Russian inkwell in the form of a gilt bronze sleigh that carries the well. The glass inkwell is hidden within the sack along the back of the sled. Mounted to a malachite base.Provenance: Property from the distinguished collection of Mr. James Lee Soffer, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.Height: 3 1/2 in x width: 7 1/4 in x width: 4 1/2 in.Condition: There are no chips, cracks or losses to the glass inkwell. Light wear throughout, consistent with age and use. To the interior of the inkwell, there some ink stains. The bronze sleigh has tarnishing, some small areas of discoloration, especially along interior. There is residual polish collected in the recessed areas of the work. Some dirt and dust collected in recessed areas as well. The item opens smoothly on its hinges. There are some small chips and losses to the edges of the malachite base. Some small areas of discoloration throughout. To the underside of the base there is residual paper affixed. There are two holes drilled through the base where the sled is affixed. There are four felt tabs, one in each corner of the base.

Etched with the combined armorial crests of the prominent Ashkenazi Jewish Rothschild family and Cohen family along both sides of the rim. Stamped along the reverse with maker's marks, sterling lion passant, London city mark, date mark, and King George III duty mark.These plates were created for the 1806 marriage between Baron Nathan Mayer Rothschild and Hannah Barnett Cohen, daughter of Levi Barnett Cohen. Baron Nathan Mayer Rothschild was the founder of the English branch of this prominent European family and worked to maintain the elevated status of the Rothschilds among investment bankers of the day. At the time of his death, it was said that he was the richest man in England.Height: 1 1/4 in x diameter: 9 3/4 in. Gross weight of sterling: 21.41 Troy oz.Condition: No visible cracks or losses. No visible dents along the rim. No major dents; throughout the item, there are a few scattered areas with minute dents; however, they do not alter the overall appearance of the item significantly. The eyes appear to be restored with glue, visible under UV light. Wear to the underside, consistent with age and use.

Beverly Pepper (American, 1922-2020). Ink painting titled "Jerusalem" depicting two figures in loose brushstrokes, 1957. Signed, titled, and dated along the lower right. With an additional painting in ink along the verso. This is an early example of her art before she moved to working primarily with sculptures.While studying art theory with Gyorgy Kepes, she was introduced to the works of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Man Ray and met environmental artist Frederick Kiesler. In post-war Europe in 1949 while studying painting in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere she attended classes with cubist painter Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger at his atelier while visiting the studios of Ossip Zadkine and Brancusi.She worked as a painter but took up sculpture after a 1960 trip to Angkor Wat, Cambodia, where the temple ruins filled her with awe. Throughout her life she experimented with new and emerging sculptural techniques, becoming one of, if not the first sculptors to use Cor-Ten steel in her works.Height: 28 in x width: 20 in.Condition: The item is in generally good condition with no visible tears or losses, or major creases. From the verso, to the upper left margin, there is an area with adhesive residue, most likely old framer's tape.
