Lot 196

λ A PERUVIAN POLYCHROME FEATHERWORK TABARD FRAGMENT WITH ANIMAL MOTIFS Chimú or Inca Peru, South America, circa 14th - 16th centuryThe rectangular fragment most probably once part of a larger Peruvian tribal tabard garment, made of polychrome bird feathers tied into knots and then knotted directly onto an off-white coarse cotton ground, the feathers prominently in the tones of orange red, light yellow, iridescent teal blue, and brown, the upper section featuring two rows of stylised animals with claws and big fangs, the lower section monochrome, mounted on a cream-coloured cotton canvas in a Perspex casing. The panel 77cm x 43.5cm, 99.5cm x 64.3cm including the frame Provenance: Gifted from the Peruvian Ambassador to the parents of the present vendor in 1968 and in a private UK-based collection since. Exhibited and Published: Juan de Lara, Mestizaje and Craftsmanship in the Viceroyalties of America, Series 'Sumando Historias' of the Museo de America of Madrid, 4 April 2024. The fascination for exotic birds' feathers and their incorporation into artworks, whether in the form of textile panels, totems, adornments, or headdresses, are certainly not only prerogatives of South American civilisations. That said, in the specific case of Peru, featherwork certainly reached an unparalleled high level of complexity and impressive quality during the Chimú (ca. 1000 – 1470) and Inca (1430–1534) periods, as attested by the intricate string system with which the feathers were attached to the tabards. This technique was so elaborate and time-consuming that it is occasionally referred to as 'feather mosaic' (Christine Giuntini in Heidi King, Peruvian Featherworks: Art of the Precolumbian Era, MET, 2012, p. 94). Throughout the 16th century, Spanish and European conquistadors and explorers of the Americas wrote with admiration of the exotic objects they saw on their travels, among them not only clothing and textiles, but also weapons and objects often made of or embellished with rare and precious feathers of birds (Heidi King, Peruvian Featherworks: Art of the Precolumbian Era, MET, 2012, p. 9). Considered symbols of high status, they soon became prized ethnographic possessions, and later entered many important international museum collections. In terms of comparables, our tabard panel presents compositional and manufacturing similarities to another fragmentary panel attributed to Chancay or Ichma Peru, dating 13th - 15th century, in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Ethnologisches Museum (acc. No. VA 660300) (ibidem, p. 33, fig. 21) and another Chimú panel with birds and wave motif, 13th - 15th century, in the Museo Amano, Lima (inv. 7512) (ibidem, p. 118). As far as the decoration goes, birds or animals mixed with running scroll or wave motif were seen on many tabards of the 13th - early 16th-century period, as well as in a variety of other mediums ncluding architecture, ceramics, metalwork. The later dating pieces tend to showcase more abstract and stylised creatures, like the present lot, making species identification difficult. λ This item may require Export or CITES licences in order to leave the UK. λ A PORTABLE TUAREG LEATHER CASE WITH SMOKING ACCESSORIES Northern Mali, Africa, first half 20th centuryOf flattened, elongated bulbous shape, with four rounded flaps decreasing in size, and nine applied circular pom-poms made of leather strips on the outer flap, each rounded flap and side of the leather case tooled, dyed and painted in a palette of burgundy and bright reds, ochre yellow, maroon, and green, typical of African Tuareg leather works, bearing geometric and spiral motifs, as well as eight-pointed stars and stylised crosses, the innermost compartment holding smoking accessories including a tall, tapering, conical mouthpiece with a silver and copper-inlaid brass head and concentric polychrome woods and bone circles on the body, and a plain steel cleaning needle, at the bottom a braided leather string with leather strip pom-pom to be able to tie the case on the wearer's sash or belt.7.5cm x 20cm Tuareg leather works, usually in the form of travel accessories and a male prerogative, are renowned for their practical and functional shapes, bright earthly colours, intricate tooling, and dense, stylised geometric motifs. Some of the designs visible on this pouch can also be seen on two other Tuareg leather creations dating to the first half of the 20th century, namely a travel bag (arreg) and a horse riding bag (techchekouat) (L. Balout, Collections Ethnographiques: Musée d'Ethnographie et de Préhistoire du Bardo, 1959, pp. 20 - 21). The presence of several flaps on the present example makes it a rare specimen, considering that most leather cases tend to have two or less flaps. It must have been a prized possession, possibly belonging to a Tuareg chief. A comparable five-flap tobacco leather case is published in Wolfgang Creyaufmüller, Nomadenkultur in der Westsahara: die materielle Kultur der Mauren, ihre handwerklichen Techniken und ornamentalen Grundstrukturen, 1983, p. 266, no. 181. λ This item may require Export or CITES licences in order to leave the UK. Lot 123

