A George III silver dessert standPaul Storr, London 1809, rim stamped 'RUNDELL BRIDGE ET RUNDELL AURIFICES REGIS ET PRINCIPIS WALLIAE LONDINI', incuse stamped 355, the swags with addition marks for Richard Sibley, and with lion passant, one with date letter for 1843Circular form, the whole on an incurved triangular base with chamfered corners, to the top a detachable concave circular basket with open basket-weave and a pierced grapevine border, resting within a circular holder featuring an embossed classical frieze, the central supporting column beneath created by three classical maidens, the figures standing outwards and sculptured in the round, their downward stretched arms forming a criss-cross pattern with the thyrsi which are crossed and tied near the top with bows of ribbon, the base centred by a round floral boss, the whole resting on three cast mask feet, each corner featuring an open-mouthed bearded man with ram's horns, all connected by foliage and flower cast swags, atop three ball feet, height total 30cm, diameter basket 26cm, weight 101oz.Footnotes:Stands to elevate foods were particularly popular in the early 19th century. Lavish spending on table silver at the time led to more elaborate layouts for each course, including dessert. Stands were used in the second course to display sweet jellies, and in the dessert course they supported pyramids of fresh and preserved fruit. From about 1810, this design of dessert stand was one of the most popular models sold by the Royal Goldsmiths, 'Rundell, Bridge and Rundell'. It is typically eclectic in style, drawing on classical elements but creating an object that would appeal to early 19th century taste. Sources such as Thomas Hope's 'Household Furniture and Decoration' of 1807 may have provided the inspiration for the basket. However the interpretation for the caryatid figures, ultimately derived from the Erechtheum on the Athenian Acropolis, may owe more to contemporary models in Percier and Fontaine's 'Recueil de Decorations Interieures' of 1801. Two Paul Storr silver-gilt versions of this dessert stand can be seen at The Wellington Museum, at Apsley House in London. They were purchased by the first Duke of Wellington as part of an Ambassadorial service. In addition, a silver version is currently on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum (Silver, Room 67, The Whiteley Galleries) and a silver-gilt version is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.LiteratureN. A large Swiss silver and parcel-gilt standing cup Marquard Zehender I, Bern 1651 Baroque goblet form, with a tapering hexagonal upper bowl, an engraved coat-of-arms for 'Bern' to one panel and a family crest to the adjoining, interspersed by embossed fruits, leading to a waisted baluster teardrop-lobed lower bowl, each panel between embossed with flowers and foliage, such as iris and dwarf carnation, high polished gilt against a matt ground, an ornamental silver calyx with tendrils mounted to the bowl base, a pierced stem beneath resembling angels wings with a trio of cast gilt angels heads inserted around the knop, a silver calyx repeated beneath, transitioning into a waisted lobed pedestal base on a domed circular foot, height 32cm, weight 17oz. Footnotes: Property of a Private Collector The maker's marks can be located in Rosenburg, 'Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen - IV Band', (Berlin: Frankfurter Verlags-Ansalt, 1928), p.524, item 8834. This appears to be an important piece, the ownership of which may have considerable historical relevance. These are the arms of the CHAMBRIER family of Neuchâtel Switzerland. The family were prominent in the same provincial area from at least the beginning of the 17th century, and notably Pierre de CHAMBRIER (1604-1668) who had married Esther PURY, is likely to have commissioned this item. His son and heir was Josué de CHAMBRIER (1639-1700) who married Judith TRIBOLET (1640-1701) and his subsequent son and heir was Pierre CHAMBRIER (1659-1744), who married Marguerite de MONTMOLIN (1662-1735). At the base of the armorial the initials 'JC' are engraved in European script. This appears to relate to Josué de CHAMBRIER (1639-1700). Clearly in 1651, the