A Very Fine Swiss Hipp Chronoscope,C.1925, Swiss, signed 'Favarger & Co S A Neuchatel-Suisse, 23475', spring driven movement with electric escapement mounted on oak platform, with brass terminals, with two silvered dials to the front of 100 divisions each, one recording seconds and 1/10ths, the other 1/100ths and 1/1000ths, contained within original polished wood case, with key, original receipts and instructions, case height 24cm Footnotes: The Hipp Chronoscope was devised in the early 1840s by Matthias Hipp (1813-95). It was used for the determination of small measurements of time. The Hipp Chronoscope was often used in laboratories for experiments in psychology where the measurements of rapid reactions were required. They were also used in observatories for astronomical measurements. This particular instrument was bought in 1925 and used by the vendors father who was a Favarger & Co specialised in the production of the Hipp chronoscope and other electromechanical equipment including telegraph equipment. The Berlin Missionary Society: 1849 November 19, entire written by Carl Friedrich Julius Schultheiss, headed 'Itemba, 19th Nov 1849', addressed initially to Cape Town, then readdressed to 'Rev'd C Blech, Mission Seminary, Sebastian Strasse, Berlin, with various m/script rate markings, reverse bears boxed "AMERICA per ENGLAND', in black, "INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH' in blue and London transit cds for 1 FE 50 in red, although headed 'Itemba' this mission was burnt down during the 1847-49 'War of the Axe' and Schultheiss was probably based at Bethany at the time of writing, accompanied by an English translation of the contents, a rare and fascinating early missionary item (Plate )
