Impressum autem Venetijs : per Bernardinum de Vitalis de Lexona Vercellensem. : auspicijs et impensis Melchioris Sesse, 1537 Die XII Maij (Venice: De Vitali for Sessa, 12 May 1537).4to, fine contemporary limp vellum binding, remnants of clasps, ff. [24], 304. Two engraved printer’s device.Extremely rare edition of Roffredus' masterpiece. Each 'libellus' deals briefly with a different subject, ranging from episcopal powers to marriage, tithes and patronage; the substantial section on marriage considers issues as diverse as impotence, annulment, consanguinity, and marriage of minors, of those of different religion, or of those in sacred orders. Roffredus of Benevento (c. 1170-1244) was a well known jurist and advocate, at various times on either side of the conflict between the emperor Frederick II and the papacy. Roffredus based his work on the practice of the Roman Curia, and wrote that it was intended for 'jurists who know little or nothing of canon law'; humorous and sometimes anti-clerical, he approaches canon law rather as an extension of his own speciality of civil law. Provenance: 1. Owner's signature Cesare Fedele at title-page. 2. Ex-libris of Board of Law Library Trustees, Los Angeles.References: CNCE 74011 (4 copies). Out of Italy, OCLC locates only 1 copy worldwide at Harvard University. A light water-stain at some leaves and a small stain at the corner of some leaves, but a very fine copy.

He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism. Originally trained as a humanist lawyer, he broke from the Roman Catholic Church around 1530. In 1536 he published the first edition of his seminal work Institutes of the Christian Religion; then, he wrote commentaries on most books of the Bible, as well as theological and juridical treatises and confessional documents. Calvin's writing and preachings have spread throughout the world and provided the seeds for the branch of theology that bears his name. For the edition of this work, he received contributions from many other contemporary humanists, theologists and jurists, as mentioned in the title, like: Matthias van Wesenbeke (1531-1586), Johannes Goeddaeus (1555-1632), Jacques Godefroy (1587-1652), Barnabé Brisson (1531-1591), Hermann Vultejus (1565-1634), François Duaren, Jacques Cujas, Giulio Pace (1550-1635) e Hugues Doneau (1527-1591). [Law Books Bibliography] Fontana, Bibliotheca, 1688 THE FUNDAMENTAL BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR LAW BOOKS UNTIL 1688AND ONE OF THE FEW BIBLIOGRAPHIES ON ANCIENT LAW BOOKSFontana, Augustino. Amphitheatrum legale In Quo Quilibet Operum Legalium Author habet suam sedem ordine Alphabetico collocatam seu Bibliotheca Legalis Amplissima […]. Parmae, Typis Iosephi ab Oleo, & Hippolyti Rosati, 1688.3 parts on 5 bound together in a Folio volume (292x190 mm), full vellum binding, 5 raised bands spine, reinforced with same material, sepia ink handwritten tittles at second spine section. Sprayed edges, cc. [20], col. 710, pp. [3, blanks], [2, last blank], col. 480, pp. [2, blanks], [2, last blank], col. 442, p. [1, blank]. Romanic and italic font, text in Latin and Italian.First edition of the most important bibliography related to law books till 1688, that maps the printed editions of medieval and renaissance jurists. The Amphitheatrum legale is a wide collection containing more than fifteen thousand items, sorted by author, and by subject. Fontana compiled this work taking inspiration from the Bibliotheca legalis, handwritten catalogue by Domenico Maria Corsi, future Bishop of Rimini and Cardinal, adding the items contained in the collection of Martin Upen’s (Bibliotheca realis, Frankfurt, 1679). Once published the Amphitheatrum had a great diffusion in Italy and abroad. Even at the starting od XIX century Pillet, in the item dedicated to Fontana in Biographie universelle ancienne et moderne gave a positive judgment, considering the work richer and easier to be consulted than the work of Upen, despite the correction, integration and Supplementa that, differently from Fontana, enriched this last work along the time. ITALIAN TRANSLATION:3 parti su 5 legate insieme in un volume in-folio (292x190 mm), piena pergamena rigida con dorso a cinque nervi rinforzato con lo stesso materiale, titoli manoscritti al secondo scomparto in inchiostro bruno, tagli spruzzati del medesimo inchiostro, cc. [20], col. 710, pp. [3, bianche], [2, l’ultima bianca], col. 480, pp. [2, bianche], [2, l’ultima bianca], col. 442, p. [1, bianca]. Carattere Romano e Corsivo, testo in latino e in italiano. Traces of foxing, but overall a very good copy.
