JIM MALONE (born 1946); a 'bashed' stoneware bottle, green ash glaze, impressed JM mark, height 22.5cm. Provenance: Purchased from Bolton Museum, 1981. Alex McErlain writes: 'My first encounter with the Firths was at an exhibition at Bolton Museum and Art Gallery. The show featured work by Jim Malone amongst others and I was keen to acquire a particular item that had caught my eye - a 'bashed' bottle. Unfortunately for me Pat was in the queue ahead of me and bought the pot before I had the chance. We often laughed about this competitive first encounter'. A very good Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, manufactured for display on the 40/50HP six cylinder Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost automobile, this being the rarest type, reputedly produced for only six months back in 1911, having various correct period dating features including the hollow under base area & most importantly the words 'Rolls-Royce Limited 6th FEBRUARY 1911' around the base area, as opposed to all later Silver Ghost mascots which read 'Rolls-Royce Ltd FEB 1911'. This rare mascot features the signature of Charles Sykes across the top of the base area and no under-wing markings, which is correct on all pre-World War One examples. A stunning and impressive item of the very finest detail, silver plated finish on bronze base metal, original mounting stud and fittings, mounted to a period display base. The largest, most impressive and rarest of al Rolls-Royce mascots.
A very important piece of motor racing ephemera, this body panel and bonnet badge is believed to have been removed from J.M Fangio`s Mercedes-Benz W196 'Silver Arrow'. It was then signed with a scribe pen and washed over in black ink by the 1955 'Team', including works drivers J.M Fangio and Stirling Moss, along with the team manager Alfred Neubauer, plus several others (and their partners). We believe this item to be the only official memento kept from a dinner that took place in December of 1955, following the withdrawal of the Mercedes-Benz team from all forms of motorsport. An accident at Le Mans a few months earlier, involving a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, resulted in the death of 83 people and injury of 120 others. Framed for display.
