Lot 73

Ca. 100-300 AD. Roman. A beautiful gold ring featuring a circular band, flared shoulders, and a large oval bezel set with a garnet gemstone featuring a finely incised intaglio depicting a beast in left profile. Excellent condition. The item has undergone X-ray fluorescence analysis to confirm the metallurgical content suggesting its ancient origin and lack of modern trace elements. It also comes with a gemological and historical report by an independent specialist Anna Rogers. This analysis will accompany the purchase. Roman rings featuring carved gemstones, such as carnelian, garnet or chalcedony, were often engraved with the depiction of deities, allegories and zoomorphic creatures. Mythology and Roman history were used as a repertoire of decorative themes. To find out more about Roman rings and jewellery production in general, see Higgins, R. (1980). Greek and Roman jewellery. London: Methuen. Size: D: 17.1mm / US: 6 3/4 / UK: N 1/2; 4.4gProvenance: Property of a North London gentleman; previously acquire on the UK/European art market in the 1980s.

Lot 76

Ca. 618–907 AD. Chinese Tang Dynasty. The elegant figure stands on a flat, shaped base, with the head turned slightly to the side and her hands held up, away from the body and within the draped sleeves. In one hand, she holds a pomegranate-shaped item. Her red, green, light blue and white long robes fall in heavy folds that emphasize the graceful sway of her body. A flowery motif in a red-colour palette adorns the bottom part of her robe. The face is sensitively modelled with full rosy cheeks, a small mouth and elongated eyes, and is framed by an elaborate coiffure drawn up into a central chignon. This stately, elegant figure exemplifies the ideal standards of beauty and fashion that prevailed during the high Tang period of the 8th century in China. During this period, a more voluptuous body type had become fashionable, which was reflected in women's robes being long and loose-fitting, and their hair was worn in fuller hairstyles that framed the face. Other painted pottery figures representing this type of court lady are illustrated in The Quest for Eternity—Chinese Ceramic Sculpture from the People's Republic of China, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1987, pp. 139-40, nos. 83-84, and col. pl., p. 56. Several paintings on silk, from Turfan, of women that are similar in type to the present figure, depict them with pink cheeks, to indicate the use of rouge, which is seen on the full cheeks of the present figure (see The Ancient Art in Xinjiang, China, 1994, pp. 86-7, pls. 210, 213 and 215). The type of hairdo and stance of the present lady can be seen on a slightly smaller figure (53.4cm.) illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, Tokyo, 1976, vol. I, p. 67, no. 178. For a similar figure sold at Christie’s, see https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-1587630. For more general information on the Tang Dynasty, see Benn, C. (2002). Daily Life in Traditional China: The Tang Dynasty. Westport: Greenwood Press and Watt, J. C. Y., et al. (2004). China: Dawn of a Golden Age, 200–750 A.D. Exhibition catalogue. New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art. This piece has been precisely dated by means of a Thermo Luminescence analysis carried out by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. The TL certificate with its full report will accompany this lot. Size: L:490mm / W:199mm ; 4,8 kg. Provenance: UK private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.

Lot 94

Ca. 500 AD. Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty. A carefully crafted male attendant figure dressed in a red tunic and cream-coloured trousers; a cream sash or belt runs around his waist; a hat, possibly of the Wu Sha type, perches atop his head. He stands with his left arm by his side, the hand covered by his sleeve, and the other hand resting on his chest. Attendant figures such as this item were important to a variety of cultures with afterlife beliefs that involved trials, travels, or an afterlife similar to that which was lived on earth, as well as acting as representations of the ancestors. Popular iconographic choices included warriors, dancers, male and female courtly figures, and animals. The Northern Wei dynasty ruled northern China from ca. 386 to 534 AD and its most famous achievement was unifying a large empire following a long period of social and political turbulence. Craftsmen working under this dynasty were also responsible for beautiful works of art, as this figure exemplifies. Good condition.Size: L:260mm / W:65mm ; 575g. Provenance: From the private collection of a Somerset gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed before 2000 on the UK /European art markets.

