A 1974 Land Rover Series III military lightweight 1/2 ton utility truck, registration number HHO 198S, chassis number 95102896A, engine number 95107825A, green. The lightweight or Airportable as it was known was employed by the armed forces, as the name would imply, because it was capable of being airlifted by both helicopter and cargo aircraft. The modifications to the bodywork and chassis enabled the Land Rover to be packed onto a pallet for transportation. This petrol engined lightweight was decommissioned from the army in 1978 and was registered for civilian use. Having been recently sympathetically restored by a garage proprietor?s son, work included the canvas tilt being renewed with a correct military specification item, the bodywork repainted and the wheels replaced with oversized steel aftermarket items fitted with BP Goodrich tyres. This relatively rare version of the classic Series Land Rover will be offered for sale with a history file containing copies of the military paperwork, receipts and some previous MOTs. V5C, MOT and tax exempt See illustration. All lots in this sale are sold as is and bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Battledores. My New Battledore, Kettering: Joseph Toller, circa 1830s, single sheet of stiffened paper, folded to form two leaves with a flap, internally with three engravings, alphabets, and two lessons (some marks to one alphabet and inside front flap), exterior grey-brown with three engravings, imprint on flap, 13 x 8cm when folded, together with The New Royal Battledore, Kettering: Joseph Toller, circa 1840, single sheet of stiffened paper, folded to form two leaves with a flap, with three engravings, alphabets, numbers, and two lessons, exterior grey-brown,with woodcut of a zebra and imprint on flap, remainder of exterior with more letters, syllables and short words, 13 x 8.5cm when folded (Qty: 2)The battledore was a more portable and less expensive version of the hornbook, and its ephemeral nature means that copies rarely survive in good condition. Each battledore often varied in its engravings. The first item here has internally: a lady kneeling to pray; people waving at a passing royal coach travelling from Paris to Rome (the coach driver and passengers being royally-dressed donkeys); and a stage actor. Externally the engravings comprise: a basket-weaver (on the flap); a horse rider approaching a cabin; and visitors with candles in a catacombs passageway lined with skulls, possibly on a tour.

Unusually, this copy is complete with all the original ivory finials, and all the voices working, with the item in very good condition having not suffered a reback as is often the case. Haining calls this 'the pièce de résistance of any collection of moveables' and adds that very few complete and fine copies have 'survived youthful hands.' (Haining, Moveable Books, pp.136/7)

An 18-carat yellow-gold wedding band modelled as alternating inverted hearts, ring size 'Q' (approx. 5.67g)Overall very good condition with no major problems noted. The item has come privately and has only been consigned because the vendor has arthritis of the fingers. The ring is fully hallmarked to the inside as expected and is also lightly engraved EX 222. Very nice ring overall with no problems.
A 19th century Minton Majolica lidded pottery jug; the hinged scallop-shell-shaped cover surmounted with a finial of a jester's head and above a main body decorated in relief with scenes of revelry and dancing within ivy branch borders, the handle also as an ivy branch, Minton and various other impressed marks to underside (32cm high) Sadly this has a 17cm crack across the hinged cover before the pointed spout section. There appears to be a small broken section away at the back of the Jesters collar where the porcelain is approx. 3 or 4mm away from the thumbpiece. Apart from this the item appears in fairly good overall condition although there is some discolouration to the inside where the jug has had liquids. Apart from this it appears overall in good original order.
A mid-18th century mahogany (possibly Cuban?) writing bureau of good colour and small proportions, the cleated fall opening to reveal pigeonholes above a bank of seven smaller drawers and further over two half-width and two full-width graduated drawers, raised on bracket feet (84cm wide x 99cm high) This appears to be in fairly good original overall order. It has come from a private vendor, there are the usual water marks, ink marks, some scratches and scuffs etc., commensurate with age. The fall is damaged to the left and right hand sides mostly to the top on the left and going down further to about 8/9cm on the right hand side where the lot number is on the cleating. The hinges appear to be in good order, there is a fillet which if not original has been on there a very long time at the very front of the interior where the hinges go into. Otherwise there does not appear to be any real breakages or signs of restoration etc. The interior is quite plain with three drawer sized spaces to the top above an arrangement of one larger and six further smaller drawers. The piece is oak lined with drawer bottoms running from front to back and the tops of the drawer linings are slightly rounded as expected for early case furniture. The handles have obviously been changed at some stage. The item is very heavy and a nice even colour overall except for the dark areas where the handles have been changed and the bracket feet look a little darker also. The two lopers appear to function as intended.
A hallmarked silver Argyle-style hot-water jug domed lobed cover surmounted with an acorn-style finial above circular body with lobed lower section, raised on spreading circular foot with fluted base, makers' mark RE EB, assayed London 1808 (total weigh approx. 407g) Generally very good with no major problems noted. The item has been entered privately and is very heavy in the hand. Some minor tarnishing and discolouration and probably needs a good clean. Otherwise in good general honest original condition.
