A mid 20th century or earlier, Kenyan Mau Mau machete knife. Single edge steel blade with squared off end section. Leather covered handle with further painted leather strip grips applied around the circumference. Accompanied by a broad leather sheath of painted leather, with further leather tassel decoration. Notes: information supplied by the vendor states that the item was brought back from Kenya by the District Commissioner of Kenya in 1958. Approximately 55cm length when in scabbard - blade length 37.5cm. Condition: generally good. Some dark spots to the blade and evidence of sharpening. Some wear to the painted leather surface from service wear, plus minor wear to the chape area of the sheath. Good overall patina to the leather and blade.
Single Barrel shotgun with octagonal barrel by F. Rhodes of Scarborough, barrel marked 297/230, barrel has also been plugged/blocked, working action that holds on full cock (no half), mahogany stock. Barrel length 66cm, overall length 106cm. In date shotgun license needed to purchase this item.
WW2 era German dress bayonet with associated scabbard. Nickel plated pommel, cross guard and blade, the latter single edged and with fuller to both sides. Original leather washer at ricasso. Black painted scabbard with frog stud. The item appears to be lacking any makers mark. Approximately 40.5cm length when in scabbard. Condition: very good. Some dulling to the nickel finish on the pommel and cross guard. The blade is clean and bright with only minor wear. The scabbard is very good, with very little paint loss.
A Hitler Youth style scout knife, with associated scabbard. The knife closely matches the earlier Hitler Youth knife seen up until the end of WW2, the one difference being the HJ diamond set into the grip being replaced with the traditional scout motif of the fleur-de-lis. Nickel plated pommel and cross guard and chequered plastic grips. Steel blade marked C.JUL.HERBBERTZ SOLINGEN at the ricasso. Black painted magnetic steel scabbard leather belt loop and retaining strap. Notes: it’s possible that the knife is made up from parts dating from the WW2 era, and the manufacturer of the item was known to have produced HJ knives. The non lipped scabbard is consistent with pre-1945 style scabbards. Overstocks of knives often had their HJ diamond badges popped out and replaced by scout badges. Approximately 25.2cm length when in scabbard. Condition: generally very good. Wear to the nickel surface in the usual area on the pommel (under the leather retaining strap). Some wear / dulling to the nickel plating in other areas. Scabbard is very good condition, with matt paint finish (possibly factory repainted). Blade, grips and leather strap are good and show only light wear.
A 19th century, or possibly earlier Chinese Pudao or ‘horse cutter’ broadsword. Stained wooden shaft with iron ring finial, set upon a brass pommel. 2 brass collars set one third and two thirds along the shaft. The shaft is also set with brass flower motifs to both sides. A further brass socket with cast brass cross guard, leading to a pierced brass ricasso. Steel blade with slight upturned tip. No apparent marks to the item. Approximately 77 inches / 196cm total length. Blade length 78cm - shaft length 118cm. Condition: generally good. Some age related and service wear. Some knock and indentations to the brass parts. Light wear to the darkened finish of the wooden shaft. There are some shrinkage cracks to the wood on the shaft, but it remains solid. The blade is darkened with age and has an all over lightly pitted finish. Notes: given the nature of the item and its size, pick up of the item is strongly recommended.
A late 18th / early 19th century Indo-Persian Dhal shield. Convex lacquered animal hide form, with applied gilt bronze roundels. Velvet padded section to the inside, with 4 iron rings for holding straps. What remains of a old hand written label is also pasted to the inside. There is also a small hole near to lip of the Dhal, but it’s uncertain whether this was put there for hanging the item, or for the attachment of a strap. Approximately 57.5cm diameter. Condition: good overall shape and form, with age related wear. The lacquered finish has an overall crackled appearance, with some flaking and losses. One of the gilt bronze roundels has some loss of metal to the edge, and all 4 will move slightly on the shield. More cracking to the lacquered surface on the reverse side, plus a 2 inch chunk of surface lacquer missing to the underside. The velvet pad is complete, but there is split to the surface fabric.
An astonishing and almost certainly unique minuscule folding pocket knife, reputed to be the smaller knife of its type in the world. Likely Sheffield made in the early to mid 19th century, the pocket knife is an incredible piece of skilled workmanship. Mimicking the regular sized pocket and fruit knives of the 19th century, the item has a Mother of Pearl handle, secured by 3 tiny pin rivets. The blade is steel, with what appears to be a silver ricasso where the blade meets the handle. The tiny blade has the usual nail groove cut into it to facilitate opening. At one end the knife has a suspension for attaching to a fob or keyring, which absolutely dwarfs the knife itself. With the blade closed the knife measures 9.5cm including the suspension loop, without the suspension loop it is 7mm. With the blade open the knife measures 14.5mm including the suspension loop, and 12mm without the loop. Notes: the knife has been in the current owners collection since 1958. There were some enquiries made with the Guinness Book of Records some years ago, but for whatever reason it wasn’t assessed by them. It is apparently smaller than the example currently holding the record. The knife is pictured next to a 20 pence piece for scale. Condition: very good. The steel blade has darkened over time, but works exactly as it should. The mother of pearl handle is also in good condition and is without damage.
