A QUEEN ANNE SILVER TAZZA RICHARD GREEN, LONDON 1707 Engraved with an armorial to the centre, H over WE beneath and on a circular moulded spreading pedestal foot 23cm (9in) diameter 562g (18.1 oz) These are the arms of the Ramsden family, who at the time of grant (1575) were of Longley, Yorkshire. The family were created in 1689 Baronets of Byram, Yorkshire. The date of assay (1707) appears to indicate that the person who commissioned this item was Sir William RAMSDEN (1672-1736) 2nd Baronet, a famous pioneering horse breeder of Byram. He was the son and heir of Sir John RAMSDEN (1648-1690) 1st Baronet by Sarah BUTLER (1649-1684) of Gainsborough Lincolnshire. Burke's General Armory records the arms as of the RAMSDEN family of Carlton Hall, Carlton in Lindrick, Nottinghamshire. Notably the second son of the 2nd Baronet purchased the Carlton Hall in 1774 and his descendants resided there until the 20th century. That second son was Robert RAMSDEN (1708-1789) born at Byram who died at Carlton Hall. The lack of a cadency mark displayed with these arms suggests that although this item may have later been in the ownership of Robert RAMSDEN (2nd son) it was intended for the use of Sir William RAMSDEN 2nd Baronet and the above record is incorrect.