date of the item, Josué would have been only 11 or 12 years old so it is unlikely that he personally commissioned this piece, but it was awarded to him. It is possible that the item was commissioned by his parents as a gift for him. Of considerable note is a later descendant Jean Pierre CHAMBRIER (1753-1822) of Neuchâtel, son of Charles Louis CHAMBRIER and Madeleine BRUN only daughter of John Pierre BRUN d'Oleyres. He inherited his maternal grandfather's title as Baron d'Oleyres and established Neuchâtel as a Barony. Later, acting on behalf of King Frederick II of Prussia, he was also responsible for the restoration of Neuchâtel after the Napoleonic invasion. They were married 22 March 1753. Notably at the time of the engraving James BRYDGES was the Marquis of Carnarvon and the assay date of 1752 suggests that the item was most likely to be a marriage piece. They set up a London home at 39 Upper Grosvenor Street and later at Chandos House, 2 Queen Anne Street Marylebone. James BRYDGES was the only son of Henry BRYDGES (1708-1771), 2nd Duke of Chandos, and Lady Mary BRUCE (1710-1738), daughter of Charles BRUCE (1682-1747), 3rd Earl of Ailesbury. From 1744 James BRYDGES assumed the courtesy title Marquess of Carnarvon and on the death of his father in 1771 he succeeded him as 3rd Duke of Chandos. He was MP for Winchester (1754-1761) and Radnorshire (1761-1768) as well as Gentleman of the Bedchamber to George, Prince of Wales from (1760-1764). In 1777 James BRYDGES, then 3rd Duke of Chandos, married secondly Anne Eliza GAMMON (1737-1813) daughter of Sir Richard GAMMON (1714-1787) 1st Baronet of Datchworth Bury. A GEORGE III SILVER SHAPED CIRCULAR SALVERJ. E. TERRY & CO., LONDON 1817With a raised gadrooned and foliate border, chased with floral sprays and C-scrolls, engraved with an armorial and on three shell and scroll bracket feet31cm (12 1/4in) diameter1272g (40.9 oz) These are the arms of the BERTIE family Condition Report: Marks are clearStands well, does not wobbleEngraving crisp, no signs of erased engravingCentre is firmDecoration good and contemporary to the piece4cm (1 1/2in) highLight scratches and wear commensurate with age and useThese are the arms of the BERTIE family, Earls of Abingdon. On this occasion the usual indicators that would tell us the owner of the arms are earls are not present (supporters and coronets). Similarly there are no marks cadency indicated in the arms (indicating sons of a noble family). It is suspected as a result this is an item of the household of the BERTIE family, who where of Westbury, Wiltshire. The family were at this time heavily in debt and were selling off their estate at Westbury in order to remain solvent. The holder of the arms at the time of assay (1817) was Montagu BERTIE (1784-1854) 5th Earl of Abingdon, who was the third son of Willoughby BERTIE (1740-1799) 4th Earl of Abingdon by Charlotte WARREN (1744-1794). He married: Firstly in 1807 Emily GAGE (1776-1836) daughter of Thomas GAGE by Margaret KEMBLE. Secondly in 1841 Lady Fredrica Augusta KERR (186-1864). The 5th Earl had only one surviving male sibling in 1817 and this was Hon. Revd. Frederic BERTIE (1793-1868), clearly he was also a candidate for ownership Condition Report Disclaimer

Earliest records show them to be of Essex, where notable members of the family were Barons Bourchier and Earls of Ewe and Essex, both titles becoming extinct by the early 17th century. Later family members settled in Kent and it is likely to be that family who are owners of the item at the time of assay. A number of strands of this family exist and the ownership would lie with a wife or daughter, as indicated by the lack of crest and the shape of shield. It is possible that the pendant was part of a larger item, there are a couple of patches of yellow solder and some marks where another fitting may have subtly been removed. All diamonds present and correct. The bale hinges open so it could be put onto a strand of pearls of an item with a broader suspension. The setting is unmarked but is in our opinion platinum. The chain is modern, the clasp loop has been slightly crushed and so it is slightly tight on the ring bolt loop. Condition Report Disclaimer
