LONDON The 30 1/2in. curved blade inscribed KINGS HUSSARS beneath a crown and with maker's inscription, ivory grip, bullion knot and with a gilt-metal mounted shagreen scabbard 92cm in length overallCf. John Wilkinson-Latham, British cut and Thrust Weapons (1971), p. 18, pl. 16 for a similar levee scimitar and a discussion on this type of sword, also from the 15th Hussars.Note: The King's Hussars were raised in 1759 by George Augustus Elliot as a regiment of Light Dragoons and number 15th in 1760. After 1805 Light Dragoon regiments were designated Hussars. The regiment gave sterling service through two centuries, notably the Peninsular Campaign and has one VC, issued to Charles Ernest Garforth in the First World War. Of notoriety, the regiment supported the local militia in the Manchester District at the Peterloo Massacre in 1819. In 1922 they were amalgamated with the 19th Hussars to form the 15th/19th Hussars, surviving in this form until 1992 and are now part of the Light Dragoons.
