Lot 536

A pair of early 20th century German metalwares silver plated candlesticks, circa 1900, marked WMFN for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, in the Neoclassical style, each filled square concave base decorated with swags, bows and ribbons over a textured ground, Corinthian column and acanthus capital, 12 x 12cm, 31cm highThe initials 'WMFN' have been struck in italics and are accompanied by the 'Antler' mark, used around 1900. This extra mark was developed from the Wurtemburg Coat of Arms, but its meaning is not clear. It may be in commemoration of WMF's 20-year jubilee, or simply in celebration of a new century. The letter 'N' following 'WMF' represents the German word 'Neusilber', or nickel silver, the base metal material used to make the item before being silver plated. The 1/0 mark relates to the thickness of the silver plating. These series of marks are rare on WMF-made items.

Omega - A steel 'Constellation Electroquartz Pupitre' wristwatch, circa 1970, model 196-005 (BETA-21), serial number 31732360, tapering rectangular blue dial with silver coloured batons and hands, centre sweep and date window at 6H, signed 13 jewel quartz movement calibre 1300 CEH-B21, with 'crown to the left', case, 37-35mm wide, to a steel tapering link bracelet with fold over clasp, presented in the original case with instruction booklet and guarantee paperwork dated 4/4/1975 The Omega Electroquartz was one of Switzerland’s very first mass-produced quartz watches. The Beta 21 movement was the result of a collaboration of 20 Swiss watch companies including Patek Philippe, Rolex and IWC and was accurate to 5 seconds per month, better than any automatic or manual wind movement of the day.It was developed at the CEH (Centre Electronique Horloger) research laboratory in Neuchâtel, and the first production models went on sale shortly after the introduction of the world's first commercial quartz wristwatch, produced by Seiko in 1969. The Beta 21 is significantly important to the history of watch making, as it marked the first quartz watch produced on an industrial level. With the other collaborative companies also producing their own version of the Beta 21, Omega's offering - this example - was named the Electroquartz. The rectangular case design was larger at the top than the bottom and so it gained the nickname 'pupitre' after the French word for writing desk. It is now a highly collectable item.

Omega - A steel 'Chronostop Driver Edition' flyback chronograph wristwatch, circa 1967, model 145.010, serial number 25869211, circular grey '12 o'clock at 3 o'clock' dial, with silvered batons, white hands and centre orange chronograph sweep, signed 17 jewel mechanical crown wind movement calibre 865, with crown at 1H and start/stop/reset pusher at 11H, case, 35mm diameter, to a black strap with pin buckle Omega first released the Chronostop in 1966, and it was well regarded within the watch industry - it won the 1967 Honour Prize for “Chronographs and Sport Watches”, sponsored by the Swiss Watchmaking Federation, and also took the first prize for Industrial Aesthetics at the Utrecht Spring Fair in 1968.It was selected as the official Omega timer at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg and the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.Unlike conventional chronographs that record seconds, minutes, and hours with two or three subdials, the Chronostop was designed to be used for short interval timing - less than one minute - with a sweep hand for seconds and a single pusher. Pressing the pusher starts the timing hand, pressing again and holding stops the hand, and releasing will return the hand to the 12 o’clock position. The 145.010 is the most sought after of the 'Chronostop' series and was designed specifically for rally drivers. The dial has been moved through 90 degrees and the watch is worn under the wrist, allowing the driver to glance down at the time without having to remove the hands from the steering wheel. It was a unique attempt by Omega to completely change how a wristwatch was worn, and is now a rare and collectable item. Crystal - Complete. Minor scratches and one or two nicks all over, as to be expected and commensurate with age and use. Ω logo to the centreDial - Some spotting to the dial and the batons, visible under magnification. Some spotting and minor deterioration to the hands.Movement - Not currently fully operational. Ticks for one or two seconds, then stops.Case - Minor scratches and one or two nicks all over, as to be expected and commensurate with age and use.
