Please note, the chest should not be strictly described as oyster veneered. The top incorporates fruitwood. Some elements of timber to the drawer fronts may be later and appear to be mahogany or a related timber. The drawer fronts also incorporate some walnut.Condition Report: Please note, the chest should not be strictly described as oyster veneered. The top incorporates fruitwood. Some elements of timber to the drawer fronts may be later and appear to be mahogany or a related timber. The drawer fronts also incorporate some walnut.Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits and some minor old repairs. some small losses. Some old repairs including a rectangular section of timber to the top of the chest and some other areas (see additional images) including shallow strips of spliced in venner to the rear uprights (see images) The lock escutcheons may be replacements faithful to period style, the handles of the drawers are replacements faithful to the period style but appear to use the same holes as the originals. The pendant element of one handle is detached and the link element broken so requires repair or replacement. The two locks present are later 18th century replacements and vary from eachother. The remaining lock apertures have been filled with timber fillets. Lacking keys. There is glued down paper to all sides of the interiors of the drawer linings. The drawer linings are constructed from a mixture of walnut, yew and pine. The pine elements are generally forming the floor and the rear boards of the drawer linings are very crudely cut and are likely later replacement elements. There are later pine drawer runners and supporting blocks to the interior of the carcass. The floor of the chest and the rear panels are original. Some fading overall. The front feet are possibly original or very old replacements. They are ebonised. The ebonising may possibly be later. There are worm holes and some fragmentary loss due to worm to the feet. The rear feet are stile feet and the timber forming them is integral to the construction of the chest. Evidence of old worm damage (holes) in other areas as expected for age (see additional images) . The worm does not appear to be present now or live. The purchaser may wish to have the item treated in order to be certain and re-assured that no worm is present.
