Lot 17

HMS. Schiedam, lost in Gunwalloe, 1684 A lead container or possibly a ‘counter-weight’ (?). Square with two lugs, measuring 11cm tall and 8cm square, 5kg Yet another mystery item, but very different to the previous three! It measures 11cm x 8cm square, but has more prominent and stronger lugs. This was found in the wreck of HMS. Schiedam, lost in Gunwalloe 1684. A captured Dutch vessel, taken into the Royal Navy and carrying naval stores when lost by storm.

Lot 16

HMS. Colossus, wrecked 1798, Isles of Scilly A lead container or possibly a ‘counter-weight’ (?). Square with two lugs, measuring 15.5cm tall and 7.5cm square, 6kg Another mystery item – this one is much taller and heavier than lots 14 and 15, measuring 15.5cm tall and 7.5cm square, but its two lugs have never been drilled with a hole, suggesting it had never been used? This one was found on the wreck of HMS. Colossus, lost off Samson, Isles of Scilly, 12.1798. This warship was homeward bound from the Mediterranean, having been away from Portsmouth for 18 months, which supports the suggestion this item was dockyard supplied.

Lot 14

HMS. Association, lost in the Isles of Scilly in 1707 A lead container or possibly a ‘counter-weight’ (?). Square with two lugs, measuring 11.5cm x 7.5cm, 3.7kg This item is a true historical puzzle, in 40 years Richard has never been able to establish its purpose or function. This item and the three others that follow, all appear to serve the same purpose, all being found in early British Men O’War, dating from 1707. This item is identical to a second, both from the wreck of HMS. Association, lost in the Isles of Scilly in 1707, but the other two are very different. They are not uniform in size so were not measures of some sort, and were the lugs for a handle? Perhaps a piece of timber was inserted and the lugs were for screws or nails?

Lot 171

Length of stock (length of pull) 37cm, length to toe 37cm, length to heel 38cm. Chamber length is 2.5"General condition comments: some light marks to the exterior barrels. The stock has some historic scars and notches but otherwise is in good order. The foregrip has what appears to be an historic repair to the wooden grip, and possibly a replaced screw thread in the recess of the lever? The case is well worn, some of the stitching is coming unpicked, the handle is replaced, wrap-around straps missing, the interior a little tired but fits the gun well.
