Lot 115

A RARE SULPHIDE PORTRAIT BUST OF GEORGE WASHINGTON BY DESPREZ FRENCH, EARLY 19TH CENTURY The polished glass medallion with bust of Washington facing to his right, the back of the bust marked "DESPREZ", the whole of circular sunburst form with pointed edge and ribbed back, floral gilt bronze suspension mount and loop, in later glazed case the sulphide 10.5cm diameter, the case 24 x 21cm Provenance: By family descent from the Crane and Van Duzer families in New York. Barthélemy Desprez (fl.1773-1819) was a chemist and the chief modeler at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres until approximately 1792. He pioneered the creation and invention of sulphide portraits in France- a process which was continued with his son Desprez Jnr. and brought to England by Apsley Pellatt (1791-1863). From the likely dating of this example it is very difficult to determine which may have been responsible for the creation of it. It is possible that this portrait is derived in part from a print after Jean-Antoine Houdon's marble bust of Washington executed 1785-1792. One such likely source is Joseph Wood's portrait after Houdon engraved by William Satchwell Leney and published by Joseph Delaplaine in Philadelphia in 1814, an example of which is held in the Royal Collection (RCIN 618879). It would seem that this sulphide was originally created possibly as one of a pendant pair of similar sunburst form- the other modelled as Benjamin Franklin looking to his left. An example of the Franklin portrait is held in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (1927X https://npg.si.edu/object/npg_1927X) but misattributed to the French sculptor Louis Desprez (1799-1870). At the time of cataloguing no comparable sulphide depiction of Washington has been found- an example of the pendant Franklin sulphide was sold as part of lot 699- Brunk Auctions, Asheville, North Carolina, Important Private Collection from Boston, 12th November, 2022 ($3,000 excl. BP). Condition Report: With mild wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. With inclusions and glass flaws from manufacture and various small chips around outer edges- gilt bronze suspension looks to be original, Currently stored in glazed box with retailers label for D B Butler & CO, Madison Ch ambers New York. Although the box is good for display- the brass pin mounts around it are not foam protected making removal and transport of the piece in/from the box liable to cause chips. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request. A BEAUVAIS AMUSEMENTS CHAMPÊTRES TAPESTRY AFTER JEAN BAPTISTE OUDRY FRENCH, CIRCA 1780 Woven with Oudry's design 'La Main Chaude' ("Hot Cockles"), figures in a wooded landscape beside a stream and stone folly, an open landscape with chateau visible in the distance, a shepherdess and her flock on the opposite bank, within a scrolling bold acanthus frame border approximately 300cm high, 397cm wide The design for this tapestry panel belonged to a series of "amusements champêtres" devised by Oudry (1686-1755) with one stage of his composition preserved in a drawing in the Stockholm National Museum (No. 2890 / I863). The scene features a game of "hot cockles" where a blindfolded person bent over with his head in the lap of a woman. The other players slapped him on the hand that is tucked behind his back, and he had to guess who it is. When the person guesses correctly who slapped him, that person takes his place. The game is depicted in a contemporary painting (1767-1773) by Fragonard (National Gallery of Art, Washington, 1946.7.6). A version of this tapestry is held in the Harvard Art Museum (1953.114). Condition Report: With wear, marks, repairs and sun fading as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The whole with a slightly brown tint but retaining some of the more fragile lighter colour tones. Lot 330

AN ATTIC RED FIGURE CUP FRAGMENT ATTRIBUTED TO THE ERETRIA PAINTER, CIRCA 440-410 BC Showing part of a nude youth in fine detail holding a hare, mounted on a giltwood stand the shard 5 x 4.5cm, the stand 11cm high Provenance: By repute: Lord Esher (1852-1930), Glyn Philpot (1884-1937) Private Collection. Gifted to the vendor by his mother. His mother was married to the Hon Patrick Lindsay (head of the Old Masters department of Christie's in London (1928-1986). He in turn inherited it from his father the Earl of Crawford and Balcarres (1900-1975). Not known how/when he was gifted or acquired it but it seems likely that he knew Glyn Philpot. Two labels to reverse, first inscribed: "Given us by Glyn Philpot, to whom it was given by 1st Lord Esher", second label inscribed: 'Part of a stemless cup circa 430 BC, an exquisite work by Eretria painter, one of the most charming artists of the free style. J.D.Beazley 14.7.55" Glyn Philpot's friendship with Reginald Baliol Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher (1852-1930) is quite well known. Philpot's portrait of Esher (sold Christie's London 15 Dec 2022, lot 152) initiated a friendship between the two resulting in another, less formal, portrait commissioned and then exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1927. From this friendship and the dates, it is possible that the label on the reverse may refer to 2nd Viscount Esher- and not his father.
