An 18/19th century Ottoman dagger with a jade hilt set with precious stones, and a gilt hand-worked scabbard. Blade inscribed with 'hafez' meaning 'guardian'/ 'protector' in Arabic. Materials:Jade, gold, silver, rubies, emeralds (?) and Steel. The hilt is formed of a single block of Jade with absolutely no faults. The colour is not the traditional green, but rather of a light white colour. The pommel is inlaid with a thick and bright layer of gold vines and flowers. These vines are crafted to precision and to house the en suite rubies that form the flower heads. The gold work and red rubies encapsulate royalty and provide a splendid contrast to the light hilt and the present example has profound comparable examples in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession Number: 23.232.1). ...flamboyant gem-studded weapons that were probably made in Istanbul in the waning years of the Ottoman Empire. Their traditional shapes and luxurious materials were intended to evoke romantic notions of the exotic orient, Arabian Nights, or perhaps the sultan's treasury. (The Met Museum, Accession number 23.232.6a, b) At the forte of the serpentine shape blade, there is elegant, and greatly preserved, gold damascened work, with kofgari design and Quranic script. The accompanying scabbard is also very fine with an intricate, handworked chased design with applied gold decorations at either end. Overall, this is a rare type of dagger. It is in very fine condition with a fantastic gem-set and gold embossed Jade hilt. The blade is also immaculate. A rare collectible item. Dimensions: 11 inches (length with scabbard) 7.5 inches (scabbard length)

Central Bank of China, photograph of a de Havilland DH.91 Albatross in flight, with annotations on the reverse “Aeroplane used on 5 Yuan note back”, referring to the 5 Yuan of 1942. Interestingly, the aeroplane in question is a very specific type, of which only seven were ever built, and none of which were ever flown anywhere near China. Other elements of the photo were also adapted to fit the banknote design, with the sheds and hangers engraved at an entirely different angle. Several folds, very fine, a fascinating and strange item for the advanced collector, who might like to consider why the Chinese authorities thought this was an appropriate subject for their notes Pick 244 for type £150-£200
United Kingdom of Great Blessings and Joyland, an entirely hand painted Christmas and New Year card in the likeness of a Treasury £1, dated Christmas 1924, serial number 1925, signature of the artist, Alexine Thorpe, with imagery including a turkey, sausages and a Christmas pudding on the obverse and Father Christmas in a wheeled sled powered, seemingly, by Shell Motor Spirit, on reverse, truly beautiful and a very touching item, very fine and unique £150-£200 --- Alexine Thorpe (born Alexine Sara Tinne Berthon, born 1865) is listed in the 1911 census as a miniature painter and retired concert singer in Selsey, near Chichester, and was clearly an artist of some skill. This meticulously crafted and well imagined Christmas note is both charming and brilliantly executed. She died in 1935. Alexine came from a remarkable family, with her sister, Ellen Margaret Tinne Berthon M.B. (London), being amongst the first women to gain a full medical degree at the Royal Free University in London. She became an assistant physician in Clapham Maternity Hospital at a time when this was unheard of for a woman.
Manchester & Gibralter Bank, for the Governor of the Gibralter Hotel, Pall Mall, a note promising to pay the bearer 2 Pence for winnings at Bagatelle, Manchester, 17 January 1810, serial number 1639, signed by William Murray, with a very nicely printed and ornate vignette of a contemporary steam train in a crowned frame at top left, partially stuck on card, very good, extremely rare and a wonderful item Outing unlisted £240-£300 --- Bagatelle was a very popular 19th century precursor to Bar Billiards, and this note may actually be serious in promising to pay the bearer two pence for winning at it. The reasons for the naming of the note, and the subject matter of the vignette are unclear, but there was once a Gibralter Street in Manchester, and it was right next to the new Victoria Railway station in 1840. There may have been a Hotel on or near the street. Alternatively, it is possible that the Gibralter Hotel may have been on Pall Mall in London, and the ‘winner’ of the note might have had to catch the train to Manchester to cash in his almighty prize of 2 pence. Alternatively, and most likely, the note is simply nonsense, or was some kind of in-joke that we now lack the context to understand.

Richard Snyder (American, born 1951), 'The Cabinet of 3 7/8 Wishes', 1992, mahogany veneered plywood, with accompanying postcard from the artist confirming completion and the title of the work, dated 1992213 x 71 x 70cm Provenance: Purchased directly from the artistFootnote: American designer, Richard Snyder, was one of a group of artists who created furniture for Rick Kaufman’s New York gallery, Art et Industrie. Initiated in the late 1970s by cultural impresarios Kaufman and Tracy Rust, the Art et Industrie collective brought together exceptionally gifted artists, designers, and craftspeople to produce unique, often handmade, items in extremely limited runs. Rather than being purely functional, the pieces executed under the auspices of Kaufman and Rust aimed to create a new language of ‘art furniture’ and to interrogate the boundaries between the disciplines. In a postcard addressed to the current owners of the present lot, Snyder joked that he had titled the piece “The Cabinet of 3 7/8 Wishes”, a deviation from the official title “The Cabinet of 4 Wishes”, as he had to adapt the piece to fit their home. A very similar example of the present lot can be found at The Art Institute of Chicago (item 1990.399).
Malcolm de Chazal (Mauritian 1902-1981) View of the Thien-Thane Pagode, Mauritiussigned 'Chazal' (lower left)gouache, unframed78.5 x 58cmFootnote: Although his works effervesce with the fauvist zeal and naivety of Matisse, Derain and Van Gogh, the paintings of Malcolm de Chazal are unlike those of any other artist. An alchemist of word and image, poet, writer and artist, Malcolm de Chazal was born to a long-established aristocratic land-owning French family in Mauritius in 1902. It was not until 1940, after several years working as an agronomist on sugar plantations and later for the Office of Telecommunications, that Chazal instigated his career as a writer and poet. Best known for his seminal works, Pensées and Sens-Plastique, Chazal’s written works gained widespread critical acclaim, prompting André Breton to hail Chazal as a surrealist and W.H. Auden to dub him ‘the most original and interesting French writer to emerge since the war.’ At the suggestion of Georges Braque, in 1950, Chazal began painting. Utilising bold, volumetric forms and a naive, joyous palette, the present lot is characteristic of Chazal’s larger body of work.Condition report: The item comes with a backboard, but is not glazed. The black passages of paint show a number of scattered white specks, and there yellow stripes at the top show some small, scattered brown accretions, there is some overall surface dirt commensurate with age, but is otherwise clean. There are some places in the yellow stripes and on the white steps to the pagode where some small networks of fine cracks have appeared in the paint layer and there are a few small areas of paint loss, for example at the top of the fifth stripe from the left hand side, on the petal of the yellow flower and on the left hand edge above the signature. Where there is no paint on the surface, the paper shows typical age toning and discolouration. Above the signature, there is a very small tear and some further small nibbles and knocks to the lower edge of the sheet. There is a rip and loss to the lower right hand corner, please see added images. Otherwise, a good image with strong colours.
