After her education she secured a position of shop assistant with Mr Charles Knight the Ryde photographer. After a few years she became Mr Knights assistant and was responsible for booking and arranging the various plates and cameras ready for Mr Knight to set the setters and camera. My mother related many stories in later years about her work, but the most interesting were those of the Royal Family when at Osborne House. Mr Knight was the Royal photographer when Queen Victoria and her family were at Osborne. My mother became quite well known to the Royals and staff at Osborne House. After one gathering my mother was presented with this striking clock by Prince Arthur for being so patient with the two-hour sitting. He said there were so many clocks in Albert Cottage he was giving them away to friends and servants for services given to the Royal Family. In 1910 my mother left the island to live at Brierley Hall..When my mother passes away she asked that the clock be given to Mr Thomas Parkes of Halesowen a fellow Brother whom she had studied the Scriptures with. I wrote this for Mr Parkes who was most gracious and humble to receive this treasured item.John Orchard, 18th March 1943
