GB Lord Russell hand signed envelope with 1837 FREE postmark sent to Lady Lockwood at Tunbridge Wells (she was sued for desertion by her husband at about this time). As a politician (City of London MP, and later Prime Minister) Russell was allowed to use 'Freepost' and it was necessary to hand sign the envelope. Red wax elaborate seal to reverse, small tear at top, rear flap missing, but interesting historical item.

A box containing various clothing to include men's suits, bridesmaid dresses, evening dress, etc, together with a black and gold machine embroidered fabric top CONDITION REPORTS The peach coloured bridesmaids dresses bear Berkertex labels, they are in used and worn condition with stains and dirt. All other items in used and worn condition with some dirt and stains, some fraying. The shirt style lightweight long jacket bears "Windsmoor" label and the navy blue dress with sequin detail bears "Debut" label. The green and the black floral tops appear to be home made. Please note that the black and gold item is not an Oriental jacket - it is a machine embroidered fabric top.
A pair of Minton's porcelain candlesticks in the form of a putti upon a column, a cast metal fountain head in the form of a dolphin, a shredded clay decorated Highland bull, a shredded clay decorated ram, a slipware decorated jug inscibed "G Lloyd 2000" to base, a large stoneware harvest jug and another similar smaller, together with a swan shaped flower holder CONDITION REPORTS Candlesticks with some wear and scuffs. These appear to be 20th Century. Various firing blemishes and roughness to surface of glaze. One candlestick with quite a few cracks. Both with some chips. Height of candlesticks approx 24 cm. Height of tallest jug approx 24 cm. Both harvest jugs with some chips and losses and cracks. The pottery figures with some chips and losses. The cast dolphin fountain head with wear and tarnish and appears to have fitments missing from tail and base. Height approx 13 cm. This item is not bronze but cast metal. The art pottery jug with some wear and dirt and the swan ornament with stains, crazing and some chips.

A fine 19th Century calamander ladies vanity case The rectangular hinged cover centred with a brass oval with a blue silk padded interior, the gilt metal lock plate stamped Betjeman & Sons makers, London with a compartmentalized tray fitted with a blue velvet panel with eight manicure items including six with Mother of Pearl handles, two rectangular glass boxes with engraved EPNS mounted covers, two cut glass jars with push on tops and a row five circular and square glass jars above a concealed drawer stamped A Scott, Wheeler Gate, Nottingham. 20x30x22.5cms. (illustrated) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 1778 - the rectangular hinged cover surface scratching wood and scratching to the oval brass inset, original pleated blue lining to inner lid, some staining to the lower section of the lid lining, gilt metal hinge and hinges bright some inner rusting to the bolt of the hinge. One rectangular glass bottle internal crack along the base, rectangular glass box minor chip to rim. Some surface scratching and bruising to the metal mounts of each item. Frieze drawer spring in good condition operated by the central internal button, with signature to the panel A Scott Nottingham. Drawer line is good condition, original padded lining some staining. One loop handle missing to the tray with the sewing compendium and rectangular boxes. Original red velvet applied to the base with some tears, good condition.
A Japanese nashiji lacquer hirashoku serving table on curving legs, the top modelled as a partly open kakemono showing a bearded immortal attended by a youth and an oni, the both carry symbolic utensils. (See illustration) Condition Report: Size is 11” x 7” x 3.5” Good condition. See images for damage. Background is dull and maybe oxidised. Item is from Meiji period.
A late 19th century woolwork sampler with an alphabet and numbers, above a verse by Annie Scarsbrook, Berkswell School 1879 and one other 19th century woolwork of "Kitty" by S.M. Condition Report: One item measures 30x30 the other 30x40. The 'kitty' picture has several stains and the other has some surface mould.

A 1920s MODEL GUN TURRET FROM METAL OFF THE SCUTTLED IMPERIAL GERMAN BATTLESHIP HELGOLAND, the well-made model fashioned as an inkstand in the form of a revolving gun turret, the inner lid marked “Cast from Metal ex-surrendered German Battleship Helgoland”, Thos. W. Ward Ltd. Sheffield, 1922, lacking one (of the two) ink reservoirs but otherwise an attractive item, extreme width -- 7½ins. (19cms.), Helgoland was the nameship of a small class of three battleships and one battle-cruiser ordered for the Imperial Navy during the celebrated Anglo-German ‘Arms Race’ of the early twentieth century. Built at Kiel, Helgoland herself was 549 feet in length with a 94 foot beam and displaced 25,200 tons deep loaded. With a main armament of 12-12in. guns, she could cruise at 20 knots and must have been a hugely impressive sight at full speed. In action at Jutland, in Vice-Admiral Schmidt’s 1st Squadron, she was interned at Scapa Flow when the High Sea’s fleet surrendered after the November 1918 Armistice. Laid up idle for six months, Helgoland was scuttled along with the rest of the fleet on 21st June 1919, after which began the famous salvage operation which lasted throughout the 1920s.

A Bakongo Nkisi Nkondi nail fetish figure from the Bantu People of The Democratic Republic of Congo, the standing figure with painted eyes and nail set body and large seashell held by a rope to aid the potency of the Nkisi, hollowed out and sealed compartment to the stomach which contains a "secret item" which is the most potent enabler of the Nkisi's power, height 62cm, width 19cm, depth 21cm. The Bantu People of the Congo basin cover many ethnic groups speaking the Bantu language. These nail fetish figures are specific to the Bakongo subgroup The Bantu People hence the popular tag of "Bakongo Fetish Figure". The Bantu People believed in the concept of a powerful spirit known as a Nkisi that is able to inhabit any object or entity. To that end, they created these power fetish figures and they invited these powerful spirits to posses through the spiritual coaxing and provocation of an Nganga. An Nganga is a native witch doctor, diviner, healer and spiritual mediator who is able to protect people against witchcraft, diseases and evil spirits.
