19TH CENTURY WALNUT SYMPHONIUM MUSICAL CLOCK, carving and relief to the body and movement stamped Lenzkirch and 1 Million 116667, with winder handle and a quantity of discs, 197 (h) x 58 (w) x 37cms (d)Auctioneer's Note: symphonium musical clocks are a type of mechanical clock that plays music using a symphonium, which is an early form of a mechanical music box. These clocks were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combining timekeeping with musical entertainment. The clock contains a symphonium, which plays music using a set of tuned metal discs with protrusions or pins. As the clock mechanism triggers the symphonium, the disc rotates, and the pins pluck a comb with tuned teeth, producing musical notes. These clocks could play different tunes depending on the disc installed. Owners could switch discs to hear different pieces of music. In addition to playing music, these clocks were often elaborately designed, featuring intricate woodwork or metal casings, making them both a decorative piece and a functional timepiece. The clock mechanism typically automatically starts the music at set intervals, such as on the hour or at specific times during the day. Symphonium musical clocks were a luxury item and represented the pinnacle of domestic mechanical music entertainment before the advent of electronic music devices.Provenance: private collection Conwy