Pelts/Hides: An Early 20th Century Duck Billed Platypus Patchwork Carriage Rug, the overall construction formed by forty five adult Platypus pelts, all stitched together to form a rectangular patchwork rug, mounted upon a brown baize backing material, dimensions of pelts 150cm by 117cm, overall including outer border 178cm by 142cm, by repute -''The carriage rug was purchased nearly 100 years ago by the current vendor and has remained in the family ever since. It was part of the contents included in the sale of Woodcliffe House near Leeds, which became their family's principal home. This was a favourite location for many Victorian textile barons who built substantial mansions with their new found wealth - many are still to be seen in what is now a planning conservation area and a significant site of social history. The property was purchased from an elderly gentleman who was the long term owner. As such, the rug had almost certainly been at that property for many years before the time of the sale. Pre-war it was used by the rear seat passengers in the family car as there were no effective in car heaters at that time - even in Rolls Royce vehicles! Since that time it has been in long term storage rather than on display, hence the excellent condition. Some investigations were made several years ago with the British Museum, which suggested that it was one of only two or three such examples of which they were aware; with one being in their collection. This item has never been offered on the open market previously''.

* Churchyard (Thomas, 1798-1865). Although his profession was that of a lawyer, his passion was painting, and it was to this pastime that he devoted much time and energy, both as an artist and as a collector. He and his wife had two sons and seven daughters, and most of his daughters showed an interest in, and a talent for, art. Churchyard was an early admirer of works by the Norwich School, and was particularly influenced by John Crome, one of the founder members of the society. He was also a great admirer of John Constable, and made skilful copies of his works; indeed his own Suffolk landscapes were often mistakenly thought to be by Constable. In 1831 Churchyard exhibited his first works at the Norfolk and Suffolk Institution in Norwich, which elected him an honorary member, and he subsequently exhibited in London, at the Royal Academy of Arts and the Society of British Artists. However, after trying to establish himself as a full-time artist in the capital in 1832, Churchyard failed to have any of his works accepted by the Royal Academy that year. As a result he returned to the law and didn't exhibit again for another 20 years. However, the artist continued painting in Suffolk, and formed a close circle of artistic and literary friends, including the poets, Bernard Barton and Edward Fitzgerald, and the son of the poet, George Crabbe, a group Fitzgerald described as ‘the wits of Woodbridge’. Both Churchyard and Fitzgerald were members of Ipswich Society of Professional and Amateur Artists, founded in 1832. Churchyard spent a great deal of money building up his art collection, and the result of this, coupled with a large number of offspring to support, and a family inheritance which failed to materialise, was that he died insolvent. However, he did leave behind an impressive collection of works by artists such as John Constable, Thomas Gainsborough, John Crome, and John Sell Cotman. His own work can be seen in a number of public collections, including the Tate, the British Museum, the V&A and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

His beautifully woven shawls became a symbol of wealth and elegance, sought after by the upper eschelons of society, and he was even patronised by the Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. The gift of such a precious item was frequently given as a declaration of true love by a suitor, as satarised in a cartoon in Le Charivari in 1847 which mentions Biétry by name. [Haig, Douglas, 1st Earl Haig, 1861-1928]. Maximes de guerre et pensées de Napoléon Ier., 5e. édition revue et augmentée, Paris: Librairie Militaire, 1863, some minor spotting and light marginal damp staining to preliminary leaves, scattered marginal pencil marks, autograph ink presentation inscription to half-title, 'Douglas Haig. 7th Queens Own Hussars from General Keith Fraser, Insp[ecto]r General of Cavalry', contemporary half calf over marbled boards with gilt-title labels to spine, rebacked with original spine relaid, a little wear and loss to spine leather, 16moQty: (1)NOTESField Marshal Douglas Haig's copy of Napoleon's War Maxims and Thoughts, possibly with his pencil markings. A nice association item. Haig was sent out to India in November 1886 as a junior officer and promoted to captain in 1891. He left India in 1892 but returned there briefly before returning home as Aide-de-camp to Sir Keith Fraser, Inspector General of Cavalry, a position he was appointed to on 28 April 1894. Haig entered Staff College, Camberley in 1896, completing the course and leaving in 1897. There he was taught that victory must come from defeating the main enemy army in battle, and that as in Napoleonic warfare, attrition was merely a prelude to the commitment of reserves for a decisive battlefield victory, and traces of this thinking can be seen in Haig's decision making for battles in World War I. The one maxim which has some pencil underlining is XVI in which Napoleon writes that one must avoid the battlefield one's enemy has reconnoitred and studied.
