Roman Knife Handle. Circa, 1st-2nd century AD. Copper-alloy, 23.07 grams. 59.83 mm. A very high status Roman bronze knife handle comprising an octagonal-section shank with intricately detailed incised line decoration, right hand finial with pearl between the thumb and forefinger. The surface is beautifully well preserved with traces of the original tinned surface. Ref: Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 285. Mills, Celtic & Roman Artefacts. RB178. Medieval Harness Finial. Circa 14th century AD. Size: 78.03 x 42.06 mm. A gilt copper-alloy harness finial formed of a hollow sphere with four arched arms. Each arm has a shield-shaped heraldic pendant attached. Through the centre is a hole where a fixing rod would attached it to a horses head gear. Only traces of detail survive on each of the pendants so its not possible to trace the owner. A very rare item with only a handful of surviving examples known. Fine walnut and marquetry month going longcase clock with five pillar movement, the 11.5" square brass dial with silvered chapter ring signed William Provost (Prevost), Newcastle on the silvered chapter ring enclosing a matted centre with subsidiary seconds dial, ringed winding holes and calendar aperture, the case with moulded edge long door inlaid with three panels of birds and foliate marquetry, also fitted with a circular lenticle, the base similarly inlaid and the sides with boxwood stringing, the hood with a flat stepped cornice over a foliate marquetry inlaid door surround, 81" high (pendulum, two large brass cased weights and keys) (Case alterations) *It is thought that William Prevost (signed Provost on the dial) was of French extraction and was born in the early 1660s. Although based in Newcastle, he obviously visited London regularly and usually signed his dials with a London address. He married Margaret Badudouin at St Mary Magdalene church in Fish Street, London in 1689. His most famous clock is the year going and striking walnut longcase clock exhibited in the Horological Masterworks exhibition, item 44. This clock shares the same Newcastle address *This clock was sold by Bonhams in their Fine Clocks sale dated 11th December 2007 (lot 174) for £9,600 and by Bearnes Hampton Littlewood on 7th October 2009 for £11,400 *The clock also features in Brian Loomes - Clockmakers of Britain 1286-1700, p381, fig 202

A Japanese Meiji period Satsuma globular vase with applied elephant head handles. Painted with a procession of geisher and samurai on a waterside path with mountains in the rear ground, painted in colours and heightened in gilt. Bearing a red character mark to the base.18cm. Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) hero rifle from the production, modified M1 Carbine, fitted inside custom aluminium casing painted in a wood effect, with retractable bayonet and leather strap, 35 inches long. The Apes in the film used modified M1 Carbines with additional housing to disguise the barrel and the magazine. Metal casings were used for the film as opposed to the wooden casings used in Planet of the Apes (1968) as these were prone to shatter when fired. A George III silkwork picture of a lady reading, late 18th century, within verre eglomise border and gilt composition oval frame; and two coloured mezzotints, late 18th/ early 19th century, one with a young woman in a landscape, the other with a gentleman in relief, each framed and glazed, the largest item 33 x 30.5cm overallCondition Report: Usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age.The needlework has a chip to its gilt composition frame, which also has some cracking, and some mottling to the verre eglomise. Otherwise it is quite well preserved. The glass is a little loose in its frame, and there are some rips to the paper backing.The mezzotints each have some irregularities in the glazing and in the case of the smaller print very minor losses, and the frame of the larger one has one or two nibbles to the interior moulding some white tac to the underside. Sommerfield, John (1908-1991) The Death of Christopher A Novel. Author's autograph manuscript (c.. 209pp.) and heavily annotated and corrected typescript (c.215pp.), inscribed in red pen on the title by the author "To him what launched this mss, John Sommerfield" and in the hand of S. Sommerfield "He has made restitution. May god rest his soul. I hope he doesn't lose on it. For Charles Stonehill, S. Sommerfield", manuscript in red or green ink and pencil, typescript corrected in red or green ink and pencil, in card folder with contact details of Vernon Sommerfield, some sections page numbered, Chapter 1 marked "June 1928, New York", at end marked "John Sommerfield, 19 Park Place, Kensington