A JAMES II SILVER BOUGIE BOX MAKER'S MARK OBSCURED, CIRCA 1665 With a pull off domed cover, engraved with an armorial 7.5cm (3in) 108g (3.5 oz)Provenance: The executor's of the late Derek StraussThe arms are for the MICKLETHWAITE family of Yorkshire. A family of some standing locally and later nationally, who in the eighteenth century were created first Barons and later Viscounts. Being portrayed in a lozenge the arms are for a lady, usually unmarried but the early date may mean that she was married. The owner of this item is likely to be an immediate descendant of Joseph MICKLETHWAITE (1594-1658) a JP of Swine in Holderness, Yorkshire by his wife Anne LEVETT (1590-1653) widow of Christopher TOPHAM daughter of Percevall LEVETT of York. He had four children who survived to their maturity: A son and heir JOHN MICKLETHWAITE (1628-1660) a barrister of the Inner Temple who married Barbara MIDDLETON (born 1636) daughter of Timothy MIDDLETON of Stansted Mount-Fitchet, Essex and had issue Anne (born 1654) and Joseph (born 1656). At the date of assay Anne would have been a possible owner being eleven years of age. Possibly her mother Barbara, then a widow, could also be a candidate as owner; There were also three daughters: Anne (born 1630) who married Hartington FONTAYNE date unknown but likely to be before 1665, Dorothy (born 1658) who in 1658 married Thomas STILLINGTON and Elizabeth (born 1635) who in 1663 possibly married Nicholas WALSHW. Unfortunately, this leaves two possibilities Barbara and her daughter Anne. Condition Report: The age has been derived from the style of the piece and the engraving, it is also the expert opinion of our silver consultant Ian Pickford. The engraving is crisp, there is some general wear commensurate with age and use, scuffs and scratches to the top where the wick comes through, some small knocks as to be expected. The box is late 17th century, we cannot confirm that the snuffer section to the box lid for the wax is not original, and maybe a later adaptation. Any alterations to this box wouldn't fall within British hallmarking laws as it is not a fully hallmarked piece. Our research has not revealed any suggestions for the makers mark it is impossible to decipher the conjoined initials, it is not in Grimwade or Jacksons. Condition Report Disclaimer
A GEORGE III SILVER SHAPED CIRCULAR SALVER J. E. TERRY & CO., LONDON 1817 With a raised gadrooned and foliate border, chased with floral sprays and C-scrolls, engraved with an armorial and on three shell and scroll bracket feet 31cm (12 1/4in) diameter 1272g (40.9 oz) These are the arms of the BERTIE family Condition Report: Marks are clearStands well, does not wobbleEngraving crisp, no signs of erased engravingCentre is firmDecoration good and contemporary to the piece4cm (1 1/2in) highLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and useThese are the arms of the BERTIE family, Earls of Abingdon. On this occasion the usual indicators that would tell us the owner of the arms are earls are not present (supporters and coronets). Similarly there are no marks cadency indicated in the arms (indicating sons of a noble family). It is suspected as a result this is an item of the household of the BERTIE family, who where of Westbury, Wiltshire. The family were at this time heavily in debt and were selling off their estate at Westbury in order to remain solvent. The holder of the arms at the time of assay (1817) was Montagu BERTIE (1784-1854) 5th Earl of Abingdon, who was the third son of Willoughby BERTIE (1740-1799) 4th Earl of Abingdon by Charlotte WARREN (1744-1794). He married: Firstly in 1807 Emily GAGE (1776-1836) daughter of Thomas GAGE by Margaret KEMBLE. Secondly in 1841 Lady Fredrica Augusta KERR (186-1864). The 5th Earl had only one surviving male sibling in 1817 and this was Hon. Revd. Frederic BERTIE (1793-1868), clearly he was also a candidate for ownership Condition Report Disclaimer