Registration No: PAS 656 Chassis No: 1006930 MOT: ExemptConverted to Right Hand Drive specification upon import to the UK in 2003Subject to a complete cosmetic overhaul while in the vendor's possessionUpgraded with suspension dampeners for the front end“The most intelligent application of minimalism ever to succeed as a car” - LJK Setright on the Citroen 2CVThe development of Citroën's ever-charming Deux Chevaux dates back to 1936 - a couple of years after the company had been rescued by Michelin. It was intended to motorise the large number of French farmers still relying on horses and carts, and it was research carried out amongst France's largely rural population that determined the following unique design brief: a low-priced, rugged 'umbrella on four wheels' that would enable four peasants to drive 110lb of farm goods to market at 31mph in clogs and via muddy, unpaved roads; including transporting eggs across a ploughed field without breaking them. Production was delayed by WWII, but began in 1948, following which 3,872,583 2CVs were manufactured via 11 factories across the world (including one in Slough, England) between 1948 and 1990, by which time, the ageing design had been defeated by contemporary legislation.Understood to have been built in 1958, chassis 1006930 was delivered as a home market 2CV and remained in France until imported to the UK in 2003 by the previous owner. The history prior to import is unknown, however upon arrival in the UK it was noted that the car was a particularly solid example and was sold in need of restoration work to the vendor in 2004, now registered in the UK as 'PAS 656'. The vendor, a motor engineer by trade, immediately set about performing a complete body overhaul and interior re-trim into what is understood to be the original colour scheme of Grey over Red fabric seats. At the same time it was elected to convert the car to right hand drive specification, a relatively easy and non-destructive task on the little 2CV, and retain as many of the original parts as possible. The front suspension was also uprated with the addition of dampers as per the later variants of the 2CV which is said to have improved the ride significantly. Now offered for sale without reserve due to lack of use and an imminent house move, this example of the famous French workhorse is said to have 'very good' bodywork and paintwork, and the vendor rates the rest of the vehicle as 'good all-round'. The mighty 425cc twin-cylinder engine fired up eagerly upon our inspection and moved around willingly for the photography session, and the vendor is confident that the car is able to live up to its advertised ability to transport a basket of eggs across a freshly ploughed field. To be sold complete with a history file including old MOTs, plus sundry receipts for various works, this French design icon should be a major bucket list item for any collector of classics. Registration No: D348 UBH Chassis No: 1G1YY6787G5905383 MOT: June 2025Number 5,383 of 7,315 C4's built to Indy 500 pace car specificationSupplied with the original owners handbook displaying 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal's autographImported to the UK in 1992Described as an extraordinarily original car with only 49,989 miles displayed on the odometerArguably the most radical 'Vette in two decades, the fourth generation or C4 model was introduced in March 1983. Built around a C-section beam-reinforced monocoque, it was equipped with composite transverse-leaf independent suspension and rack and pinion steering. Fitted with 16 x 8.5 alloy wheels shod with P255/50VR-16 tyres as standard, the C4's handling drew considerable praise from the contemporary press. Powered by a 350ci/5.7-litre V8 engine mated to either four-speed automatic or manual gearboxes, it was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in under six seconds and over 140mph. Boasting new aluminium callipers, its four-wheel disc braking system proved more efficient than ever. Noticeably lower-slung than its predecessor, the new car actually possessed greater ground clearance (thanks to a cleverly routed exhaust) and a more spacious interior. In 1986, to celebrate the launch of the new C4 Convertible, Chevrolet supplied 56 Corvettes as pace cars and official vehicles for the Indianapolis 500. Chevrolet saw a great marketing opportunity in making replicas available to the general public. The cars actually used at the track sported Yellow paint, but all 1986 Convertibles were considered Pace Car Replicas. The open-top option added $5,000 to the price of the car, and 7,315 were produced out of the 35,109 total Corvettes sold that year. Supplied in Red, Silver, Black, Gold and Yellow, the C4 Pace Cars were fitted with a commemorative dashboard plaque and were all identical in specification, with brushed alloy wheels and tan leather interior. Our Corvette was delivered in September 1986 to Palm Harbor, Florida, and is said to have been supplied to none other than Bobby Rahal, who won the 1986 Indianapolis 500 Miles race and was the first driver to complete it in under three hours, driving a March 86C. The Corvette was later sold through Florida’s Toy Store dealership, with Mr. Rahal’s signature in the owners handbook, and was imported into Britain in 1988.Besides its provenance, this Corvette represents one of the best-preserved C4s in existence. We understand the paintwork is all factory-applied, and the interior is evidently original and complete with its Indianapolis commemorative plaque. The car has been cherished as a collector’s item from early in its life, having enjoyed single ownership from November 1992 to March 2024, while the MoT record beginning at just over 28,000 miles in 1990 suggests the present mileage of just under 50,000 is genuine. The paint and exterior exhibit only a light patina, concomitant with a well-cared for but unrestored car.The Corvette starts well and runs sweetly, and all of the gauges and switches are to said to function as they should. It is offered with the current V5, a large collection of MoT certificates and the original signed handbook. A MATCHED PAIR OF GILT METAL MOUNTED BLUE JOHN 'GOAT'S HEAD' CANDLE VASES THE FIRST GEORGE III, CIRCA 1775, BY MATTHEW BOULTON, THE SECOND PROBABLY 20TH CENTURY Both with reversible gadrooned nozzles, tapering ovoid bodies hung with laurel swags, the shoulders with goat's heads, on waisted spiral fluted socle bases and square stepped plinths terminating in ball feet 21.5cm high as