Full title: Frits Vandenbussche (1942): Four partly glazed stoneware boxes and covers and a bowl, 20th C.Description: H 12 - 5 cm (the tallest and the smallest item)Ê Ê"Frits Vandenbussche (1942, Veurne) is a seperate case. His training as an industrial designer and his apprenticeship in ceramics in Japan have led him to face the problems of the handle and the spout of the teapot, which he reverses. He first looks for a special branch and remodels it into a handle for which he then designs a teapot. In this way, he makes handy, ergonomically well-thought out utensils: they are a naturally curved extension to the arm. The wooden handle and stoneware teapot form at the same time a self-willed sculpture, which cannot really be classified in a category with other work." (J. Walgrave, Ceramique contemporaine en Belgique - Contemporary ceramics in Belgium - Hedendaagse keramiek in Belgie, Liege, 1992)Condition:The absence of a condition report does not imply that a lot is in perfect condition. ITHELL COLQUHOUN (1906-1988)Landscape of nightmare signed, titled and dated 'ITHELL/COLQUHOUN/LANDSCAPE/OF/NIGHTMARE/1945' (on the reverse)oil on panel22.2 x 29.2cm (8 3/4 x 11 1/2in).Painted in 1945Footnotes:ProvenanceThe artist's collection.Private collection, UK (acquired from the above in the late 1970s).ExhibitedLondon, Mayor Gallery, Exhibition of Paintings by Ithell Colquhoun, 5 - 29 March 1947, no. 9.Cambridge, Heffer Gallery, Ithell Colquhoun. Paintings and Drawings 1942-1953, 20 April – 9 May 1953, no. 7.Colchester, The Minories, A Salute to British Surrealism 1930-1950, 6 April - 5 May 1985, no. 23 (later travelled to London and Hull).Colquhoun's paintings (and writings) often feature portals that connect the surface of the earth with other regions. Sometimes the portals are naturalistic, taking the form of caves or holy wells, and sometimes, as here, the portal is imaginative. Generally, they are benign, allowing positive earth energies to break the surface but rarely, as in Landscape of nightmare, the portal is menacing: it is difficult to imagine that any of the powers or forces that will use this gateway have a benevolent reason for passing through. According to a statement by the artist quoted in the Evening Standard, 22nd March 1947, the painting was induced by a stay at a haunted inn in Wales. The painting combines a highly traditional oil painting technique with the surrealist automatism of decalcomania. The contrast between the techniques, the flat colours of the mountains and the ribbed and furrowed central feature is particularly striking. It is an apparent incongruity that whilst Colquhoun was at the height of her engagement with spontaneous, thought-free and automatic methods of painting, she was also practicing and writing about the traditional and time-consuming methods of painting in oils. Thus, in 1949 she published what is still the longest and most detailed account of surrealist automatisms in the English language ('The Mantic Stain', Enquiry, Vol. 2, No. 4, pp. 15-21). This followed a series of instructional articles on buon fresco and painting on panels. In one of these, ('Preparation of Gesso Panels for Decorative Painting', The Illustrated Carpenter and Builder, September 7, 1945, pp. 986-90), she remarked 'I have frequently sawn up disused cupboards or tables and utilized the resulting panels with success.' Landscape of nightmare, painted on a piece of wood repurposed from an old item of furniture is one such work.A number of preparatory drawings and the cartoon are in the Tate Archive. We are grateful to Dr Richard Shillitoe for his assistance in cataloguing the present work. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A GEORGE II SILVER BALUSTER BEER JUG THOMAS FARREN, LONDON 1742 With a leaf-capped S-scroll handle, a spout resting on scrolls, on a short moulded circular foot, engraved with an armorial 20.5cm (8in) high 920g (29.55 oz)Provenance: sale Sotheby's 6th March 1997, lot 187 (£4600 hammer). The arms are immediately identified as belonging to the CAMPBELL family. The quarterings suggest that the arms are likely to be associated with the Duke of Argyll or one of their many cadet branches that include the CAMPBELL family, Baronets of Carrickboy in Ireland. At the time of assay (1742), John CAMPBELL (1680-1743) was 2nd Duke of Argyll and he married firstly Mary BROWN (died 1717) and secondly Jane WARBURTON (died 1767), daughter of Thomas WARBURTON and Anne WILLIAMS, sister of WARBURTON and maid of honour to Queen Anne; Jane was buried with the 2nd Duke in Westminster Abbey. I suspect that Jane CAMPBELL née WARBURTON was the owner of your item, which came in to use after the death of the 2nd Duke. The engraving being correctly applied during her dowry but without acknowledging her paternal arms. The 2nd Duke had issue: three daughters but no sons and was succeeded by his younger brother Archibald CAMPBELL (1682-1761) 3rd Duke. There is also the possibility that the jug was intended for the use of the 2nd Duke and his wife Anne WHITFIELD. The 2nd Duke lived and died in London and despite having no legitimate heir had a number of illegitimate children with his mistress Ann (née SHIREBURN) WILLIAMS.Condition Report: Sits well, marks clear, no dents or other issues. engraving crispCondition Report Disclaimer
