The Prince announces 'Armed with your pruning book, and now at Xmas a saw too, I shall have no excuse if everything in the garden isn't properly trimmed and tidy!' and continues 'Thank you so much for even thinking of sending me something for Christmas. I was enormously touched & only you can know how useful it will be!', also writing 'I do hope you received the book on French Gardens which I sent you - I looked through it briefly before wrapping it up and was entranced by it. I couldn't put it down & there & then wrote a note to my office with a list of some of the gardens in the book, saying that I wanted them to record the fact that I would like to make a visit to some of them in 1985 (in May)! I think it is an essential item in my education.' The Prince further reports 'The Kew possibilities sound very exciting & I am indebted to you for suggesting the visit. I spoke to the Head Gardener at Windsor over Xmas & gave him your list of things for the greenhouse & he said he would provide as many spares as he could for Highgrove' and also refers to possible improvements to a kitchen garden by Machin, explaining 'it transpired that their prices had gone right up since the publication of the catalogue you sent me & they were quoting over £2000 for the fibre glass construction! As a result I thought it best to continue with Palmer's tender & to do as much of the work as possible with my own people.'
