An Edwardian painted satinwood occasional table, the rounded rectangular top centred with a floral bouquet within a green scroll decorated border, raised on hexagonal baluster central column to tripartite base, raised on three brass paw feet, height 71cm, length 40.5cm, width 37cm.Provenance: The contents of a Cheshire Country House.Additional InformationThere are a few flecks of veneer which have been replaced over the years and a couple are missing - noticeably to the base and the column. A couple of old repairs here. The top has a split running through it and looking at the edge decoration, it is possible that this has been applied at a later date. There is also a split to the underside of the base, but this is not detracting from the item itself.

The design with the seagulls was created for the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Paris in 1938 and was part of a large dinner service also featuring seagulls. The Caravelle centrepiece had been designed in 1931 but the seagulls were added for the gift. The galleon is an emblem on the coat of arms of Paris. The Royal visit was intended to take place on 29 June but the Queen's mother died so it was postponed until July. Only two other examples are known to exist - a version held in the Musée Lalique Collection and one in the Royal Collection, UK.
