Ryobi petrol strimmer CONDITION REPORT: This item runs but is difficult to start.

Lot 1

The Evangelist John, with his attribute and pointing to a copy of his Gospel, with a single Latin word “Iohannis” in Insular capitals, on a silver cornerpiece from an Anglo-Saxon bookbinding [England, seventh to ninth century (most probably ninth century)] Silver cornerpiece, formed to fit around one outer corner of a bookbinding, with niello carving in surface showing John standing within a roundel pointing to an open book, with his attribute of an eagle peeping around his right shoulder, “IO/HA/NNIS” in Phase II Insular capitals over his left shoulder, three animal masks (probably two roaring bears and a snake with bulging eyes) at interior corners, the bears with pouncing to their muzzles, the open eyes of these animals serving as holes for the pins to hold the piece to the book board, 30mm. square A fine example of high-grade Anglo-Saxon metalwork, most probably from a key moment in English history: the Viking invasions and the repelling of those by King Alfred Provenance: 1. From the binding of a de luxe Anglo-Saxon codex, most probably a Gospel Book of the ninth century. An archaeo-metallurgical report by Dr. Brian Gilmour (employing energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence and photomicroscopy of micro-cracking to the surface) indicates that this item is of an early medieval date, with trace impurities of copper and lead probably due to the reuse of impure scrap silver in its production. It may have been originally gilded, having a surprisingly high 8.9% gold reading on its surface (against 0.64% from section analysis). This use of gold, as well as the close stylistic comparisons with other refined examples of Anglo-Saxon metalwork (see below) sets this among the finer products of ninth-century England. The ninth century saw many opportunities for the breaking down of earlier bindings into their component scrap parts, and also for the production of the parent book of this decoration. Viking attack swept across England in the first half of the ninth century, bringing all states there to their knees, with the exception of Wessex. Much metalwork must have been seized by the invaders, and many communities must have been left without essential Christian books. In the last decades of that century, Alfred brought this onslaught to a stop, and turned his attention to a necessary renaissance of Christian knowledge and book production, most famously sending a copy of Gregory’s Cura Pastoralis in English translation, to every bishopric in the country with “an aestel [perhaps pointer] worth 50 mancuses [the equivalent of a half a pound of gold].” The present piece may have been taken from a codex during the invasions and lost, or been part of a new codex copied to replace one lost during the invasions.2. From an English collection, and previously in the Don Lee antiquities collection before 1990. Text and art style:The Latin inscription here is in Phase II style Insular capitals, those stemming from the display script developed in a Hiberno-Saxon context c. 700, and used in England from the eighth century to somewhere in the ninth century. In manuscript art they are found most prominently in the Book of Cerne (Mercia, ninth century; Cambridge University Library, MS. Ll.I.10), and in metalwork in the inscription (again for John the Evangelist) on a gold niello plaque of almost the same dimensions and doubtless also from a book binding (now British Museum M&LA 1978, 1-1,1: reproduced in L. Webster and J. Backhouse, The Making of England, 1991, no. 66a, pp. 82-83). In these two cases as well as the present one the capitals are thin and angular with an ‘A’ whose second stroke extends above the apex of the letter and curves to the left. All that separates them are minor features (here the leaning cross bars of the ‘N’s are higher than those of the others and the lowermost stroke of the ‘S’ is diagonal rather than sitting on the horizontal line) or paleographical aspects set by the media the scribe was working in (the Book of Cerne has long curling penstrokes at the end of its descenders, while the metalwork examples are necessarily shorter and squatter). In style the figure of the evangelist on the present piece shows great affinity with the central figure of the Fuller Brooch (Making of England, no. 257, pp. 280-281), but without the animal-like downturned ears and pointed nose of that figure. In addition, the eagle that peeks around our figure with its down-turned mouth and diamond shaped eye finds close parallel on the gold niello plaque noted above. The wide staring eyes and dispassionate flat-line mouth in the present piece are a common feature of the depiction of forward facing portraits in early medieval art, which endured until the late tenth century in the Anglo-Saxon book arts (compare, among many others, the Christ in Majesty page in the Codex Amiatinus, made before 716, Monkwearmouth/Jarrow: Making of England, no. 88, p. 124; and the depiction of Cassiodorus in Durham Cathedral Library, MS. B.II.30, eighth century, Northumbria: ibid., no. 89, p. 125). At the time of this sale, the British Library will be hosting the largest and most important exhibition Anglo-Saxon codices, fragments and artefacts to happen to date, with the celebrated Codex Amiatinus returning to Britain for the first time in 1300 years. It is impossible to prove, but tempting to speculate, that this small ornament may once have been on the binding of one of the codices in that exhibition, or at least one as elegant and opulent as the finer examples there. Examples of Anglo-Saxon metalwork with any script on the open market are rare, and those of comparable quality breathtakingly so.

