Autograph letter signed as principal secretary, to Sir Thomas Heneage, 4th September, 1577 1 page, folio (31.2 x 21.2cm), with conjugate address leaf, full text reads, ‘By your letters together with Mr Manwoods I have receyved and wyll doe what shall be in me to further him to the place of Chief Baron, moved therto in respect of her ma[jesty’]s service, knowing no man in Englande so fit to supplie the place. I be not withstandyng if he hathe great enemyes, and those that have chiefest voyce in chapter but perhaps tyme and other well handeling may bring them to be of an other opynion. For the outrage committed uppon my brother Baale [Beale] for any thing I can yet perceyve, for if they tooke not awaye his packet of letters, I suppose the same to be done by pyrates and not by practyce. For your last of matters, assure yourself, if my next occasion shall serve, I wyll not forget you and so in haste I commit you to God. At Purforde the fourth of September 1577, Yours assuredly Fra. Walsingham', endorsed, address leaf with seal tear not affecting text Elizabeth's principal secretary and spymaster conspires with his fellow politician and courtier Sir Thomas Heneage (c.1532-1595) to install a controversial ally in the important post of chief baron of the exchequer. Notorious for his hard dealings in property transactions, Roger Manwood (1524/5-1592) accrued a coterie of powerful enemies; the principal opponent to his appointment as chief baron may have been William Cecil, perhaps on the grounds of Manwood's 'profound commitment to the common law as the subject's protection, and his dislike of the intervention of the privy council at the petition of favoured individuals' (ODNB). Manwood was also the dedicatee of Reginald Scot's The Discovery of Witchcraft (1584), and the judge at Christopher Marlowe's trial for murder in 1589. He permitted Marlowe's release without charge, in which regard it may be significant that the playwright had in 1587 briefly been employed as an agent of Walsingham's.The career of diplomat and administrator Robert Beale (1541-1601), ‘my brother Baale', was closely entwined with Walsingham's. Having accompanied Walsingham on his embassy to Paris in 1570, he subsequently married the sister of Walsingham's wife, and deputised for him on several occasions as principal secretary during his (Walsingham's) absences from court. In 1577 he was dispatched to Germany to bring about a reconciliation between the region's protestant factions and thereby strengthen international resistance to the forces of Catholicism. His ship was raided by pirates while crossing the channel, with Walsingham's letter implying his great relief that no sensitive documents relating to the mission had been taken. Later, as clerk of the privy council, Beale was heavily involved in deciding the fate of Mary Queen of Scots, delivering her sentence of death at Fotheringhay in November 1586, and her signed death warrant in February the following year.Provenance: 1. Lot 179

James VI and I (1566-1625), King of Scotland, England and Ireland Autograph letter signed to George Keith, 4th Earl Marischal, [Edinburgh], 28th September [1589] 7 lines plus signature ‘James R’ and 7-line autograph postscript, reading:‘My littill fatt porke, the contineuall langoure I have had of your companies delaye in cumming & the feare I have of langer protracting of time yete throuch the contrairiousness of the windes hes at last constrained [me] to post away the bearere heirof to seike in qwhat ever parte of the warlde ye be in,  als weill to bring me certaine novelles of youre estate as to informe you of sum thingis concerning youre cumming, qwhom willing you to credit & praying God to speid weille youre voyage, I bidd you hairthe fairweill, in haist this last sondaye of September, James R. I pray you excuse to the embassadouris my not writing to thaim at this tyme sen youre presence thaire may suplee that default & besydis I knaw not thaire names & styles’.Verso with James’s red wax seal, contemporary manuscript endorsement in secretary hand (‘To .. The Erle Mareshall & Ambassador’), additional later inscription (late 18th/early 19th century). Old folds, damp-staining, paper disruption along folds partially obscuring a few words in middle of second and third lines, marginal seal tear. Repaired, mounted and framed in 1999 by Mette de Hamel James, writing in broad Scots to the magnate charged with securing his marriage to Anne of Denmark, seeks urgent news of the negotiations, the embassy’s return to Scotland having been held up by recurrent storms, which the following year would be found to be the work of a treasonous coven of witches, setting in train ‘the most famous witch-hunt in Scottish history’ (ODNB).A Danish match for James had been suggested as early as 1581, and, receiving strong support from parties including Edinburgh’s merchant community, eventually prevailed over the alternative proposal of Catherine of Bourbon, sister of the future Henri IV of France, whose demands for support in his struggle for the French throne James would or could not meet. ‘On account of his rank and learning Marischal was chosen to lead the embassy sent to arrange James VI's marriage to Anne of Denmark. His great wealth must also have influenced the decision, for he bore most of the initial cost of the embassy’ (ibid.). The embassy sailed from Leith in early June 1589, and after Marischal received permission to reduce the exorbitant dowry initially demanded, the wedding was celebrated on 20th August at Kronburg castle with Marischal acting as James’s proxy. The Scots and their new queen set sail for Scotland early in September, but their passage was held up by persistent bad weather, and eventually the decision was made to winter in Oslo. In an act of now semi-legendary gallantry, James decided to travel to Norway and retrieve his bride himself, setting sail in October and marrying Anne in person on 24th November. He spent the next five months in the country, travelling about, meeting Scandinavian theologians and scientists, and falling in love with his new wife.Soon after the royal party’s return to Scotland in April 1590, James was confronted with the discovery of a coven of witches from Haddingtonshire, east of Edinburgh, who had allegedly conspired to assassinate him and his wife by raising the storm which had beset their return voyage. Though James was at first sceptical about the claims, one of their number convinced him of their powers by reporting a conversation he had had with Anne