candlesticks Literature: N. Goodison, Matthew Boulton: Ormolu, London, 2002, p. 333, figs. 332-333.The 'goat's head vase' is derived from a sketch illustrated in Boulton and Fothergill's pattern books preserved in the Birmingham City Archives (Pattern Book 1, p.171). The model was one of the most popular of the smaller vases and first appeared in 1769 when a Mrs Yeats ordered '1 pair of goat's head vauses light blue cheny or enamelled'. In the same year, Sir William Guise ordered a pair with Blue John bodies. Other buyers of goat's head vases include Lord Digby in 1774 and Lord Scarsdale in 1772, who paid £4.4s a pair. Some examples feature 'antique' medallions depicting the head of Alexander the Great, suspended from the rim of the vase. Condition Report: Generally good and structurally secure. As noted one vase is 18th century with gilt metal of a more yellow colour - old cracks and repairs to the blue john of both with some vacant areas to surface. The second probably 20th century with more `brassy' gilt metal and slightly different proportions to the cradle and socle. Note that there may be some mixing of 18th century and later metal parts. A RARE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE TERRACOTTA TILE WITH THE CYPHER OF FEDERICO DA MONTEFELTRO, DUKE OF URBINO CIRCA 1474/1482 Moulded with San Bernardino rays quartering FE[EDERICO] DUX 33.5cm x 33.5cm Literature: https://www.umbriametu.it/museums/museo-civico-palazzo-dei-consoli-gubbio/focus-on-federico-da-montefeltro-and-gubbio-exhibition/?lang=en emblema di Federico da Montefeltro formella 1474/ 1482  Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino (1422-1482), was a significant humanist figure in the Italian Renaissance. He was instrumental in fostering learning at his court, employing copyists to amass one of the largest libraries outside of the Vatican. His patronage extended to artists such as Piero della Francesca, whose Diptych of Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza remains one of the most iconic portraits of the Renaissance, (housed today in the Uffizi Gallery) This large tablet tile bearing his personal cipher and emblem, possibly designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, is part of a decorative series of more than 275 tiles that adorned the Palazzo Ducale in Gubbio. It is generally understood that these tiles were likely commissioned after Federico's elevation to Duke of Urbino and they served as a public display of his new rank and prestige. The Palazzo passed out of the family line and was purchased by the Balducci family of Gubbio in 1860 with most of the contents dispersed when it subsequently was sold to a silk spinning company in 1870. There are documentary reports from the late 19th/early 20th century deploring the general state of the building, singling out the neglect to the roof. It is possible that it was at this time the tile was detached and sold on. The inscription "FE DUX" and the inclusion of "tongues of fire" have been widely interpreted, with scholarly perspectives providing different readings of their possible meaning. The most likely interpretation connects the flames to the insignia worn by the Accesi, young initiates of the Venetian brotherhood Compagnia della Calza, whom Federico was associated with during his exile in Venice, 1433. This rare tile, whether interpreted as a reference to Venetian affiliations, familial heraldry, or local industry; reflects the complex interplay of personal history, economic interests, and cultural patronage that characterized Federico's rule. His contributions to art, architecture, and humanist scholarship continue to be celebrated, underscoring his enduring impact on the Italian Renaissance. At the time of cataloguing, no examples of this tile seem to have appeared on the art market with 275 still at the Palazzo and three held in the museum of the Palazzo Venezia in Rome.  Condition Report: Darker than main image suggests- extra images give a better indication of colour. Wear and some rubbing to raise detailing- right hand edge with damage around what could have been a pin mounting joint. No traces of original polychrome. Surface dirt- natural firing flaws and edge wear, small chips and losses. Provenance: The estate of the late Philip Astley-Jones. No paperwork or oral history to confirm where he obtained it from or when except statement from his partner, the jeweller Johnnie Lloyd Morgan: ""I don't know where Philip found the Urbino tile but it has been in our house for ever. Certainly since the early '80s when we first met. It never seemed to find a place in the home but I know he was intrigued by it."With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Volpato Roma 28cm high, base 18cm wide There are two Roman forms of these large centaur sculptures. AFTER THE ANTIQUE- A BRONZE MODEL OF THE PERSONIFICATION OF THE RIVER NILE IN THE MANNER OF RIGHETTI, CIRCA 1820-1850 15cm high, base 27cm wide, 13cm deep Provenance: Agnew & Co 2019 Masterpiece Fair This bronze depicting the River Nile is a reduced version of a colossal Roman marble group found in 1513 in Campo Marzio where it was probably part of the decoration of the Iseo Campense. The composition is an allegory of fecundity with a cornucopia placed prominently near the reclining Nile, and the sixteen small children who cavort on and about the figure of the river symbolize the sixteen cubits by which the river rose annually, fertilizing the surrounding areas. The complexity of the composition, due in large part to the incorporation of the children, meant that reproductions in bronze are scarce. A simplified version, without the children, and possibly executed by Carlier and Buviette is held in The Huntington Library, Art Museum, San Marino California. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning.
