California ([Lot of 4 - California Oil]), ca. 1894-1907. x ”. This lot focuses on California oil near the turn of the 20th century and includes 1 stock promotional item and 3 books: A. Map of Kern River Oil District, by Standard Consolidated Oil and Land Co., circa 1901, black & white, (7.8 x 10.2"). This promotional map offers stock for sale at a "nominal figure" and promises "immense fortunes" in the Kern River District. According to newspaper reports of the time, it appears that the company didn`t have title to the properties advertised but sold substantial amounts of stock before the perpetrators of the scam disappeared. Condition: Issued folding with a few tiny splits at fold intersections and light toning. (B+) B. The Gas and Petroleum Yielding Formations of the Central Valley of California, by W. L. Watts, published 1894, black & white (6" x 9.3"). 100 pp. with 4 small folding maps and 5 plates. Condition: (A) C. The Santa Clara Valley, Puente Hills and Los Angeles Oil Districts Southern California, by George Homans Eldridge & Ralph Arnold, published 1907, printed color (5.5" x 9). 266 pp. with 41plates and maps including the large Geologic Map of the Santa Clara Valley and Adjacent Oil Fields, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, California (47.5 x 12.2"). Rhondda & Swansea Bay Railway wooden Leaflet/Ticket Box with a rear mounted, brass handle bearing fully titled company garter. The box measures 12½" 6½" x 3¾" and when opened via the two rear hinges, it reveals three compartments numbered 2,3 & 4 in large, gold with black shadow numbers. A superb item not seen by us previously.
Wills`s Capstan Navy Cut Cigarettes wooden Vending Machine manufactured by Clement Garrett Co., Ltd., Sheffield. A wonderful, early machine standing 23¼" tall, 8½" wide and 7½" deep. The lettering is gold with black shadow and asks for 1/- IN SLOT. Complete with original key, the whole item looks to be in extremely good condition and the mechanism appears to work fine.
GWR `black leaf` Fruit Bowl manufactured by Bridgwood, England. A quite wonderful item, not seen by us before, it measure 9¾" diameter across the top, 6¼" diameter across the base and stands 5¼" tall. The company `twin shield - Great Western Railway Hotels` crest appears on the outside and inside. The makers name, along with the anchor trade mark, is clearly visible beneath. Wonderful condition with age crazing. Note: The pottery was at Longton and later became Anchor Pottery.
London & North Western brass Oil Can exquisitely engraved into the top `LNWR Dynamo Rooms Saw Mills`. The body is 3½" tall and the spout 7" in length. The handle has a chain attached to the filler cap. In all, a most scarce item that almost certainly originated from the LNWR Carriage Works Wolverton.
Volvo Lorry Mascot in the form of a Viking with attached Shield. Totally original measuring approximately 19" high. Retains the bottom mounting bracket and electrical connection beneath to light up once affixed to a lorry. Plenty of traces of original paint, this is a scarce item probably fitted to a Volvo F10 lorry.
Brass Locomotive Whistle ex West Donegal Railway Class 1 locomotive, believed to be from No 3 LYDIA. A wonderful item measuring just over 13" in length and having a barrel diameter of 1½". A very rare whistle indeed. The original 1960 receipt accompanies, made out to Patrick Mallon for the princely sum of £1.
Signal Box `mimic` diagram from Neath & Brecon Junction Signal Box. The item probably dates from the 1960`s when the layout around Neath Riverside was rationalised. It measures 12" x 5" and is wooden construction with ivorine overlay. It shows the line from Glyn Neath and also Onllwyn to the left and the line to Jersey Marine to the right. A couple of original pegs remain, these were used to show the location of the many trains that would have been working at a given time in the vicinity. Not seen the likes before so quite a scarcity. Original Boxed Factory Engraved Remington Rider Double Action Percussion Pocket Revolver,.31 cal., 3" octagonal barrel, S/N 443. Etched cylinder, Engraved frame, German silver triggerguard. Two-piece checkered gutta percha grips. Original partitioned cardboard box, flask, mold, loader. Condition: Barrel retains 95% of the bright original blue finish. Frame retains 60% of the original bright blue finish with the rest thinning and turning plum. Cylinder still retains most of the original blue finish. Hammer retains most of the case coloring.
