This version here is four minutes and two seconds and is simply Paul McCartney recording with piano and vocal percussion accompaniment - both by McCartney. The audio quality is excellent and it is an incredible listen from start to finish. See below for a Youtube video of the track. Provenance: the tape was given to Howie Casey, who played saxophone on the Ringo Starr album as a reference for the track in preparation for recording sessions. Howie's wife Sheila Casey would perform backing vocals on the track along with Linda McCartney. This item is sold as an artefact only, without copyright. Any reproduction is strictly prohibited.
CARSHALTON HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS - GENESIS TO JAZZ LP (ORIGINAL PRIVATE RELEASE - CHSG LP1). Massively intriguing self-released LP featuring the Carshalton High School For Girls with their (possibly late 60s/early 70s) LP Genesis To Jazz. With white labels showing no information, machine stamped matrix CHSG LP 1 A & 1 B. The record is in very clean Ex condition showing only a couple of very light, minor and faint surface hairline marks. The hand designed sleeve is in VG+ condition with some general foxing/ageing, though with strong integrity. 'Tasting notes' from someone who owned a copy: "A very interesting item that only comes up for sale very occasionally and is sought after, mainly for the first 4 tracks on Side one….the first song sounds like it could have come out of the Wicker Man soundtrack!... Weird chanting, bells, noises etc. Track three, in particular, is a beautiful, acoustic guitar-led song, with a voice reminiscent of a young Sandy Denny."Even after the first 4 tracks there are some nice pieces…a cool jazzy version of ‘Feeling Groovy’ in particular, and Side Two is largely comprised of a Musical about Daniel in the Lions Den with some nice psychedelic touches!"Please get in touch for audio samples.

1950 Vincent 499cc CometRegistration no. LKH 109Frame no. Upper Frame no.RC/1/5966 Rear Frame no. RC/1/5966 Engine no. Engine no. F5AB/2A/4066 Crankcase nos.93H/93H• Matching numbers example• Well maintained, with some modern updatesWith the apocryphal tale of Vincent-HRD Series A twins being conceived as a result of two single-cylinder drawings being overlapped, it could be said that the post-war single cylinder engine was brought about by the use of a rubber – removing the rear cylinder of the existing twin-pot design. In other respects, the layout was almost identical, with the same 'frameless' cycle parts being employed for both types. On the singles, the rear cylinder was replaced with a cast alloy beam, and the gearbox employed was the familiar Burman item, an older versions of which had been popular before the war. Announced in late 1948, a few Series B Meteors were produced before being joined by the Comet in Series C form with Girdraulic forks, as opposed to the Brampton girders on the Meteor. The Comet was a little more expensive, being equipped with the new forks, a higher compression ratio, front propstands, and a modified, slightly longer, rear frame section. In most other respects the bikes were very similar. It remained in the model range from its inception in 1948 until 1954.This matching numbers Comet was purchased by the vendor in 2004. The previous owner, Neil Cowan, had acquired the machine in 1994 from a garage in Dundee, and used the machine for a few rallies and shows before realising that it required some work. He gave the machine to Simon Linford who carried out work mainly to refurbish the front forks, dampers and electrics, whilst the engine was sent to Bob Dunn for a complete rebuild (invoice on file). Later work included fitting an Alton generator and regulator. Registered in Hull, the factory records do not relate to whom LKH 109 was first consigned (possibly Jordans of Hull), but there is a copy of the Works Order form and a VOC certificate of Authenticity in the documents. It retains its original upper frame, rear frame and engine. The present owner has used the Comet every year during his ownership, for club runs and local rallies, and continued to improve the machine, adding stainless steel wheel rims and spokes, a centre stand, folding rider's footrests, barrel relined with standard piston, new valves and guides, new multiplate clutch, new carburettor, anti-sumping valve, and a 105 camshaft (original cam included). Unfortunately, the vendor has reached an age at which he feels he may be unable to use the bike as much as he would like, and wishes to pass it on to another custodian to enjoy. With the battery reconnected, it will be ready for a new owner to use. Documentation comprises a current V5C, copy old V5s, a quantity of old tax discs, the aforementioned copy Works Order Form, invoices / receipts, and sundry papers.Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Property of a deceased's estate 1942 Harley-Davidson 750cc WLC ProjectEngine no. 42WLC279 (plus 2794 and BW106711 - see text)•Wartime Canadian-built military model•Purchased at a Ministry of Supply auction in 1947 and dismantled•Loosely assembled•Offered for restorationIntroduced in 1929 as a competitor to Indian's successful 750cc 'flat head' (sidevalve) v-twin, the Harley-Davidson Model D - better known as the '45' (its capacity in cubic inches) - really took off when the USA's entry into WW2 created an unprecedented demand for military motorcycles. Around 90,000 of the WL (military) version had rolled off the Milwaukee production lines before hostilities ceased, and the Harley '45' saw action in just about every theatre of war. De-mobbed Harleys helped meet the upsurge in demand for motorcycles in the immediate post-war years, doing much to establish the marque's reputation worldwide. This Canadian-built WLC Military Model served with the Canadian National Defence Force and was used on an air base in Oxfordshire, taking aircrew and engineers around the base, hence the very low recorded mileage of 486. On 18th July 1947 the Harley was purchased at an auction in Reading held by Simmons & Sons (who were acting for the Ministry of Supply) by RAF Flight Sergeant Martin Stevens, an aircraft mechanical engineer and motorcycle enthusiast. The purchase price was £57 10s. Flight Sergeant Stevens rode the machine straight back to his home in Buckinghamshire where he and his friend dismantled it so that they could re-spray it in non-military colours. However, they never got round