[Ward, Edward]. The Tipling Philosophers, A Lyrick Poem, to which is subjoin'd a Short Abstract of their Lives and most Memorable Actions, 1st edition, printed and sold by J. Woodward, 1710, 40pp., lightly browned throughout, a few leaves stained to inner margin, front pastedown with book ticket of J.O. Edwards, modern full calf, 8vo ESTC T60813. Edward (Ned) Ward produced numerous satirical and humorous works in both prose and verse, including 'The London Spy'. This item contains fifty eight-line sketches in verse of various classical figures, with facetious fancies on the excessive imbibing of alcohol, each followed by a brief biographical prose note. The work closes with: "But if they would come at the Prize,/They ought to be Jolly, and drink,/For the true Modern Way to be Wise,/Is neither to Read or to Think./The Blockhead must lose his Aim,/That studies Old Aristotle,/For the ways that we rise to Fame,/Are the Petticoat, Dice and Bottle./Thus if you would climb to Pow'r,/And be a True Whig of Trust,/Your way is to Drink and Whore,/And neither be Learn'd or Just." Phillipps (Sir Thomas). Visitatio Heraldica Comitatus Wiltoniae, A.D. 1623..., Typis Medio-Montanis, Excudit Eduinus Offer, 1828, 259 pages plus interleaved pages (making a total of approximately 400), plus the Index in 4 columns with folio numbers entered in ink [per Her. & Gen. II, 293, only 100 copies of the Index were printed in 1831] and the scarce 4 pages of Errata (usually wanting), paper mostly watermarked 1822 or 1825, near contemporary navy half calf gilt, folio Armorial bookplate of Revd. John Ward (1795-1862, historian & sometime vicar of Great Bedwyn), with signed note in the autograph of Canon J.E. Jackson 'purchased at York at the sale of Revd. J. Ward's library, March 19, 1862'. On the front pastedown early catalogue entry item 673 £6.6.0. In addition to the 1623 Visitation, the archive includes 33 large manuscript pedigrees by Ward, many additional pedigrees by Jackson, with loose notes inserted and extensions to pedigrees. They include some 25 in the autograph of Sir Thomas Phillipps (some initialled TP, some dated (1839) and 4 noted by Jackson 'Sir T.P's writing'). The Stourhead 1840 catalogue in relation to the Visitation of Wiltshire 1623 includes 'Another copy is bound with Misc. Collections, printed by Sir Thomas Phillipps', which may be this manuscript and printed archive. In addition there is a 4 page manuscript letter from the historian James Waylen (1810-1894), addressed from Ashalton regarding a list of warrants and a biography of Henry Brouncher M.P. for Devizes, and a 4 page manuscript list of Disclaimers 1623 (with his comments on their later fame or otherwise). Many pedigrees are annotated with dates, ages at time of death, comments (e.g. 'a swindler'), mostly in the autograph of Sir Thomas Phillipps. The blazons of some of the arms entered in manuscript may also be in his hand. An interesting compiliation and collection of Wiltshire pedigrees forming a significant archive by three notable 19th century historians. Fenwick no. 40 lists this work as being 'Extremely Scarce'. The View and Humours of Billingsgate, 1762, uncoloured engraving, some staining, occasional repaired marginal closed tears, 450 x 560 mm, together with Wollett (William),The Fishery, 1768, uncoloured engraving after Richard Wright, some overall toning, 440 x 550 mm, with Le Veau (J.J.),La Pˆche en Eau Douce, published Paris, circa 1780, uncoloured engraving after J.Vernet, some spotting, slight surface abrasion, 440 x 580 mm, together with two others similar relating to fishing The first described item is the frontispiece to a suite of eight engravings called 'The Wonders of the Deep' painted by Van Haecken in the 1730's. The original paintings hang in the Fishmongers Hall in London. (5)
*Kennedy (Jacqueline Bouvier, 1929-1994). President John F. Kennedy and children John Junior and Caroline, circa 1962, original gouache painting heightened with silver and gold pen, showing the President and children in Indian dress with turbans, J.F. Kennedy at the front dragging a dead tiger by its tail, the children on white and black horses following on behind, painted on a silver ground on blue card, 14 x 26 cm, mounted on plain card, framed and glazed Provenance: The family of Maud Shaw, the White House nanny to the Kennedys, and by family descent. It is understood to have been painted by Jackie Kennedy after her visit as First Lady to India and Pakistan with her sister Lee in March 1962. Maud Shaw used to explain it as a metaphor of John F. Kennedy bringing home the family bacon. A watercolour by Jackie Kennedy titled 'The White House Long Ago' painted at a similar time, and showing similar artistic style, was given to her husband as a gift. The President chose to hang this painting in his Oval Office at the White House, and now is held in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum at Columbia Point, Boston. Jackie Kennedy also painted watercolours to be used as original designs for Christmas cards in 1963 which were used commercially by Hallmark, the originals now held by the Smithsonian Institution.
