An officer’s helmet c 1850, of the Royal Midlothian Yeomanry Cavalry, binding to front and back peaks, silver plated headband bearing regimental title, tall plain comb (minor cracks to top), with scarlet hair crest, velvet backed graduated chinscales, ear roundels bearing applied Star of the Order of the Thistle, a crowned large version of which forms the helmet plate, leather lining. GC a desirable item. See front cover Note: A leather helmet was adopted in 1860 and the regiment was disbanded in 1871. See Carman “Headdress of the British Army-Yeomanry” p 52 and plate 23.

Postal item: a Henry Hooper, postal scale detached weight, obverse the Royal Crest crowned, within Garter, surrounding legend “The Post Office Letter weight”, reverse crowned drapes bearing legend “For Rowland Hill’s Plan of Penny Postage” surrounded by legend including “For H Hooper 12 Aug 1839”, diam 28mm, the top edge bearing remains of balance arm. VF (7) Note: Prior to 1840 the cost of sending letters was related to distance sent and number of pages included (this resulted in some early letters with messages written diagonally over other text); following the reforms the charge was determined by weight.

Obverse: mounted artilleryman left, brandishing his sabre in a business like manner, legend “Horse Artillery”. Reverse legend around the rim “Wanted for the East Indies” with the field legend “Apply/ at No 35 / Soho Square/ London” grained edge. EF (the reverse field shows signs of die corrosion). A rare item.