Lot 270

Large Wooden Sideboard Recovered from Herman Goering’s HQ at Villa Marie Christine, Pas de Calais, France, an Art Deco walnut veneer sideboard of semi-serpentine form, central double cupboard, flanked by two further cupboards with internal shelving, raised on splayed feet. The sideboard originally housed in the home of the Leleu Family, the home was requisitioned in 1940 by the Germans and became the Headquarters of Herman Goering and it is said that from this HQ he planned the Luftwaffe’s proposed involvement in the invasion of England and the Battle of Britain. The sideboards top has an engraved plaque which reads, “THIS SIDEBOARD BELONGED TO REICHSMARSCHALL HERMANN GORING AND WAS USED BY HIM WHILST PREPARING THE LUFTWAFFE FOR HIS INVASION OF ENGLAND FROM HIS HQ THE VILLA MARIE CHRISTINE IN WISSANT PAS DE CALAIS (THE HOME OF JAQUES & CHRISTINE LELEU WHICH HE REQUISTIONED IN 1940) IT WAS LEFT BEHIND WHEN THE HOUSE WAS ABANDONED BY HIM LATER IN THE WAR”. Accompanying the sideboard is a selection of photographs and a signed letter of provenance from Mr Leleu which states, “This Sideboard, along with two large leather arm-chairs (brought from Germany or requisitioned by the Germans?) were left behind at our family seaside house, Villa Marie-Christine at Wissant, Pas-de-Calais.The house had been requesitioned by the Germans during the war and used by General Galan and the Reichsmarchall Herman Goering as his headquarters whilst preparing the Luftwaffe for the invasion of England. When at the end of the war, my parents returned to the house, the sideboard and the two chairs remained left, as well as a large slogan painted in a fresco script across the wall of the drawing room, which my parents painted over. Another wall had two kind of frescoe representing a soldier looking out at England, as he was ready to cross the channel, I discovered this later frescoe during works in 2006. The armchairs have been refurbished in green velvet and are still at the villa, but this sideboard rather overpowered the room and we sent it back to the family home 6 miles away at 1 Rue Pasteur, Marquise, where it was later sold to Warner Dailey with this signed statement (Gilbert Leleu) November 2007”. This item remained in the Warner Dailey collection until sold in 2015.

'We have posted 50 prints of your block to your brother today - How many more prints do you want us to do?' Endorsed at head, 'Think the estimate was 500 for 20/- but have no business papers with me. If this is correct please do the remainder making up to the 500. A.G. 24.10.05.'With a copy of Cuala's 'Garnett' bookplate, featuring a dragon and a dragonfly, presumably the item referred to.(b) ALS from Evelyn Gleeson to Miss Garnett, Aug. 5 1924, 2 pp (single sheet), on attractive headed Dun Emer Guild paper. 'I was so very pleased to have a letter from you. I have not been much in London of late years, but I often wondered how you were .. Yes, I am still making rugs and carpets - I do not do so many of the designs now as my niece has grown up, a very clever designer .. If you like, we can send you some coloured sketches to show to your friend. I was so glad to hear that the rugs you have of mine have worn so well. There is a great deal of weaving done over here now and some of the pieces are beautiful ..' With a good signature.Letters from Evelyn Gleeson are rare. She was the originator of the entire Dun Emer enterprise, inviting Elizabeth and Susan (Lily) Yeats, then living in London with their father, to return to Dublin in 1902 and start a craftwork enterprise with her. Disagreements developed, and in 1903 the Yeats sisters set up on their own as printers and embroiderers under the Cuala name, leaving Miss Gleeson with the Dun Emer title and the weaving business, in which she continued until her death in 1944. Miss Garnett may be a relation of the critic Edward Garnett. (3)

Inscribed to 'My Friend Maud Gonne'Yeats (W.B.) The Wanderings of Oisin. Dramatic Sketches, Ballads & Lyrics. Fisher Unwin, L. 1892, green paper boards, parchment spine, t.e.g., uncut, some pages unopened. The second issue, one of fewer than 100 copies bound from remaining sheets of the first (Kegan Paul) issue, with cancel title page and added f.p. illus. by Edwin Ellis. Wade 3. See letter from Yeats to John O'Leary, late February 1892, where he says about 80 or 90 copies were so bound (Kelly ed. Coll. Letters v. 1 p. 287). Spine and boards a little soiled, catalogue number in ink at base of spine. This Copy Superbly Inscribed in Yeats' hand on front pastedown, 'To / My friend / Maud Gonne / W.B. Yeats / May 19 1892'; and with a correction probably in Yeats' hand to the 'By the same Author' list on reverse of t.p.A wonderful memento of a loving friendship, which dominated Yeats' early life and inspired much of his greatest poetry.Yeats first met Maud Gonne on 30 January 1889, a few weeks after publication of the first issue of this book, when she arrived at his father's home in Bedford Park (London) with an introduction from a mutual friend, the Fenian John O'Leary.Thereupon 'the troubling of my life began'. By 1892 she had already declined his first proposal of marriage, and they agreed to remain friends, and to co-operate on various projects both national and mystical. It was a friendship which unsettled Yeats' life for more than 20 years, but gave him a magnificent harvest in his poetry. Surviving items inscribed by Yeats to Maud Gonne are now of the greatest rarity. Gonne's unsettled life around this time was not conducive to preservation of mementos; during the Civil War her Dublin home was several times searched and its contents trashed by Free State forces. The book itself is very rare in this issue. We have not previously seen a copy in more than 30 years in business. COPAC records only two copies, at the British Library and Cambridge. There is also a copy at NLI.A superb, rare and most desirable item. (1)
