HISTORICALLY INTERESTING 1914 XMAS TRUCE ACCOUNT, LETTERS, PHOTOS & ACCOUNT OF WAR EXPERIENCES OF SECOND LIEUTENANT HUGH C.BARKER LONDON RIFLE BRIGADE & MACHINE GUN CORPS, this important collection including handwritten account of his war experiences dated October 1915. Also substantial collection of letters from the Western Front from late 1914, through 1915 and with others from 1916 & 1917. It is believed Hugh was transferred to Egypt and Palestine until the end of hostilities. The account provides considerable detail particularly of this early time at the front. After training at Crowborough he arrived on the Western front in November 1914 and was sent straight to the front line at Ploegsteert Wood. He describes in detail nights in the trenches, stand to, shelling and sheer random nature of casualties. Of major historical interest is his full page hand written account of the so called “X-Mas Truce” of 1914, he states that he experiences the carols and banter across the lines on Christmas (X-MAS) eve. He returned to billets and when he comes back to the trenches around 11 am both German and British are strolling around No Mans Land. He describes exchanging cigarettes for cigars from the enemy soldiers and German bodies are collected for burial. He states that the troops involved are Saxons who don’t want to fight their English Friends. First hand written accounts of the Christmas truce of 1914 are very rare and make this collection an outstanding item of historical interest. In addition to the account, the sheer numbers of letters, photographs and other ephemera tell the story of one officers war and his involvement in one of the most notorious acts of humanity seen in one of the bloodiest and inhumane conflicts of the 20th century.