to this and the bike remained in pieces in the barn (see photograph on file). Martin's family were aware of the Harley but it almost became mythical, with no one actually seeing it until after Martin's death almost 70 years later. The bike was left to his nephew, Raymond Biggs, who shared Martin's passion for motorcycles. Raymond had hoped to rebuild the bike himself but sadly it would be a project that was never completed. The machine is currently loosely bolted together and comes with its original rack, which in itself is an extremely rare item. Accompanying documentation includes the original bills of sale from Simmons & Sons Auctioneers and the Ministry of Supply, all dated 18th July 1947. Additionally, the bike comes with an original running and adjusting instruction manual. The vendor advises us that they have spoken to a well-known classic military vehicle enthusiast (who owns several of these machines) who confirms that it was normal practice to have an engine re-stamp. However, there is no documentary evidence to support this. Accordingly, prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with regard to this motorcycle's authenticity, originality, completeness and condition prior to bidding (close inspection advised).Offered without keyFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to biddingFor further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The oni applying burning pellets to his leg in the self-application of moxibustion, a particularly painful form of acupuncture-related homeopathic treatment – his marvelous expression indicates just how painful it can be. A RARE MARINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A TANUKI IN MID-TRANSFORMATIONUnsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)The mischievous tanuki in half-human, half-animal form, wearing a priest's robe while one half of his body is still covered with lotus leaves, holding one in front of his body in an unsuccessful attempt to obscure his gigantic scrotum, the face with a grotesque expression, one eye inlaid with dark horn, the back with two generously excavated himotoshi.HEIGHT 6.5 cmCondition: Very good condition with some wear due to extensive handling over a long period of time, few minuscule nicks, and expected age cracks. Fine, smooth, honey-yellow patina.Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm Collection, Paris. This netsuke shows the ability of the tanuki to transform into human shape. Here he is depicted in mid-transformation, combining human and animal elements. The tanuki (often mistakenly referred to as raccoon-dog or as a badger) has perhaps received the most attention in legend and in depictions in Japanese art. He is usually regarded as mischievous and is frequently associated with the fox, for both characters perform similar kinds of magical tricks, and both have the ability to transform themselves into human form to deceive or annoy people.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related but later unsigned netsuke of a tanuki priest, depicted in largely the same manner as the present lot, dated mid-19th century, in the Museum Kunstpalast, Duesseldorf, object number mkp.P 2005-232.This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. The walrus tusk with typical inclusions and bearing a fine, lustrous patina. RANICHI: AN IVORY NETSUKE OF TWO HORSES EMERGING FROM CHOKARO SENNIN'S GOURD By Ranichi, signed Ranichi 蘭一Japan, Kyoto, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Well carved as two horses atop a double-gourd, one of the horse's long tail still partly inside the vessel, both animals with eyes inlaid in translucent horn, their manes neatly incised, the underside with large himotoshi and signature RANICHI.LENGTH 3.7 cmCondition: Very good condition with some wear and few minor age cracks. Provenance: French private collection. The horse is the familiar of Chokaro Sennin, who is able to conjure the animal out of a gourd at will. The Japanese expression hyotan kara koma (lit. 'a horse in the gourd'), refers to a completely unexpected event that actually comes to pass, akin to the flight of pigs in the English-speaking world. This netsuke presents an even unlikelier occurrence, namely two horses emerging from the gourd. Trade Certificate: In accordance with new EU regulations that went into effect in January 2022, we have applied for a certificate to sell this item within the EU. We expect the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology to issue the certificate in 4-8 weeks. AN IVORY NETSUKE OF A MONKEY AND GIANT NAMAZU (EARTHQUAKE FISH)Unsigned Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Boldly carved as a reclining monkey with crossed legs leaning against a giant namazu – in this case not a common catfish but the legendary earthquake fish – and using his double-gourd (hyotan) as a pillow. The namazu and monkey both with subtle incision work heightened with sumi. The underside well carved with both animals' bodies and two asymmetrical himotoshi.LENGTH 4.3 cmCondition: Very good condition, appealingly worn, expected age cracks, traces of use, a minor nick to the tailfin. Fine and smooth honey-yellow patina.Provenance: Old Viennese private collection, acquired from Galerie Asboth, Vienna, on 27 May 1993.Legend has it that certain types of catfish (namazu) are responsible for the earthquakes that plague the islands of Japan. When aroused, these creatures would contort their bodies in such a way that gigantic tremors shook the area for miles and miles. The Shinto deity Kadori Myojin usually attempts to prevent such catastrophe with the help of his magic gourd, but this netsuke shows him as an ape having clearly given up on this valiant yet pointless endeavor.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related netsuke, illustrated in Eskenazi (1993) Japanese Netsuke from the Carre Collection, pp. 140-141, no. 171, and another in the collection of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, accession number 1986.30.52.Auction comparison: Compare a closely related netsuke, also dated 18th century, at Bonhams, Netsuke from a European Private Collection, 8 May 2016, London, lot 34 (sold for 1,875 GBP). The members of the Rokkasen are Otomo no Kuronushi, Ono no Komachi, Ariwara no Narihira, Kisen Hoshi, Sojo Henjo, and Fun'ya no Yasuhide. There are a considerable number of lacquer inro and some manju netsuke that bear this signature.
