Great Eastern Railway Brass Fireman's Helmet with the 'flying wing' crest and large GER initials on the frontspiece. The swept crown has immense detail of oak leaf design and the central badge has a dragon either side that extends to the floral strap retainers. An incredible item retaining the original, leather head shield inside and the original leather strap to which the chain-mail chinstrap has been stitched. It has been lightly polished over the years and is presented in that condition but would look even more stunning polished properly. Without doubt one of the best items we have ever had the pleasure to auction and believed to be the first one ever to come on the market. The brass GER Armband in the next lot originated from the same owner.

The historic Aintree Racecourse mounting bell, inscribed AINTREE RACECOURSE, 1831, above four mask motifs, cross-beam suspension, height 35cm., 13 3/4in., diameter 32cm., 12 1/2in. This bell has been used to signal the instructions for jockeys to mount their horses before every race at every race meeting held at Aintree since 1831, and as such even predates the first running of the Grand National in 1839. The bell has always been in the ownership of the Topham family rather than the racecourse itself and represents a rare opportunity to acquire a truly historic item of racing memorabilia.
A red silk jockey's jacket worn by Jem Mason, mounted in a glass fronted display case with a typescript caption reading JACKET WORN BY J.MASON, WHO RODE MR. J. ELMORE'S 'LOTTERY,' WINNER OF THE FIRST NATIONAL ON THIS COURSE, 86.5 by 73.5cm., 34 by 29in. For as long as can be remembered these silks were displayed in the County Stand at Aintree racecourse. However, little of the provenance of the silks is known to support the statement of the caption. The colours of Mr Elmore, the owner of Lottery, are not recorded in the racing calendars of the day, and despite a good deal of research from Grand National historians no published evidence has been found. However, a number of paintings and prints exist of Lottery and the Grand National and these always portray the jockey Jem Mason wearing a blue jacket and a black cap. Although, curiously, one print appears to go against this and portrays Mason in a reddish jacket. It is also possible to read the card and deduce that Mason wore this jacket in races during his career, but not necessarily while riding Lottery and winning the Grand National. Perhaps they were the racing colours of Mason himself? Although clearly an ancient and historic jockey's jacket and a superb collector's item, the exact meaning of the silks remains somewhat mysterious and worthy of further research.
Jamie Carragher: a yellow Liverpool No.23 Champions League away jersey from the 2004-05 European winning season, produced in anticipation of an away tie against French opposition and lacking the Carlsberg logo because of the alcohol sponsor's ban, long-sleeved, UEFA flash, the reverse lettered CARRAGHER. Liverpool did not encounter a French team during their path to European glory in season 2004-05 so this jersey was never worn, making it an unusual collector's item. Liverpool did play AS Monaco in the opening phase, but the French alcohol sponsor's ban does not extend to the Principality. The jersey was acquired by the present vendor from a Liverpool-based collector with ties to current and former Liverpool footballers.
