god, Tezcatlipoca, who was the Lord of the Smoking Obsidian Mirror. The shockingly sharp edges and points of this piece demonstrate its great allure. In a world without metal, this sharp quality was especially important for ceremonies of ritual bloodletting and human sacrifice. The difficult-to-obtain material came from volcanic sources in the Sierra Madre of Mexico and in Guatemala, traded hundreds of miles to meet the demand for sharp cutting tools and ritual objects, and then were struck using a deer antler or small hammer stone to form blades and other shapes. The Colima buried their dead in shaft tombs deep below their residences, alongside the remains of their ancestors. These tombs were richly furnished with ceramic figures, vessels, offerings, and precious stone items of jade and obsidian. Provenance: Ex-Sevilla Collection, Pomona, CA Condition: One point has a very small loss to the chip. #119695

Lot 108C

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, 1500 to 300 BCE. A large! carved, smooth-polished greenstone object in the form of a jaguar with prominent teeth and a magnificent spiral carved tail. The greenstone has brown and black specks. An incised square pattern provides the mouth full of teeth and four small, rounded feet and a deep well in the center of the back complete the form. Size: 10.2" L x 3.55" W x 5" H (25.9 cm x 9 cm x 12.7 cm)Although the Chorrera culture is not well known, researchers believe that this item and ones like it served as mortars for grinding the ingredients of hallucinogenic drugs that would be used by shamans to enter a religious trance. However, this example - and some others we know of - does not have scratch marks inside the mortar, suggesting that it was not used for its intended purpose, but was instead made to be placed into a tomb, perhaps used once to place an offering of hallucinogens beside the deceased. The form of the jaguar throughout the pre-Columbian New World speaks to the transformation of the shaman into a half-human, half-animal spiritual creature. See a similar example at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, USA. Provenance: Ex-James Klein Auction Condition: Slight wear to surface. #119390

Lot 233

Western Europe, probably France, ca. 16th century CE. A beautiful small casket, an obviously treasured personal item. It is made of bronze, with a design of panels showing two figures in various scenes. Size: 2.35" L x 5.05" W x 2.05" H (6 cm x 12.8 cm x 5.2 cm)A wide panel where the latch connects on the front of the casket shows both figures kneeling; based on clothing, they may be a man and woman and possibly a married couple. The lid shows four panels, all taking place underneath an ornate architectural arch of the Gothic style with a low-relief fleur-de-lis at its capstone. Gilt bronze caskets - made of individual cast plaquettes - often had scenes from woodcuts that told stories - some Biblical, some from classical mythology, some from history. See the Victoria & Albert Museum for similar examples. Provenance: Ex-M. Jones private Collection, United Kingdom. Condition: Wear to design; one end appears to have been kept too close to something warm and it has damaged the artwork. Patina overall. #119180

A group of cut and polished agate geodes, one purple and one dark blue with honeycomb crystals, and one banded green, colour enhanced. 1.54 kg total, 11.2-12.8cm (4 1/2 - 5"). From the historic ‘Victorian Museum’ and later collection of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd (Gregory's); formerly Gregory, Bottley & Co. (1932-1981) and previously J. R. Gregory & Co. (1898-1932); originally James Reynolds Gregory (1858-1898"). This item is part of the collection of fossils and minerals which has recently been reviewed by leading geological expert Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. The firm Gregory, Bottley and Lloyd (Gregory's), was acquired by TimeLine Auctions in 2016. London-born James Reynolds Gregory (1832-1899) founded the company, which is the second longest-running gem and fossil dealership in the world. James was educated at Archbishop Tennison's School, and afterward found employment in a jewellery company on Regent Street. In 1858 he established his own business in King William Street. A few years later he moved to ‘very extensive premises’ in Golden Square, Covent Garden. He was one of the best known dealers in London, exhibiting at major commercial shows throughout the world and winning awards for excellence in Paris in 1867, Sydney in 1879 and London in 1862, 1883 and 1884. James primarily bought his stock at auction, from collectors and other dealers, and supplied many major collectors and scientists of his day. He built superb personal collections, a selection going to the British Museum. He wrote many papers and was a member of several learned societies including the Society of Arts. The business became known as J.R. Gregory & Company in 1896, still under James' management with the assistance of his son Albert Gregory (b.1864"). When James died three years later, the business passed to Albert. At the end of the 19th century most London dealers had folded or retired, many selling out to J.R. Gregory & Co. Albert continued by acquiring Russell and Shaw (Est. 1848) in 1925 and Francis H. Butler (Est. 1884) in 1927. Percy Bottley (1904-1980) took over the company in 1931, renaming it Gregory, Bottley & Company with respect to his predecessors. Percy’s company survived the 2nd World War by buying out all of its competitors, including the supplier to Pitt-Rivers, Samuel Henson (Est. 1840) and G.H. Richards (Est. 1897) in 1936. Percy also added many important collections to his stock including those of Rev. F. Holmes in 1940, and the Graves collection in 1943. Following Percy's death in 1981, the business was sold to Brian Lloyd, whereupon it became Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd. Brian had been Sotheby’s main Natural History expert in the 1960s and 1970s, and subsequently traded from Pall Mall. The business continued to thrive, and Brian purchased the Joseph Neeld (1789-1856) collection in 1974 and the historic gold collection of H.S. Gordon, first exhibited at the Empire Exhibition, South Africa in 1936. Brian moved the business to 12-13 Rickett Street in 1982, and to 13 Seagrave Road in 1993. He carried on the company's specialization in historic collections, most recently acquiring that of Robert Ferguson (1767-1840) in 2000. The business moved to Walmer in Kent in 2008, and was acquired by TimeLine in April 2016. Trading History Est. 1858 (59 Frith Street, Soho) 1859 - 1861 (3 King William Street, Strand) 1862 - 1866 (25 Golden Square, Covent Garden) 1866 - 1874 (15 Russell Street, Covent Garden) 1874 - 1895 (88 Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square) 1896 - 1906 (1 Kelso Place, Kensington) 1907 - 1926 (139 Fulham Road, Chelsea) 1926 - 1981 (30 (Old) Church Street, Chelsea) 1982 - 1993 (12-13 Rickett Street, Fulham) 1993 - 2007 (13 Seagrave Road, Fulham) 2008 - 2016 (59 Liverpool Road, Walmer, Kent) 2016 - (363 Main Road, Harwich, Essex) [3, No Reserve].
