WWII Fire Watcher Volunteers MountA copper-alloy badge or mount of an erotic and very explicit nature. The badge takes the form of a standing male figure in the act of engaging in sexual intercourse with a female who lies on the ground. Both participants are arranged so that their backs face the viewer. Underneath is a curving rectangular swag is blazoned with the word 'FIREWATCHER'. The Fire watchers were civilian volunteers who effectively worked as and auxiliary fire service during the Second World War, both looking out for and controlling fires set by incendiary bombs in cities across the country. Though a crucial wartime service, many fire watchers suffered the butt of many jokes implying that their long night time service was not only to put out fires but maybe to visit the many lonely women who's men were away at war. This piece is certainly a home made object and not officially made to be displayed publicly, undoubtedly and item such as this would have offended most in the 1940's. Most likely made by a local fire watcher as part of a prank or jest.Provenance: Found Witherley, Leicestershire 2008. Recorded on the PAS database as, NARC-2DB601.