Gardens, W."Footnote: Note: Sommerfield left University College School at the age of 16 and worked as a newspaper delivery boy, stage hand and merchant seaman before moving to Chelsea, where he was active in the Communist Party. He appears to have joined the Communist Party in the early 1930s and it was a major part of his life for the following quarter century. He wrote columns for several Communist periodicals, including the Daily Worker, and was active in the Communist Party Writers' Group. Sommerfield's first two books, They Die Young (1930) – which was published in the United States as The Death of Christopher – and Behind the Scenes (1934) drew upon his experiences at sea and as a stage hand. 1936 saw the publication of May Day, which is considered Sommerfield's most important work. The novel was published by the Communist Party's publishing house, and fictionalises a Communist uprising in London. Shortly after the publication of May Day, Sommerfield volunteered for the International Brigades and fought in the Spanish Civil War alongside his friend John Cornford. After returning he discovered that he had been reported dead. During World War II he served as an aircraft support mechanic in Burma and India. This wartime service in Asia with the RAF provided the inspiration for some of his best short stories, collected after the war as The Survivors (1947). In 1937 Sommerfield published Volunteer in Spain, which was an account of his time in Spain. George Orwell called the memoir a "piece of sentimental tripe", while others praised it and called Sommerfield "an excellent writer". The book was dedicated to Cornford, who was killed in Spain in December 1936. The poet and novelist Malcolm Lowry, a close friend of Sommerfield's, counted him as an important influence, and dedicated his poem Song About Madrid, Useful Any Time to him and Julian Bell. Perhaps the most widely read of Sommerfield's works was Trouble in Porter Street, published in 1939. The Communist Party asked Sommerfield to write a manual about how to organise a rent strike. He wrote a short story for this purpose instead which was published cheaply as a pamphlet and sold in tens of thousands. Sommerfield was also active in the Mass Observation project and took the lead in the research, largely in Bolton, for The Pub and the People. Throughout the war and in the following decade, Sommerfield continued to write for Communist and progressive periodicals and literary journals, including John Lehmann's New Writing journal, and worked largely in documentary films. Among his writing, The Adversaries (1952) was a historical novel based on the life of the mathematician Evariste Galois while North West Five (1960) was a novel about a young working class couple struggling to make their own way in post-war Kentish Town in north London. The item appears to be a mixture of original manuscript and heavily annotated typescript drafts, new sections being headed "Mss 1st", "3/rd," etc. Due to erratic, and the absence of, page numbering, and not having a copy of the published novel, it has not been possible to establish with certainty if the entire novel is present in manuscript or typescript but it does appear to be complete. A significant and early literary manuscript of one of Britain's most radical political writers of the inter-war era, which also reflects Sommerfield's awareness of and response to modernist writing. Of particular topicality is Christopher's interest in the human consequences of technological advances and their implications for human liberty.
A late Regency mahogany secretaire bookcase of small proportions, the upper section with reeded cornice over two Gothic arch glazed and barred doors enclosing adjustable shelving on a base with fitted secretaire drawer with Bramah lock enclosing a fitted interior with drawers and pigeon holes, over a pair of panelled cupboard doors enclosing three linen shelves, the door with further Bramah lock, raised on turned cup and cover supports, 85.7 cm wide x 208 cm high x 51 cm deep CONDITION REPORTS A couple of the panes of glass are cracked and a couple have been replaced. There is some cracking to the veneer especially noticable on the top left-hand corner of the top section. Area of moulding missing to the left-hand section middle and some damage just around the corner. Some heavy scratches but old. Some damage to the moulding on the right-hand middle section. Ivory finials to some of the handles have broken. Entire item has clearly been well polished over the years. Some heavy surface scraching on the left-hand side to the base. Otherwise general wear and tear conducive with age and use to include knocks, bumps, stains, etc. See images for more details.