on their wedding night in Oslo. In the following months dozens of alleged witches were tortured, tried and executed, in what was the first major series of witchcraft trials under criminal law.Letters entirely in James’s hand are very rare. An autograph draft sonnet was sold as part of the Robert S. Pirie collection in 2015; otherwise the only fully autograph letter traced in auction records is one offered at Sotheby’s, 1st-3rd March 1965, concerning hunting horses.George Keith is styled in sources including the ODNB as the fourth earl Marischal, but in others as the fifth: the confusion may be due to the fact that his predecessor in the position was his grandfather, William Keith (c.1510-1581), rather than his father, also William, who died in 1580 and was known as the master of Marischal.Provenance: John Wilson, Autographs, Documents, Manuscripts: Catalogue Twenty-Four (1976), item 2. Published: G. Autograph letter signed as lord treasurer to Lord Cobham as warden of the Cinque Ports, with MS articles of war the letter dated Theobalds, 30th September 1587, 2 pp., folio (28 x 20.4cm), signed ‘W. Burghley’, conjugate leaf endorsed presumably by Cobham ('from my Lord Threasorer [sic] touchinge the artykles to be observed by those that are to goo the seas, set forth by those of the ports') and addressed to him in a secretarial hand, seal tear not affecting text; the accompanying document 5 pp., folio (27.6 x 20.4cm), written in a secretarial hand, final blank with endorsement '1587 xxii September, Artikles to be observed by those of the cincq ports' in the same hand as the previous endorsement (Cobham's) and completed in a secretarial hand(2) A rare and important insight into the stirring of the Elizabethan war machine in response to the growing threat of a Spanish invasion following the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in early 1587. Burghley sends Cobham an amended copy of the detailed articles drawn up by Cobham in response to an order from Elizabeth in August to place the Cinque Ports on a war footing, noting sardonically in his covering letter that the queen's demands would seem to have made peace with Spain impossible, in opposition to the designs he shares with the lord warden: ‘Whosoever shall consider these articles, and thynk that they must contynew, must presume that neither the L[ord] Warden, nor any other shall have the good luck to make a peace for England with the K. of Spayn … [and] also add to his imagination that the L. warden … as the high admyrall of England [Howard of Effingham] doth … tak more plesur or proffitt, by warrs than by peace. But I that know your L[ordship] inwardly can and will imagyne otherwise'. In his response, preserved in the Cecil papers at Hatfield, Cobham thanked Burghley for his ‘good and necessary additions’ and ventured the potentially treasonable remark that he could 'look for no other reward but her Majesty's high displeasure, and shame to me and my house for ever' (Calendar of the Cecil Papers in Hatfield House: Volume 3, 1583-1589, 592).An engrossing illustration of the centrality of the guerre de course to English naval strategy in the Tudor period, the articles instigate the mobilisation of privateers out of the Cinque Ports of Kent and Sussex and comprise under eleven headings specific directions for their conduct. It is declared that ‘all and every of the inhabitants of the cinq ports … who shall eyther in his own person serve or otherwyse bear any charge or adventure … shall not in any manner of wayse be reputed or challenged for any offender against her ma[jestie]s lawes'. Privateers are permitted a free trade in spoils and given specific licence to attack all Spanish shipping and any vessels from ‘such townes as doo make warre against the provinces of Holland and Zealand, as Dunkerk, Neuport, Sluys or any other towne in possession of them'. Cobham became warden of the Cinque Ports shortly after Elizabeth's succession in 1558, his appointment due largely to the high regard in which he was held by Cecil, the new queen's secretary of state: ‘Possibly Cecil’s “dearest friend”, Cobham was certainly to be his most enduring one for the next forty years' (ODNB). The position gave Cobham a critical role both in coastal defence and intelligence operations. In January 1588 he joined an embassy to the Duke of Parma, alluded to by Burghley in his letter and having the aim of averting the Spanish invasion, but was forced to call off the negotiations when it transpired that a fellow ambassador had exceeded his instructions by offering an armistice. Burghley was by that point lord treasurer and spent the months preceding the arrival of the Armada raising funds and supervising naval supplies. In 1589 Burghley's son Robert Cecil married Elizabeth Brooke, Cobham's daughter.Provenance:1. Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), MS 257502. Sotheby's, Bibliotheca Phillippica … New Series: Seventh Part, 14th-15th June 1971, lot 1471.3. Bernard Quaritch, Autographs and Manuscripts (catalogue 931), 1973, item 633.

Pokemon TCG - Framed and mounted Uncut Fossil Holo Sheet. The framed uncut sheet featuring the holographic cards from the Fossil expansion. This belonged to a former staff member of Wizards of the coast (WOTC) who sadly passed away recently.   Provenance: This item comes from the estate of a former Wizards of the coast staff member please see the certificate on verso.  112x78cm A note from the deceased's family: He was operations manager dealing with supply and logistics for Wizards of the Coast (WOTC) during the burst in popularity of the Pokémon phenomenon in the late 1990s. At one point he was negotiating directly with Cartamundi to hold print on other card games so that the extraordinary demand for Pokémon cards could be met. One consignment of cards ended up in Moscow, Russia rather than Idaho, USA and he was despatched to sort out the issue and get the aircraft sent on to the correct destination. In talking with the Russian officials about the cargo, he ended up explaining Pokémon so well that, in a nutshell, they bought it, so he is responsible for introducing Pokémon to the Soviet Union. Previously, as sales manager for TSR, inc (creators of Dungeons and Dragons) his knowledge and expertise helped him achieve great sales of the Magic the Gathering trading card game. His genuine and affable nature made him a popular choice to oversee the absorption of TSR into WOTC where, on his later departure, he was presented with the uncut sheet as a leaving gift.
