Small archive of letters and documents relating to the Third Anglo-Maratha War, Jabalpur ('Jubbulpore') and environs, 1818-19, comprising: 1) Series of 22 autograph letters signed from O'Brien to Charles Joseph Doyle (1787-1848), military secretary to Francis Rawdon-Hastings, governor-general of India, dated 14 March 1818 to 17 February 1819, many written from the field, and concerning the pursuit of the Peshwa (Baji Rao II) and other Maratha commanders including Appa Sahib, military engagements including the reduction of Mundillah, troop movements, strength and arms, tactical and strategic information and speculation, and other subjects including the welfare O'Brien's sons and his opinion on local horses (the 'Marrata Mare'), the final letter (17 February 1819) in fact post-dating the Maratha defeat and concerning the 'subjugation of the ... Rajahs of Hurry, and Purtabghur' , most of the letters single bifolia, 4to 2) Manuscript report signed by O'Brien on the newly-acquired 'provinces ... south of the Nurbuddah [i.e. Narmada River]', addressed to C. A. Molony as commissioner of ceded provinces on the Nurbuddah, dated 30 June 1818, 11 leaves, foolscap (32 x 20.4 cm), 3) Series of 10 copy letters and similar documents, many from originals by Richard Jenkins (1785-1853), British resident at Nagpur, apparently made to be forwarded to Doyle, one signed by one A. Hervey, all others signed by O'Brien, 4to and foolscap, and 1 other item (Qty: 34)NOTES‘O’Brien entered the East India Company services as a cadet in 1794, joining the Bengal Light Cavalry a year later. In 1811 he was chosen to command a regiment of light cavalry as part of the invasion force of Java, where he built a substantial reputation as a soldier. Early in 1818, after being redeployed to India … O’Brien was appointed to run the administration of the newly acquired territory of Nagpur, central India, and was shortly thereafter earmarked by Lord Hastings for a senior position in the Residency in the Indian state of Hyderabad. By 1822, he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel’ (Webster, The Richest East India Merchant: The Life and Business of John Palmer of Calcutta, p. 77).
* Malcolm (Sir John, 1769-1833). [Manuscript report signed on the siege of Asirgarh], [1819], secretarial manuscript, 28 leaves, signed by Malcolm 'John Malcolm' on folio 27 recto, folios 10 and 28 blank, watermarks dated 1816 and 1817, partial foliation, frequent catch-words, sometime stitched, now disbound, creased from folding, a few leaves remaining in bifolia, but most now separated along central fold, folio 6 partially split along one fold, some short splits and closed tears elsewhere, pencil annotation to folio 18 verso ('1819 Madras, Papers respecting late Campaign & List of the Native Powers, To be enquired if they have re[ceive]d from [?]Br.Genl Sir J. Malcolm'), foolscap (32.4 x 20 cm), together with: ibid., 'Memorandum of the proceedings of Brigadier General Sir John Malcolm from the 16th of January to the 20th of June 1818 including those connected with the submission of the Peishaw Badjerow', 1818, secretarial manuscript, 11 numbered bifolia (i.e. 22 leaves), watermarked 1815, sometime stitched, now disbound, creased from folding, bifolia 10 and 11 separated, a few other short splits and tears, manuscript docket to final folio verso ('Bengal, R. 24th August 1818, Memoir of the Proceedings [...]'), foolscap (32.4 x 20 cm), Munro (John, 1778-1858), [Group of copy letters and documents relating to Munro's court martial], [Madras, 1809], secretarial manuscript on paper, 40 leaves (of which a few blank), containing copies of 13 letters and documents in various hands, watermarked 1806, contemporary boards, rebacked, foolscap (32 x 20 cm) (Qty: 3)NOTESProvenance (first item): Acquired from Michael Hicks Beach, London, between 1990 and 1995 (with manuscript catalogue note on headed paper). The fall of Asirgarh fortress in 1819 after the Third Anglo-Maratha War marked the end of organised military resistance to Company rule in central India. Malcolm's report on the siege was printed in The Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register (1820), volume 9, pp., 59-66, but this manuscript copy contains at least two passages apparently omitted from the published version: folio 20 recto line 5 ('During last night a Mewattee who') to folio 21 recto line 5 from bottom ('Doveton's operations'); and folio 22 line 3 from bottom ('The Killadar ...') to the end of folio 22 verso. The second item ('Memorandum') was printed as appendix V in Malcolm's Political History of India (1826). Munro was quartermaster-general of the Madras army when he was controversially arrested (but never charged) at the request of officers offended by the wording of his report advocating the retention of the so-called 'Tent Contract' (see Tuck, ed., The East India Company, 1784-1834 , p. 170).

Original vintage movie poster for the Belgian release of the American Film The Enforcer (Belgian title: De Laatste Getuige; French title: Le Dernier Temoin), directed by Bretaigne Windust and starring Humphrey Bogart, Zero Mostel and Ted de Corsia. Great design showing the figure of Humphrey Borgart starring right at the viewer with his left hand held forward and a gun in his right hand. Below him, a fighting scene between four men is depicted while a young blond woman in a yellow dress is leaning on a sofa on the right side of the image. This film was originally entitled "Murder, Inc." and was based on the business of organized crime hiring out for contract killings. The Humphrey Bogart film was timed with Senator Kefauver's hearings on organized crime Production: Director Bretaigne Windust, an accomplished Broadway director, fell seriously ill during the beginning of shooting, so Raoul Walsh was brought in to finish the film. Walsh refused to take the credit, calling it Windust's work. This was Bogart's last film for Warner Bros., the studio that had made him a star. Warner only distributed the film. It was produced by United States Pictures, and is now owned by Republic Pictures, a division of Paramount Pictures.. Poor condition, folded as issued, cracks, pinholes in corners, creases in margins, this item has been laminated. Country: Belgium, year of printing: 1951, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 47x35.5
